Truth be told, I never made it past episode two of season one of Four More Shots Please. I loved the idea of a Sex and the City-style series about four fabulous, flawed women in Mumbai. But the narrative was too simplistic and on-the-nose. So it’s good to discover that Season 2 has a little more nuance and depth. Somewhere around the 7th or 8th episode, it struck me that Four More Shots Please is basically the streaming equivalent of Cosmopolitan magazine – there’s sex, pretty people, fashion, travel and a few big-ticket topics – body shaming, same-sex love, family acceptance etc. etc. Some scenes make an impact – like Damini weeping uncontrollably after a break-up or Anjana pushing back against the boys’ club at her law firm – but the series isn’t designed to land hard punches. This is feminism-lite.

After completing 10 episodes of the show, my first reaction was ‘so so so much better than season one’. Yes, absolutely! In the first season, everything was cluttered and like the girls, even I was confused with their actions and reactions. But this time, Damini, Anjana, Umang and Siddhi have matured and even dealt with the situations thrown on them similarly.

There’s no denying that the second season comes with flaws and shortcomings. It becomes creepy at times, occasionally icky, and often repetitive. But the lives of the four fully fleshed-out women have empowered us enough to rise above imperfections. At the end, it does not feel like a compromise. The investment feels earned, and we come out more empathetic, less judgmental.

Four More Shots Please! S2, shot through with wit and warmth, swings between the fizzy and the fulsome, the tantalising and the tender, with striking poise. The show sets a scorching pace, pausing for breath once in a while to zoom in on both the angular and the granular of the highs and lows of the lives of Damini, Anjali, Umang and Siddhi.

The eagerly-awaited Four More Shots Please 2, which went live on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, is a delightful attempt at storytelling that hits the right notes. The web series revolves around what happens when four good friends reunite under unexpec…circumstances and revive their friendship. The basic plot has enough ‘masala’ to keep the viewer hooked and this proves to be the show’s first win. The impact of the story is enhanced by some deft writing that focuses on ‘showing’ as opposed to ‘tell

Won’t deny that there were scenes that left me in splits, and others that made me miss my gal pal, but I’d still root for Season 1. Watch it not because you know we women have issues, but because we’re all in this together. Well, I’m just ending it as sad as the finale (Oops!)
