ShoojitSircar gets it right yet again… Effective writing – garnished with wicked humour – is its USP… Unforeseeable finale a big plus… #BigB, #Ayushmann in super form… Worth watching! #GulaboSitaboReviewr

The film also comes with the subtle but admirable message of communal harmony, and the not-so-subtle but equally important evidence of just how the poor are frequently exploited. Gulabo Sitabo is most enjoyable when Bachchan eats up the scenery lobbing insults as Mirza. He is the best thing in a sadly disappointing film. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

Gulabo Sitabo is likely to be an acquired taste. As I watched, I wondered how this old-world film would have played in a theater. What would the warm blues and oranges of the haveli look like on a big screen? Would Shantanu Moitra’s nostalgic score enrich the visuals more? I also worried that since streaming platforms don’t encourage commitment – if you get restless with one story, you just click on the next – how many people will see this film through? We’ll never know. But Gulabo Sitabo leaves you with a smile and an ache. And that’s a rare combination.

On the whole, Gulabo Sitabo is a film with limited appeal. It will be liked by the elite but not as much by the masses. Its viewership on Amazon Prime will, of course, be huge because it’s the first big star-cast film to be premiered on an OTT platform due to the lockdown closure of cinemas.

I missed the zest, the drollness and sharpness, that Chaturvedi’s writing is so full of. The names of the characters in the movie (the property agent is called ‘Munmun ji’, haha), the description of characters (one is called ‘tatpoonjiya’), the movie’s name itself, based on two popular folksy puppets, is more fun than the movie itself: both the tale and the telling are middling.

Gulabo Sitabo has parts that are a bit of a mixed bag, but the manner in which the film rides on its quirky principal premise, droll little idiosyncratic detours, the cadences of the language of Lucknow and two wonderful pivotal star turns gives it an out-of-the-ordinary veneer.

Shoojit Sircar’s ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ cherry-picks one of the seven deadly sins, greed, as its central theme and tells an appealing tale through two quarrelsome but headstrong characters. The message is short and simple: that it’s okay to desire a lot in life but extreme greed often doesn’t land you in the right place — whether it’s a person’s heart, house or mahal.

Gulabo Sitabo’s morbid moral, hammered through in the climax, reflects on how youth and material possessions are both equally evanescent. So value those around you before you keel over and conk off.

All said and done, Shoojit Sircar and Juhi Chaturvedi will capture you in the haveli for 120 minutes and make you watch the drama unfold. ‘Drama’ being the keyword here! Watch it for some mind-blowing performances & the rustic mood created by Sircar.Three stars!

Having said that, the narration is smooth, if not flawless. The fine artistic details of the old haveli have been captured beautifully by Avik Mukhopadhyay. The movie begins and ends with an almost similar scene, which I liked. Gulabo Sitabo is sweet and simple, just like its director Shoojit Sircar.
