Rockstar Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive

It’s a far-from-perfect film, but it has honesty and depth which is hard to find in most Hindi films today. Despite several hiccups, especially in the film’s post-intermission portions, Rockstar is an admirable effort if only for how unconventionally director Imtiaz Ali tells this tale of great passion. The romance at the core of this film is a complex one, and the film offers no easy answers. The film’s chief lapses are its meandering script, and its less-than-impressive leading lady, both of which cost the film dearly. Nargis Fakhri is lovely to look at, but offers very little in terms of actingRockstar is never as surefooted as Imtiaz’s breakout hit Jab We Met, but it’s a braver, riskier film than any he’s previously made

The problem with ROCKSTAR is that it starts off most impressively, has some terrific moments in between, but the writing gets so erratic and incoherent as it heads towards the conclusion that you wonder am I really watching an Imtiaz Ali film? On the whole, ROCKSTAR does not live up to the confidence and expectations from the otherwise very skilled and accomplished film-maker Imtiaz Ali. The film suffers immensely due to a disorderly screenplay, especially in its post-interval portions. However, the silver lining or the comforting prospect is the virtuoso performance by Ranbir Kapoor and the captivating score by A.R. Rahman, which justify that one extra star.

Leave it to Imtiaz Ali to take a love story and present it in a manner that’s completely different from run-of-the-mill Bollywood. The highpoint of Rockstar is it’s high tension, high-on-passion romance between two unlikely people: the completely low brow JJ who doesn’t like his girls nice and clean and Heer (Nargis Fakhri), the uptown Stephenian who is all set to get married and settle down to sweet domesticity like all sweet girls do.The fact that this romance unfolds on screen in the form of an explosive musical, capturing JJ’s transmutation into Jordan, the edgy artist, makes the film an absolutely engaging affair. eventually, the film is a milestone in Ranbir Kapoor’s career as an actor and a classic cut from the AR Rahman and Mohit Chauhan combo. Savour a beautiful experience. Watch Rockstar and wait for Imtiaz Ali’s next from his compendium of love.

What’s Good: The performances; the music; the look of the film; the photography and locations. What’s Bad: A couple of questions unanswered in the film; the class appeal of the film; the dark and depressing portions of the second half.Verdict: Rockstar will meet with a mixed response: one section of the audience (mainly youngsters in the cities) will love it while another section (mainly the single-screen audience and public of smaller cities) will find it ordinary

don’t let the title fool you. This movie is more an old-school Bollywood love story than the advent of heavy metal in Hindi cinema. Jordan is more like Devdas than his idol Jim Morrison. But this film is devoid of any insight into an artiste’s anguish, try as it might by quoting Jalaluddin Rumi. There are shades of Jab We Met , in the sense that the first half is full of light-hearted moments between an unlikely pair (in this case Janardhan and Heera Kaul, played by Nargis) and that the second half is intense, with twists. The first half is full of promise, and the gags are funny as you follow the lovably foolish Delhi [ Images ] college kid Janardhan Jhakar’s attempts at being the Robert Plant of Pitampura. But the realism disappears before you can say Sadda Haq. Rockstar is what is called a one-time watch. Just don’t expect too much

in its initial build-up, informed with a robust sense of quirky humour, Rockstar shows a fair degree of promise.Sadly, the narrative, lacks the substance that a film as long as this would have needed to sustain itself. But despite all the frenetic movement in space that Rockstar offers, the film really goes nowehere. It feels strangely static.Rockstar is a gig gone wrong. And that is sad. For there is much in the film that is worth commending.Rockstar has a Sufi soul. If only it had been set free and allowed to go the whole hog!

Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar is a bittersweet journey of a man, an artist, from being an everyman to a superstar.Yet, Imtiaz makes it work somehow, interweaving the fantastical romantic part of the film with the more gritty, dark bits deftly. In the end, how much you enjoy Rockstar will largely depend on whether the balance between the story of a broken, unfulfilled musician and the more conventional love story works for you.

And true to type, the actor is better than the film. ‘Rockstar’ disappoints; Ranbir doesn’t. Till about here, say twenty minutes in, ‘Rockstar’ looks as if there may be something in it, despite the familiar post-teen love tropes that Ali sets up.The second half is a mess, as it travels picturesquely but cluelessly from Kashmir to Prague in search of ideas. And it goes on for much too long, as we wait for something better to happen. Nothing of the sort does.

With flawless first half courtesy engaging narration which strikes a good balance between flashback and present moments, Rockstar starts on a very good note. Rockstar surely rocks in first half but falls on the face as second half begins.Power-packed performances especially Ranbir Kapoor for whom this movie will surely prove to be milestone, hilarious and some intense dialogues, cinematography and music are the strengths. Totally clattered post interval sequences, non-crisp editing and screenplay are the drawbacks.Overall, Rockstar is a one-time watch and worth a treat for both fans and non-fans of Ranbir Kapoor who does justice to his character at every moment in the film.

Imtiaz Ali in all his films, be it ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Luv Aaj Kal’ portrayed passionate true love and he goes a step further with this one. His storytelling is par excellence and is commendable. Another thing that’s worth mentioning is the way he makes his actors perform. The first half an hour is absolutely desi and will totally connect to the masses. The rest of the film, however is very international and good production values. Though, it does get a bit repetitive in the second half. Go watch Rockstar for Ranbir and Imtiaz’s direction. A must watch for all true lovers.

  3. a good movie with good acting from Ranbir especially the college scenes, Nargis looks amazing cute. Good music the party one and Nadaan Parinda… cool songs. mohit chauhan has a great voice..

  4. A corny, pretentious and overlong movie. Tested my patience every moment. Imtiyaz Ali's fall from grace!!!

  5. one of the worst movies ever made…

  6. In the movie Ranbir is told that you need a broken heart to become a rock star….. & I say to love this movie you need a heart…. I have watched it atleast 10 times… & everytime it's a great treat to heart & to ears… Definately not a movie for all.. but whoever for the people with passion & dreams… to those who thibk post half is confusing or not edited well… I think they don't know what a dream is like… It's there & it's not.. in bits & confusing.. but the feeling is always great…..

  7. well I would Simply Give it a 1 Star of 5 ! the stories Been Really Weird ,guess not fully use of the Script ,in Simple they are Really Trying to Add Some Holly in to lolly ….And All Holly is MEANING LESS !

  8. This movie sucks big time!!!

  9. I think the female characters: Nargish's character and that reporter's they lacked some reality character in them.. wasn't strong enough..u know when i watched it the first time I was turned off by the clueless feeling I got at the end ..the second time I watched after a long time..was because the memory of the first feeling I tried to search through…coz the music was so good..was never like typical bolly trendz also to mention the script and the screenplay was atypical and then just that some characters were irritatingly put forth//not enough or not correctly characterized for a strong feeling..i [email protected][email protected]

  10. Yes he does die at the end. If you noticed, the poem in the beginning explained how they would eventually meet far away. That implies that they both die and meet in heaven.
