As producer-director-writer, Sidharth Sengupta presents a psychological drama that is interestingly filled with twists, turns, and thriller trappings. The title, as well as several interwoven stories, will undoubtedly conjure up images of SRK and his films, like the iconic ‘palat palat’ sequence from ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.’ Having said that, if you enjoy pulpy Bollywood thrillers from the 90s, ‘YKKA’ is a must-watch. (No Spoilers Ahead!) Finally, it leaves you wanting more while also providing plenty of foreshadowing for the next season.

In a twist greater than any you’re likely to see on the show itself, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein is actually good. A kitsch throwback to both trashy pulp fiction and 90s Hindi cinema, the eight-episode Netflix series is exactly what Haseen Dillruba, in its most salacious dreams, wishes it was.

Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein is a tricky tale. There’s a man with headstrong goals and about to come of age too brutally, there is a naive yet sharp lover who motivates him to achieve that goal, and there is a seductress who only wants the boy no matter what, a gangster father who will make the Sun rise at dusk for his daughter. Only two things can be cultivated out of this dynamic, either a Shakespeare’s tragedy or Indian daily soap opera. Sengupta cultivates the former.

Baazigar, Darr, Anjaam… SRK has done quite a few movies around the theme of obsession, but it’s his harassment at the hands of a lustful femme fatale in Chaahat, the show is closest to in soul. Except Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein has the premise of a movie or, at best, a mini-series that has stretched into a full-fledged season, derailing a freewheeling mix of black humour and situational extremities into a sprawling, clumsy mess.

On top of that, Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein will do anything for effect, rather than look at what makes sense given the situation or the characters involved. There are so many WTF moments in the new Indian Netflix series, leaving the audience no time to discuss or react to them. (It’s a trait Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein shares with Netflix’s previous Indian thriller series, the Raveena Tandon-led Aranyak, from December last year.) You might be tempted to say that Netflix India is kicking off 2022 on a terrible note — but outside of a couple relatively-better-off titles, this is now the rule rather than the exception. Just look at what it gave us last year.
