The redeeming factor here is Dhanush, who is nothing if not charming. How he beats up goons who are thrice as big as him, is a mystery worthy of Sherlock’s time. Kajol plays Vasundhara with grit. The movie drops its aesthetic and gives you a surprisingly sweet conclusion. In spite of its issues, it may work for people seeking star-powered entertainers. But otherwise, it gets lost in translation.

Given that there is a female director at the helm, it has surprisingly regressive lines, poking fun at wives and other women. These jokes have gone old, and more so in a film helmed by the next gen. In the last few minutes, the film changes tack, loosens up, allowing the two leads to break out. Suddenly, we find the two talking to each other, measuring each other up for size, showing us two actors at work. This could have been the film.

What’s Bad: Everything apart from Dhanush.Loo Break: You’ll get bored of going to loo – time & again, explore other places at your cinema halls. Watch or Not?: Watch only if you can bear Dhanush’s heroism for over 2 hours.

Expletives or not, it’s always better to watch a film in the language it’s originally created. The sur of a conversation is lost in translation especially when the dubbing is as clunky and inconsistent as it is here.No wonder my favourite bit is when the film is at its quietest and quirkiest, when Dhanush and Kajol catch a breather and the script, at last, comes into its own.I would have liked to see more such free spirit in VIP 2. Pity, it had to be the final five minutes.

This enlightening and course-changing conversation, like the rest of VIP 2, is meant to be taken with a fistful of salt. But do brace yourself for another onslaught some time soon. The film drops enough hints in its closing moments that we aren’t done with Raghuvaran yet. Let’s hope that Kajol for one has had enough of this jarring battle of the sexes.

VIP 2: Lalkar  synopsis:

The film opens with Raghuvaran (Dhanush) winning the Engineer of the Year Award working for Anitha Constructions and is an executive now with a parking spot. His wife Shalini (Amala Paul) becomes an authoritative, nagging wife who controls him. Raghuvaran is also dismissive about his wife getting a job. Vasudhara (Kajol), chairman of a big construction company in South India, makes Raghuvaran a job offer, but he refuses. This offends her and she begins to go after him, placing one obstacle after another. Here the actor for the story turns to be star for stardom. Later Raghu bags a 600 crore project with an Illaiyaraaja song and faces an another villainous person, Prakash (Saravana Subbaiah), a greedy businessman who wants to build a theme park in a marshy land. Other elements that complete the film include soapy sentiments, the Jallikattu protests and the Chennai floods.
