The success of any revenge-based masala movie is the effectiveness of its antagonist and it is here that Mersal feels a little underwhelming. Atlee seems to have wanted an antagonist who is suave and sinister, but perhaps because we have only recently seen a terrifically over-the-top SJ Suryah in Spyder, his characterisation of Daniel Arockiaraj here comes across as a rather subdued villain, even though the actor does well. When you have a mass hero in full form like Vijay is in the film, how can things go wrong?

The basic premise of two brothers unaware of each other’s identities and then taking on their parents’ killers wasa staple of several films in the ’70s and ’80s. . But what makes Mersal a watchable entertainer is his rich packaging and showcasing of Vijay’s hero avatar in a triple role. Atlee’s earlier film with Vijay — Theri — worked due to the heavy dose of drama and emotion, laced with action, that it offered viewers. Once again, there is an emotional chord in the flashback scenes involving the parents (Thalapathy and his wife). On the whole Mersal is an entertainer, which keeps you engrossed. Like the concept of “full meals”, it has something in it for viewers with varied tastes.

There’s no escaping a feeling of deja vu when you watch an Atlee film. But that feeling has never been as strong as when one watches Mersal. The director must really have been Shankar’s most diligent assistant. Ten minutes into Mersal and all you see is Shankar, not just in terms of treatment, even in the tropes and plot points. Even so, Mersal is a Shankar film the man himself can be proud of.For now, Atlee has extended his golden run into his third film. I guess he can afford to do so as long as there are older blockbusters he can remix. Even with the wine being so old, there’s still a lot of fun in admiring the bottle.

Mersal has a larger than life plot, triple role moments that you find only in films, and some superficial scenes; but when you see Vijay in the middle of all these, it is all the more easy for viewers to suspend disbelief and settle back for fun. Because when he is in action, you don’t think much about logic. Mersal has its moments, but if you remove Vijay’s charisma, the movie becomes very predictable.

As a director-writer, Atlee has shown a great growth from his previous film Theri. However, there are also many loose ends in the story and unexplained questions. For example, how come the only and the biggest hospital in the village was deserted on one fateful night? So much so that a bloody violent crime goes unnoticed. But, the director has ensured that there is never a dull moment on the big screen and that aspect of the film outweighs the logical follies in the narration. Mersal promised to be a good masala entertainer and it delivers on it.

The fight for land, the fight against corruption and capitalism has translated into a good popcorn entertainer that celebrates, Ilayathalapathy, now Thalapathy. The one thing that could have been avoided was the stretchy second half and the manner in which Samantha’s character’s arc is resolved. This does make one wonder if the director tried to pack a little too much in the film than was needed.
