Keeps you hooked in first half, despite thin plot… Action is its USP and Vidyut excels in it… Gulshan Devaiah is devious, truly fantastic… Predictable twists [second hour] and tame climax are roadblocks.

Darius Yarmil and Junaid Wasi have penned a routine story but have made it quite interesting by making the story appear big, with three countries involved. Also, the track of Buraq’s family gives the story an interesting dimension. On the whole, Commando 3 is an engaging and entertaining fare and will, therefore, do fair business at the ticket windows.

The story, written by Darius Yarmil and Junaid Wasi, is attempting to speak to and cash in on the present political climate. Commando 3 is more ambitious than Commando 2 but that film set a pretty low bar. Director Aditya Datt tries to construct tension with a countdown, secret locations, friction between the Indian security services and the British forces but Commando 3 just plods along without any surprises. It doesn’t help that there are consistent doses of action to remind the viewers, one more time, of Vidyut’s amazing fighting abilities – the actor does his stunts himself. After a while though, all the kicking, pirouetting and slicing starts to look the same. My eyes glazed over and I wondered: Why doesn’t anyone bring guns to these fights – it would all be over sooner! Commando 3 is a celebration of hyper-masculinity and hyper-patriotism. That’s not a good combination – either in cinema or in life.

The first half of the story has ample action, but it takes time to gather momentum and draw you in. The second half offers some twists and turns; however, the story is so stretched by then, even the high-octane action doesn’t keep you as invested. The basic plotline of one brave commando saving the nation at all costs from a series of terror attacks, is trite, but that is not the bigger problem here. The narrative is far-fetched, defies logic and tries to pack in so much that it loses grip and pace at times. The background score attempts to elevate the drama, but is often overbearing. However, for action buffs, there is enough and more in ‘Commando 3’.

Like the earlier films, Commando 1 and 2, this one’s USP is action: car and bike chases, people being blown to bits, and lots of space given over to Jammwal doing his thingThough Jamwal does the heroic things, like thumping thugs and rescuing fair maidens, it is Devaiah who steals the show in this patchily plotted, predictable actioner. He sports a spiffy haircut, a passable British accent, and a manic glint to dress up his ‘jehadi’ mastermind. Wish Jammwal had vamped it up, too. His punches land well, but he’s all straight arrow and flat for the most part: thanks be to the go-go-go action, which revs things up a bit.

Roadblocks are predictable enough, overcome just too easily by Dogra and there are no cliff-hanger moments so essential to actioners and thrillers. Director Aditya Datta is unable to plot and pace this film effectively and at over two hours, Commando 3 feels like an inordinate stretch. This one, certainly fails to pack a punch.

Commando 3’s plot is simple: A megalomaniac plans a terror attack in India to avenge the Babri mosque demolition in Ayodhya, and riots against Muslims so that he and his international businessmen-cum-jihadis can establish the Khalifa in the country. Director Datt makes a hash of this plot as our desi commando goes bang-bang and boom-boom, first in India and then in London.

On the whole, COMMANDO 3 is a decent action entertainer that works because of the action sequences, social message and some paisa-vasool scenes. It arrives sans any competition and hence, has chances to work in the mass centres.

All said and done, Commando 3 serves what it promises but only in the first half. Post interval, the movie takes a jingoistic route and falls flat with the development of the story. One can watch it for Vidyut’s action, but then we have already seen that in all of his films. Two stars!
