Joker is solid in both its craft and storytelling. But the film made me ponder what message it may be sending out – that violence is an accepted solution for these hopeless, cynical times..? I’m not sure that’s very responsible. But I’ll leave you to decide what you draw from it. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Joker.

To say that Joker is a disturbing film would be to give the word disturbing weight that it wasn’t designed for. Joker is frightening, haunting and so problematic that I had trouble speaking for hours after watching the film and lost some sleep. That sounds dramatic but it’s how I respond to films. And this character – one of pop culture’s greatest villains – has the power to do that. Joker is artful nihilism. And despite its dazzle, it’s hard for me to get behind that.

This film isn’t about the victims, though. It’s refreshing to see little to no moral policing about the strippers and why they need to do what they do. If there’s any judgement, it’s directed towards the men – the wolves of Wall Street, who, as Ramona reasons, deserved to have their money stolen. Director Lorene Scafaria approaches ‘Hustlers’ like a gender-reversed mobster heist, complete with elaborate montages. However, the narrative tends to get repetitive, to the point of being excessive. This affects the pacing and tonality, which aren’t as focused as they need to be. Despite the best efforts of Lopez, there’s a lot of glamour but not enough depth required to make this a memorable film, but maybe just enough for a night out.

The blend of realism and theatrics in Hustlers pulsates with life. It yields a witty and no-holds-barred examination of frailty and simplicity on one hand and strength and guile on the other. The film’s in-your-face physicality is leavened with generous dashes of humour.Hustlers is embellished with a lively, foot-tapping soundtrack that features the likes of Britney Spears, Rihanna, Janet Jackson, Sean Kingston, Fiona Apple and Usher (who puts in an appearance designed to bring the house down) alongside a bunch of Chopin etudes. The restless camera is always on the move, imparting to the film a staccato, montage-like feel that serves to enhance the energy inherent in Scafaria’s treatment of the narrative. Highly recommended.

The repetitive nature of showcasing the gang’s con also gets tiresome after a point, as the film constantly shifts, in unappealing edit patterns, from the strip club to Ramona’s plush apartment. It all ends on an unsatisfying, anti-climactic note. It does feel as if the film was too scared to take a truly deep dive into the real life case. We are left with little to no understanding of any of the women in the film, except for the formulaic and unemotional narrative of Dorothy being a single mother and an immigrant. While still an overall enjoyable movie, it is important to regard the biggest takeaway – that mere representation does not automatically mean great cinema.

All said and done, this movie is above and beyond any kind of reviews. Joaquin Phoenix levels up the bar set by Heath Ledger and the standard of touching the character of Joker is now at an all-time high. Recommended for that insane side of yours!
