The Iron lady Movie Review

It’s hard to find fault in Meryl Streep’s extraordinary performance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, but it’s a shame the film itself has little of interest to say about either the woman, or the period of British history she shaped. Streep nails the accent, and finds emotional depth in her portrayal of the polarizing leader, but the film never goes beyond a surface look at Thatcher’s controversial political career. I’m going with two out of five for The Iron Lady. It’s a lazy film about one of the most influential leaders of our times. An opportunity has been wasted.

a movie is much more than its actors. The story of a grocer’s daughter who tells her would-be husband, “I cannot die washing tea cups,” who conquers a men’s bastion, who gives the go-ahead to sink the Argentinian cruiser General Belgrano during the Falklands war, could easily have been a much more compelling and nuanced narrativeAs a movie, The Iron Lady would have been dumped in the category of less-than-satisfying biopics. But Streep and Helland have not only ensured that the movie engages the regular viewer; they have also made it must-watch in every acting workshop; hence an afterlife.

Despite its misspent potential and wishy-washy biopic fulfillment, The Iron Lady is still a very exciting proposition for no other reason except Meryl Streep. And not merely because it earned her a third Oscar. It is, without negotiation (a Thatcher touch), a well-deserved victory and a superlative performance that serves to inspire and emulate. The Iron Lady is much too lethargic to create the complexity of Thatcher’s supremacy or match the aura of Streep’s ambitions but it’s definitely worth a watch for all those who wished to witness a practical example of iron fist in a velvet glove.

It wasn’t just her free-market, rightist policies or her tough crackdown on trade unions that made her such a polarising figure in British politics. In this film, it was also the fact that these came from a woman, who openly challenged that the others didn’t have the guts to stand for principles the way she did. The Iron Lady — shouldered by a magnificently self-effacing and nuanced Streep, conveying a woman who at times sees everything and at others is gloriously blind — evokes that iron in that lady. It may be a bit rusted, a little bent, need some reinforcement, but there is no questioning that iron
