There are films which rehash every known cliche there is in a genre to strike a chord with the audience and then there are films which take you by surprise for the sheer ingenuity that’s too hard to miss as the story unfolds. Srini Avasarala’s directorial debut film Oohalu Gusagusalaade belongs to the latter category and he makes sure that the film doesn’t lose its charm and innocence till the end.

An impressive beginning while establishing the main characters is very important for any film. But the way characters are introduced in this film is lacklustre. However, the momentum picks up with a beautifully narrated flashback episode. Second half should have been balanced among three characters with a nice play among them. The positive points of the film are tasteful dialogues and music. On the flipside, snail-paced narration and uninteresting screenplay hampers the movie. On a whole, it’s a good attempt to provide a clean and healthy film. We have to wait and see how crowds embrace the movie.

But let us warn you that the kind of humour in Oohalu Gusagusalade and slow narration may not be everyone’s idea of a romantic film. However, those who like slow-paced romantic entertainers and intelligent comedy are bound to enjoy the film. Also, the film’s length should have been cut short and the director should have taken care to give equal prominence to supporting cast.

There have been similar plots in the past, where a middle class or rustic smooth talker coaches a sophisticated youngster. And in most of these films, the audience can predict the end. Yet, what makes Oohalu… refreshing is the way Avasarala narrates the story, drawing from day-to-day incidents that happen in middle class apartments and his observation of people. Well-written romantic comedies are rare in Telugu cinema. Oohalu Gusagusalade is an exception and a delight.

Avasarala’s direction in this movie is average. He should work on his narrative style for better speed. Even though this film is a small budget flick, the production values are equal to a mainstream commercial film. The production house has made sure that they have not compromised on the richness of the film, and have once again proved their conviction towards film making ‘Oohalu Gusa Gusa Laade ‘ is a romantic comedy that will make for a great weekend watch with its good entertainment levels . This is a film that will do well in multiplex areas.
