The film’s best bits are its little throwaway moments and there are plenty of those. “Lootcase” is not perfect or extraordinary in any way. But it will bring a smile to your face. And in these times I think it’s fair to say we’re grateful for what we can get.

On the whole, Lootcase is a nice entertainer but it is more like a television serial than a film. Its dialogues, drama and performances are its high-points and make it good for home-viewing. Lack of awareness due to poor promotion will cost its business dear.

We’ve seen Raaz in this avatar before, though he’s usually scruffy and ruffianly. Here he’s a better class of hood, and some of the parallels he draws with the animals he likes to watch, are quite funny. Shorey, as always, is watchable. But less than halfway through, the plot loses steam, and we begin losing interest. The two who kept me with the film were Gajraj Rao, who employs a nice measure of smiley menace, and Rasika Dugal, as Lata, the wife of Nandan, who brings sexy to ordinariness. It is my belief that Dugal could be draped in a sack, and she would still manage to sparkle. That’s what this film needed much more of; what we get, instead, is blandness.

Lootcase, as must be obvious by now to anybody who has come this far into the review, is a film that doesn’t fully deserve the assemblage of fine actors that it has at its disposal. But for simply getting Vijay Raaz and Gajraj Rao into the same frame, it deserves one star more – half each for the two actors – than it otherwise would have.

‘Lootcase’ is an earnest effort with regards to two things: bring to light the travesty of greed, and life in general. But, with the writers, Kapil Sawant and Rajesh Krishnan, falling prey to the need to take the safe route and inculcate the tried-and-tested formulas of this genre, honestly, the film didn’t have much promise beyond a point. The ‘loot’ wasn’t bad; it’s just the execution that didn’t work out too well for the gang.

You might not be laughing hard while watching the film, but you will find yourself smiling throughout. Yes, the script had room for improvement and there were a few scenes where humour could have been induced, but all that can be overlooked because of the fantastic performances of the actors.

The humour in Lootcase soon becomes sparse, the occasional wisecrack/misunderstanding can be seen coming from a mile and the pace slackens. The narrative’s lack of urgency is its undoing. Not that Lootcase is terrible – not at all. It is half done, but it is also well begun. It is predicable, but it is also harmless. If you are in an undemanding mood, then it is not a bad film to spend your time on.

It is Rajesh Krishnan’s debut movie in Bollywood. His past work includes directing ads, and that has come in handy for him. He knew what to tell, how much to show and avoid going too far. During the pandemic, we all want to have a good laughter. Well, Lootcase provides you with that. It’s refreshing to see black comedy as we see in series like Fargo is shown, with no objections. So don’t think twice and keep your snacks ready to enjoy and root for this loot-chase!Four Stars!
