Entertainment Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:0.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
Anyone who's ever got a bad review tends to believe that movie critics don't want to enjoy a film. That they go into a movie thinking of new and different ways to shred it to bits. That's not true I can assure you. Movie critics - just like everyone else - want to have a good time at the movies. I'm going with half, yes just half out of five, for Entertainment. This could be hazardous to your health; doesn't matter if you're a movie critic or a movie buff, so go in prepared.

Sajid-Farhad have been an integral part of Rohit Shetty's movies and unsurprisingly, Rohit's influence shows in their very first outing as well.. Really, if you need to de-stress yourself, ENTERTAINMENT -- with all its bizarre, outrageous and wacky jokes and superb one-liners -- serves the purpose. However, you cannot disregard the loose ends. The humor quotient goes downhill as the comic villains surface slightly before the intermission. The gags and funny episodes, all of a sudden, take a back seat towards the second hour and though Sajid-Farhad do make an attempt to pack hilarious occurrences, you aren't amused really. On the whole, ENTERTAINMENT is a joy ride that lives up to its title. Go, laugh out loud and get entertained!

On the whole, Entertainment is an entertaining fare but with sectional appeal only. Its ridiculous story-line is a major drawback and will make its appeal restricted. It will be enjoyed by the masses, families and kids. Although it will keep the target audience in splits, its business will be less than its merits because it has just a week-long window, what with eagerly awaited Singham Returns scheduled for release next week. The producers may have made their profit but some of the distributors, particularly those who have paid heavy prices, will not be as lucky.

Debutant-directors Sajid-Farhad, who have the dubious distinction of having written very successful Bollywood no-brainers like the Golmaal series, Dhamaal, and Housefull 2, and who have salvaged themselves to a degree by writing the Singham films, could have salvaged their first directorial venture by keeping it tight, despite the stereotypes. However, because the jokes are repetitive by nature, the LOL (laugh-out-loud) moments are few and far between. The dialogue, which uses Bollywood actor-director names like, "I so Rajani-can't", does get guffaws. But for the most part, the humour is for the child in you.

Entertainment, scripted and directed by super-successful potboiler writers Farhad-Sajid, is unabashedly asinine and delivers anything but what the title promises. Entertainment is the sort of film in which the characters are reduced to exchanging inanities while the dog looks on flummoxed. In the acting department, Entertainment is nearly in the Humshakals league. In other words, it will definitely be in the running for the year's Golden Kela awards. If this is entertainment, what, pray, is torture? Run for cover.

Entertainment is best when it isn’t trying to force laughs out of us with its desperate attempts at wit. Sajid-Farhad’s first film is mostly a garrulous, occasionally comical farce that intermittently serves as reminder that in the search of “entertainment, entertainment, entertainment” one can always rely on the delightfully loony Johnny Lever.

The debutant directors have written such films as ‘Golmaal Returns’, ‘Ready’ and ‘Housefull 2’, so the dialogue, laced with Bollywood jokes and a running Ekta Kapoor gag, comes as no surprise. Neither does the discovery that the film lurches from one scene to another without bothering too much about plot. When all you want is for your actors to mouth a line, a story is pointless extravagance.

Some jokes are too juvenile, some are not in good taste and very few are actually funny. The plot of the film is senseless and full of loopholes.Don't go by the title, it's sure called Entertainment but only if that was enough!

The film lacks a proper script and like most other madcap comic capers, the film uses less heart and no brains at all. Other than few emotional scenes between Junior and Akshay, which might bring back memories of your own pet, there’s nothing too praiseworthy about the plot. ‘Yeh film sirf teen chizon pe chalegi: Entertainment, Entertainment aur Entertainment’. There are some people who are not ‘God-gifted’ but ‘Dog-gifted’. This film is definitely for such people! If you are a dog lover, you must watch it for our little star, Junior. Else, you can just let it pass.

'Entertainment' pleasantly surprises with its delightful absurdity and sure gets you roaring with laughter at several points. Making people laugh is a serious business and the debut director duo (and writers) Sajid-Farhad do a more than decent job of it. This film is child friendly. The humour is clean and not bow bow-dy. After a spate of films that thought funny is talking about someone’s bow bow-el movements, Entertainment comes as a refreshing change. The dialogues, especially the ones given to Krushna Abhishek are super hilarious and must admit, mighty clever.

Entertainment serves trash in the garb of entertaining you. As competent as I think Sajid Farhad are, their filmmaking skills doesn’t reflect their prowess over good writing. Jokes kept flowing thick for the first 15 minutes and everything after that was drab. If you are solely depending on the dog’s cuteness factor for relishing the film, I would recommend a bountiful experience at a dog show for you. Some films don’t deserve audiences, after 140 minutes of sparse laughs and sheer drudgery, I can safely say Entertainment is one of them and take harebrained to another dimension altogether!

If animals could speak, he would probably scoff at the sheer ludicrousness of a plot that sees his owner’s illegitimate son and his best mate bumble about in attempts to kill him off so they could usurp the riches in the bank; all this before the duo turn into good guys to save the mutt and his money from evil family invaders possessing even more melodrama than Rakhee’s obsessive motherly turn in ‘Karan Arjun’

  1. It is a slapstick comedy movie, which can be enjoyed with family and friends. The lead role of Akhil Lokhande played by Akshay Kumar is seen stepping towards success but often end up getting the failures at the end. 12. ENTERTAINMENT:
A new low in entertainment! Lackluster comedy of absurdity!! [1.5/5]

Do not judge a book by its cover and a film by its title, especially if it stars Akshay Kumar. Writer duo Sajid-Farhad’s first outing in direction ENTERTAINMENT sees a new low in the promised territory. With humor largely based on word-play one liners, plot that hardly believes in being logical and performances having tough time to justify even calling them one; it is just another slap-stick, mindless & lackluster comedy of absurdity Akshay Kumar is known to be a master of in recent past. Of course, a lovely addition of a cute dog in the plot is something new & unusual from his rests but that’s it.

Sounding like a film funded and supported by Maneka Gandhi- the famous animal rights activist, ENTERTAINMENT sets a new benchmark in bromance with Akshay Kumar bonding with a rich & wealthy dog smart enough to read books and acts accordingly to defend itself. In a very much Bollywood fashion, Akhil Lokhande [Played by Khiladi Kumar] comes to know of his real father being a Diamond King in Bangkok but till the time he could reach to claim his dead father’s 3000 Cr Empire, a dog named Entertainment has been given all of it in his last will. Rest is how this loyal friend of man wins hearts and after several failed attempts of Akhil trying to kill the dog, the both bonds like any other melodramatic affiliation Bollywood could come up the best.

Sajid-Farhad being a successful duo of writers with more than a couple of 100-Cr films in their kitty, film starts off good with jokes flowing all over; mostly mouthed by TV comic star Krushna playing a partner-in-crime to Akshay. His one-liners that include names of Bollywood actors twisted & linked with the sentences he speaks succeed in tickling you at most but after a point; you don’t really care for him as the mindless plot has already given you much numbness to feel any sensation. Get a flavor of it here so that even you don’t like to buy the tickets, you can have a hint of it…‘I Rajni-can’t believe this’, ‘lag gaya na tujhe A-shock Kumar’, ‘kahaan ja reha hai sonakshi Seen-ha taan ke’ and so on. You may also see it as his extended ‘comedy circus’ act.

ENTERTAINMENT slips off from its track to entertain soon after the intermission when story gets zoomed in to Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood playing Karan-Arjun, overtly emotional villainous brothers with memories of mother holding them together on the lines of Rakhi Gulzar’s character in KARAN ARJUN. Akshay gets into fight mode and then comes the typical Bollywood climax in the hospital where patient is declared dead but punching him hard on the chest in state of rejection could bring him back in life. Medical science has certainly contributed a lot in our happy endings!

Film also doesn’t leave anyone barred from making fun of their caste, colour & creed. So Johny Lever playing the legal advisor named Habibullah constantly faces wrong pronunciations of his name including ‘Gorilla’ ‘Lulla’ and what not! You can hear an ‘azaan’ like sound in the background whenever he’s hurt. At last, it is nothing but a directionless shot to force the ill-shaped meaning of ‘Entertainment’ i.e. hitting the 100 Cr mark anyhow, by any means. As Krushna’s Character would speak, “Iss film se entertainment ki Aasha Parekh ki, toh aapke dimaag ki Anupam Kher nahin’! [1.5/5]

  13. ENTERTAINMENT: "SIMPLY ZERO ENTERTAINMENT; SAVE YOUR BUCKS"
    (0.5/5)

I just want to keep the review shortest as possible because the heavy headache after watching this outrageously stupid movie ain't stepping out!
1st thing- The trailer was not so bad. Plus, I expected something good from Mr.Kumar in comic genre since his last few outings had been ridiculous (Baring Special 26 & the decent Holiday). But, I am completely blown away. What the hell?, oh no, let me correct; Why the hell he signs movies like this?
I have lost my trust on him.

The movie is completely trashy. It can compete well with Humshakals and definitely be on top worst movies of Akshay.

The Gags (no LOL moment. Even you can't smile properly) are very bad. Even the scenes looked stretched because they bore you down badly. Krushna starts very early in the movie with his one liners and starts in a bearable way but by the end, it gets so much annoying that you just wanna move out of the theatre.

Just for the sake of reviewing here and at least trying to save your hard earned money, I watched it till the very last song in the credits. Otherwise I had a very strong urge many times to just leave this torturous movie.

The music is poor. JOHNNY- JOHNNY too sounded very bad with the flow of the movie.

Performances are no doubt worse. Must say, Johnny lever was best of the lot accompanied with the Smart Dog- Junior.

I just don't wanna review further. It sucked badly. Also, the movie ain't for family audience. Vulgar and cheap jokes too included.
    My Friday gone bad.

Anyways, Guardians of the Galaxy awaits to be watched tonight.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS NON-SENSE ENTERTAINMENT COZ IT NEVER LIVES UP TO IT'S TITLE. (0.5/5)

  23. Reviewers look for soft targets like this type of movies to show their 'critics' writing skills. nothing matters if people in theater are laughing, this is what the film intends.
Leave the einstein inside you outside the theater, and you will enjoy it.

This movie wastes no time to get funny, right from 1st minute. 1st half is simply hilarious.
I agree comedy quotient goes down in 2nd half, but drama at end is good.
Akshay is good as always. Johny lever, krushna, tamannah all does well too.
Music is awesome. specially tera naam doon in opening credits. Johny Johny is excellent.

On the whole, it could have been better, but i leave theatre satisfied. Dont miss end credits !!!

  26. #Aa_Gaye_Munde_UK_De : The movie is directed by famous director of punjabi film industry i.e. #Manmohan_Singh & I must say that like all his previous movies, he takes it forward with ease. The story is not much different from its prequel but its presented in such a manner that we are forced to enjoy it throughly. All the actors act finely with a special mention to #Gurpreet_Ghuggi Sir & #Jimmy_Shergill Sir who hold the movie with their humour & natural act that adds life to the movie & all that credit goes to #Ranbir_Rana Sir who have written dialouges which are full of fun & frolic. #Binnu_Dhillon Sir does not get much scope in a special appearance but all he does is good. All in all, the movie is full on family entertainment which should be given a watch.

    Final verdict : 3.5*/5.

The movie deserves 3* rating but a half '*' extra just for #Ghuggi Bhaji & #Jimmy Bhaji.

#Entertainment : I had huge expectations after all the good reviews from critics & good word of mouth by public but this one did not match any of my expectations. The movie is entertaining but in parts. Each & every gag has a laugh out loud moment but the main problem with the movie is that the gags do come but after long & regular breaks. #Akshay_Kumar Sir as usual acts brilliantly in his comic role but the the director did not know how to utilise him. All the actors have done justice to their role in a particular manner. A message of humanity & loyality is also given to us which however saves the movie. Not talking much about the movie, I would like to conclude that it would not be liked by most of the people but it would definitely be loved by those who are attached to their pets & would even fetch tears from their eyes at the end.

Final verdict : 2*/5 if you are in for entertainment.
But 3.5*/5 for you have love for pets.

"Do comment & share your views if you have seen any of the movies." :)

  28. It is often said that ‘A dog is man’s best friend’ but what if that little creature claims to be the heir of 3000 crores? Surprising? Indeed, it is!
Yes, this exactly is the plot of the new release ‘Entertainment’ which is also supposed to be the debut of the director duo Sajid-Farhad.

Akhil (Akshay Kumar) is trying his best to earn every single penny, by doing random jobs, to save his father (Darshan Jariwala) who is hospitalized. He also has a lady love Saakshi (Tamannah Bhatia) who works in television soaps and a dear friend Jugnoo (Krishna Abhishek) who sells pirated bollywood DVD’s.
Soon Akhil realizes that Darshan Jariawala is not his real father, but he is the son of the famous diamond merchant of Bangkok, Pannalal Johari (Dalip Tahil). Just when he begins to celebrate his luck, he comes to know about the demise of his real father.
Akhil soon rushes to Bangkok to claim his wealth of 3000 crores but gets shocked when he is told that Pannalal Johari has made his dog, Entertainment, his legal heir.

Sajid Farhad, the debutant director duo, have been a vital part of many Bollywood blockbusters like Housefull 2 , Singham, Golmaal Returns and Chennai Express. What’s disturbing is that in spite of being the writers for such big commercial successes, the duo could not produce a good script for themselves.
Entertainment is definitely low on content but it is even worse at comedy. There are hardly any good punches to tickle your bones plus the irritating scenes constantly test your patience.

Akshay Kumar does not sound to be funny anymore. I believe it is high time now for him to realize that these types of films won’t help him much. Tamannah is disgusting, yet another flop show in a row for her. Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood are wasted. Krishna and Johny Lever can be your only rescue to the film.

If you thought Sajid Khan’s ‘Humshakals’ was pathetic, try this one folks, it is a disaster. Stay as much away as you can!

    Rating- 1/5

  32. Hi,
I just watched the Movie Krrish 3 in a single screen. Well, I must say onething that this movie is Simply Awesome. Many comparing this movie with Hollywood and saying its not Upto mark, which is quite unfair. Because everybody know what is the level of Bollywood Movies w.r.t. Hollywood. Hollywood movie has a budget of 1000s of Crores where as Bollywood is still in sub 100 crore. Instead of comparing this Movie with Hollywood we should understand that "This kind of Movie may not release before 2020", so we should Enjoy this movie now or never. If we inspire this movie then there is a chance of getting better in future.. If we reject it, its our foolish!!

Now, About the Movie: The Movie has Simple yet Entertaining Story. But the Execution is Very Nice. There are some slow moments but that lasts only for 2-5 minutes maximum. The Background score is simply Awesome. The Special Effects are BEST in the Class. The actors and actress are looking gorgeous. I liked Kangana Ranaut more than Priyanka Chopra. Kangana is Looking More Beautiful and Sexier than Priyanka. The Songs are Not Very good but they are according to the situation because this is not a Romantic Movie, so they should be treated as good. The Sound effect is just amazing. You will hardly find any slow moment in the Movie. its a Complete Entertainer. Overall, its a must watch for everyone. If you have watched many Hollywood Movies in THEATER, then you may be little upset but if You have seen them in TV, then I am Sure You will love it in Big Screen. I will rate this movie 3 star + 1 star for the courage of Roshan family for such a risk...
I will like to request all to watch the Movie with Family and kids..

  34. Entertainment is a slapstick comedy film directed by famous dialogue writer duo Sajid-Farhad. Story of the film is not so good but screenplay is but its also has some dull moments but the dialogues makes the superb laugh ride makes us happy. Some scenes in climax Johnny Lever throws the knives on thugs is lifted from chinese flick Kung Fu Hustle and Akshay Kumar is attacking by the thug with a Axe and he takes a Trishul is lifted from South Indian Flick Athadu. Akshay Kumar has Fabulous Job, Tamannah has given a nice performance, Johnny Lever, Krushna Abhishek, Mithun Chakraborty has given firstrate Performance, Prakash Raj and Sonu Sood has solid comedic villianism in performance. Hence Entertainment is Laughable Entertainer but its story makes us dissapoints us. 3.5/5 stars.
