Suri, a competent director, who has a knack for ripping off foreign films and 'Indianizing' them by adding a romantic subplot and a superhit soundtrack, employs the same formula here. The victim on this occasion is the Korean revenge saga, 'I Saw The Devil' It's a shame then that despite the uniformly impressive performances, and Suri's nifty directing skills, the film is only moderately fulfilling. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for 'Ek Villain'. If you're still wondering, the real villain here is the lousy script.

Mohit makes EK VILLAIN an enthralling experience, no two opinions on that. Although a number of movies have focused on serial killers, the talented raconteur along with screenplay writer Tushar Hiranandani makes sure they pack several remarkable twists that transcend the genre, making it a novel experience for the spectator.T he writing, in short, keeps you captivated right through the finale, which, again, is not of the run of the mill variety. On the whole, EK VILLAIN is a stylish, spellbinding and terrifying edge-of-the-seat thriller. It's a step forward in this genre, without doubt. A sure-shot winner!

On the whole, Ek Villain is a super-hit, a blockbuster. It will score in the multiplexes and the single-screen cinemas, in ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres, and will be loved by the masses and the classes alike. It has tremendous repeat value – yes, tremendous repeat value despite being a suspense thriller.

Inspired largely by Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-Woon's I Saw the Devil (2010), Mohit Suri's romantic thriller is Bollywoodised for the desi market. While the Korean film relied on too much blood and gore, Suri's film mixes romance and violence in equal measure, letting the plot meander a bit but allowing for some sharp twists as well You cannot fault the scale of Ek Villain or berate its lead star cast. But you wish you could celebrate this thriller like you did Suri's last movie outing Aashiqui 2. This one lacks soul.

The biggest of the villains in Mohit Suri's Ek Villain is the screenplay itself. It is as muddled as a serial killer's twisted mind and just as destructive. A vapid love story dovetailed into a confused psychological thriller. Ek Villain is all empty flash and flourishes. Its plot, the essence of which is lifted from the 2010 Korean thriller, I Saw The Devil, is riddled with trite contrivances. Ek Villain is, in the end, a revenge drama with a laboured closure whose utter farcicality is in keeping with the rest of the film.

Hence we have Ek Villain, where we take a hardboiled Korean film -- full of brutal gore and s**ual abuse but enough panache to stay constantly gripping -- and inexplicably scramble it into a s**-less, gore-less slasher film with a wide-eyed love story running through it all. Gone are the thrills from the original and in come the cliched background score, watered-down murder scenes, and much, much silliness. If I were to review it in one word, I’d say Ek Villain is... Unnecessary. Given free tickets, sure, you could escape Humshakals in theatres this weekend with this mediocre effort, but I say do yourself a favour and seek out the Korean DVD

Mohit Suri has a gift for vivid characterisation, even if some things are underlined a tad too much. He also does a good job with weaving high-octane moments around his characters. So you don’t really twig on to the plot’s hokeyness to begin with. Ek Villain’s swinging between drama and melodrama is its weakness: the portions I bought into kept me engrossed, and then I was back in those in which I couldn’t suspend disbelief.

Unlike most of the below average stuff Bollywood unleashes on us every Friday, Ek Villain stands out for its ingenuity: the story is intriguing, the suspense dark and haunting. And, it does not leave you even more confused!Watch Ek Villain for an amazing performance by Riteish Deshmukh, the music (which is already a hit) and a well-knit plot. This is certainly not a film you would want to miss.

When you walk into the theatre to watch a thriller, you naturally expect the twists and turns in the tale to keep you at the edge of your seat. But that doesn’t happen in Ek Villain (you figure most of it out pretty soon). And by interval point, the suspense is out for all to see. However, the parallel past and present tracks blend intricately together to keep you glued to the screen. Though indulgent in parts, Ek Villain packs in a punch. Copy of a Korean film or not, it’s ‘good’ paisa vasool entertainment. Make it your weekend watch.

Filmmaker Mohit Suri's latest film Ek Villain is inspired by the South Korean revenge film I Saw the Devil. Although, it is quite evident that the action is toned down for the Indian audience. The film has a lot of interesting portions but the plot is full of loopholes. Mohit Suri has managed one big thing and that's getting some of the best performances out of all the three actors. Even after a lot of flaws Ek Villain is a decent watch but it could have been much better!

Shockingly, it’s not so bad. Suri takes the core of I Saw The Devil and turns it into a melodramatic, manipulative, pyaar-mohabbat-dardi-humdardi drama. One of the reasons the original is a classic is that it skips over the love story and focuses purely on the revenge section. They also add in two hours of love story – because you should feel for the revenge-seeker’s loss and justify his actions. And what a love story.

Ek Villian is a revenge drama; but not like ones the Hindi audiences have been exposed to. Mohit Suri's latest offering is not for people with a weak stomach. It is brutal and relentless. The best thing about this vendetta of violence is that once it gets going, it sweeps you up in it. If you're looking for a edgy thriller with some romance and great songs, Ek Villian is for you.

Ek Villain folds out quite contrary to its simplistic name. Told with an even pitch, the film isn’t anything like the run-in-the-mill stories we are subjected to watch every week. This is sheer compelling commercial cinema that has a lucid story and its heart in the right place, without indulging in anything stoop! Mohit Suri doesn’t depend on ‘signpost’ characters; surprising and gratifying you in equal measures. I don’t even care if this film is a rip off of some obscure Korean flick, this is a smashingly effective one! The film’s riveting rhythm, breathtaking performances especially from Sidharth and Riteish and the fantastic writing makes for a magnificent, racy and emotional watch.

His movies are about never about the story but the soothing sound tracks and little-known actors and plots that are referenced from Hollywood. ‘Ek Villian’ is all that, and more. It's a classic case of bad casting. While Riteish Deshmukh makes an earnest effort, Mohit Suri fails to guide his other actors. If you thought ‘Humshakals’ was overloaded with bad jokes, then you are wrong. Mohit gives Sajid Khan a good fight with ‘Ek Villain’. The humour here is unintentional, of course!

  3. The movie is a copy of korean film I Saw Devil with indian sentiments and romance added to it. The most irritating part of the movies is heroine Aisha played by Shradha kapoor, her dialogues are sooo crap that you'll hate her the moment you see her on screen (By the way I liked her in Ashiqui2). She desperately tries to be Asin of Gajini and impress the hero. There is no real suspense in the movie as Ritesh kills her in first 10 min itself and the rest of the story revolves around how the hero takes revenge without killing him.
My rating 2/5. watch if you have not seen I saw devil.

  4. "The Korean film I SAW DEVIL as well as EK VILLAIN -- focus on the serial killer and how the male protagonist, whose life has overturned due to a distressing occurrence, courtesy the serial killer, gets even with the antagonist. The resemblance ends there(Taran Adarsh)". Well Mr. Taran Adarsh since I have watched Ek Villain I can say that the movies is rip off of I Saw Devil, either you have not watched the korean film or the producers of Ek villain has paid you well. The mistake I did was to watch I saw devil since there were rumors about the film being a remake.
Overall the movie is average and predictable.

  5. Aisha is a terminally ill girl, Guru is a ruthless gunda with horrible childhood, Rakesh is a obsessed husband who is made fun by everyone, KRK is Rakesh's colleague and male chauvinist. Aisha has a set of wish to fulfill before she die, which includes making Guru a good person and she successfully manage to do that, they get married and Guru finds a new job. Rakesh kills every other girl who makes fun of him one of which happens to be a pregnant Aisha, after killing the victim he gifts their belonging to his ever scolding wife. Guru tracks down Rakesh by seeing a random kid with a paper fan in church(Only Aisha could make those fan in whole of Mumbai). Guru plans to have his revenge slowly however not killing Rakesh. Finally Rakesh is killed by a random guy in a mahindra scorpio. Guru is a changed man now and adopts now dead Rakesh's orphan child.

    2. Mr. Anonymous, you forgot to write that the Mahindra Scorpio which kills Rakesh has Lord Ganesh car charm. Aisha worshipped Lord Ganesha and it was Lord Ganesha who took revenge of Aisha's death. :) .. However, great summary.

  6. Average movie with predictable plot, you will not enjoy the movie if you have watched I saw Devil, good music, good acting by Ritesh deshmuk, Sidharth is good in acting however in action sequence especially the one in boat yard,he is horrible!! Shradha kapoor is pathetic you'll wish she never comes on screen. One time watch for Ritesh Deshmuk

    ReplyDelete
  7. Sidharth has the potential to be the next star, after two dull outings he delivers a good performance. As the police officer in the films asks(Manager in Ashiqui2) him,"Tere jism mein aisa kya hai,ke koi buddi you jawan ladki tere khilaf gawa dena mana deta hai".

Great opening expected, one time watch, could have been a better movie if they had wrote Aisha's dialogue well, you won't be able to stand when she opens her mouth.

  29. EK VILLAIN: An intense love-story or unintentionally funny thriller? [2/5]

Negative attracts. Villains get most of the claps. Well, mostly. So in case, if you make it to resist yourself from falling over your current heartthrobs on screen; Shraddha Kapoor riding high on AASHIQUI 2’s success and the cute-faced, no-nonsense and impressively the most sincere looking student of Kjo’s school Sidharth Malhotra respectively for boys & girls; you have also on board one of the most deliciously mystified villain played by Riteish Deshmukh. A perfect casting, quite enticing in this case is a fool-proof strategy to bring big numbers in theatres and at the box-office both. Half battle is won.

Now, let’s have some crisp, meaty, tense, on the edge plot that could have the audience seated for longer than interval at least. Plot? Really? Aren’t we asking for much, especially in Bollywood? But why to worry if there are plenty of inspirations floating all over the cinema-world! And the team chooses South Korean revenge thriller I SAW THE DEVIL. With added melodic music that includes an item number too, anyone would have predicted ages before going on the floor that the film will be a success in all respects. It looks. It sounds. It appears but sadly and only on paper. It’s time to face some reality. Mohit Suri’s EK VILLAIN is a mishmash of a love-story that tries hard to be intense and an unintentional revenge drama that thrills only at one occasion or two.

Ethically, there is not much to unravel in the plot as it being a suspense thriller, though you can easily predict it from a mile away. So, let’s stick to the characters and not the major events. Shraddha Kapoor plays Ayesha- a girl in high spirits with her bucket-list of dreamy wishes like watching peacocks dancing in the ‘first’ rain of the season, catching a butterfly and you can go on & on with a wide-eyed expression of ‘How romantic!’ on your face. She also loves to talk in a manner tried & tested well before by all prominent Bollywood heroines from Hema Malini in ‘SHOLAY’ to Asin in ‘GHAZNI’. She comes last in the list of ‘who performed well’.

In execution of one of these silliest wishes, she seeks help of a cold-blooded murderous henchman Guru, played by yours truly Sidharth wearing a grumpy look on face from the acting rulebook. What happens next? Any guesses? No, he doesn’t kill the girl. No, the girl doesn’t kill him for what he’s done but they both fall in love. I bet you haven’t had it in your weirdest dream. Enters Riteish playing Rakesh, a simple-sober-soft spoken regular guy who doesn’t want much in life but to be a hero for his son and wife! With a nagging, beating & harassing wife [played by Aamna Sharif], it is quite an impossible task. So, the constantly piling anger, frustration and rage arouse the violent streak in the guy. How the three cross each other’s path is better left unspoken.

At best, EK VILLAIN is a melodramatic average Bollywood thriller with predictably ridiculous storyline that barely imposes any sense of emotional connect to any of the characters. They are loud screaming hard to make themselves noticed. The twists and turns are some relief in order to infuse some excitement. In one of scenes, Kamaal Rashid Khan of ‘DESHDROHI’ is seen justifying domestic violence on women as a part of common middle-class men’s stress-release process. If a writer could come up with such character on screen that too without giving him a proper lesson at the end, I mourn the death of sensibility in such creative area of work. Even my anger is piling up for obvious reasons! Let’s end it here and here! [2/5]

  40. Ek villain was supposed to be an intense thriller but it disappoints big time. Irony is there is no such thrill or suspense.. the makers tried to setup an emotional connect wid audience sumting in line with gajni but messesd up badly.. romantic chemistry is too weak n cliche.. revenge drama is too repetitive n boring. Neither action is good nor the revenge plot. Funniest part is hero finds da psyco killer of his wife siting in a church.. like a piece of cake..from murder to revenge everyting in da story seems easy n lacks thrill.. Shraddha kapoor fails to impress. Ritesh looks better in promos n gets repetative here.. siddhartha malhotra looks convincing n promising. Prachi desai item song was unnecessary and just to giv her some publicity for being ekta's muse. Krk is irritatingly funny but u blink n miss him..

In short its a total timepass movie. . Mohit suri's direction is a let down dis tym.. balaji once again try to mek a movie in cheapest possible budget.. faking snowfall n sea glitters by vfx is unacceptable in movies.. watch dis movie only if u r too excited to watch ek villain and u got muny n tym to waste else wait for dvd release or tv telecast.. my rating 2/5

  41. #Punjab1984 : I do not have words to explain my emotions and the way I controlled my tears to roll down my eyes. This movie is a sensation in the punjabi film industry. Each and every scene compells you to cry, cry out loud and each and every dialouge is clap worthy. The act of #KirronKher is just tremendous. No one else could have carried this role as she has done. She added the life to the character in such a way as if it was really happening with our mother. She is just outstanding and no surprise if she wins the award for the best actress this year. #PawanMalhotra (Thanedaar - Rana) is another sensation just like the movie. The main villain of the movie overshadows even a great actor and singer like #DiljitDosanjh. He is capable of making a fearful atmosphere and does it with ease. Coming to the performance of the #Diljit_Dosanjh, he is excellent in all the emotional scenes but lacks energy and anger in the scenes where needed. However, its good to see him in such a different and challenging role. The dialouges and the songs are top notch. Hats off. And one more thing, if you think you have controlled your tears then there would be a heart aching song suddenly tearing your heart apart and you will definitely melt down. Overall, its a must watch punjabi movie once again after #JattJamesBond and this movie, "#Punjab_1984" deserves to go for the #Oscars.

    Final verdict : 5*/5.

Yes, this one deserves a 5* rating. Must watch.

#Ek_Villain_There_Is_One_In_Every_Love_Story : The movie boosts off with all the thrill and chill you expect and does satisfy you but the thing where we think it goes down is the revealing of the #Villain just after first 45 minutes but as I said we think the movie will sink down but it does not and all this credit goes to #RiteshDeshmukh who delivers such a brilliant performance that you will definitely think atleast 10 times before abusing or shouting at any person. He is the strength of the movie with his multi expression looks that change all of a sudden. #ShraddhaKapoor is too cute that you want more of her but movie is of 2 hours only (LOL). #SiddharthMalhotra is good and delivers outstanding performance but at the end of the day, its #Ritesh_Deshmukh who steals the show with his looks and act. However, the climax of the movie could have been better. The music is the soul of the movie and just like #Aashiqui2, it forces you to fall in love with it and the love story. All in all, its a must watch movie, NOT A THRILLER MOVIE but a PSYCHO MOVIE. Go for it. Recommended.

    Final verdict : 4*/5.

One more thing, if you are planning to watch both the movies, then you must watch "Ek Villain" before "Punjab 1984" as you will come out mentally upset after "Punjab 1984" and you might not be able to enjoy "Ek Villain" that much as it is an entertaining fare.

  46. Hi Frndz have been following all you guys and use to decide whther to watch a movie or not only after analyzing all reviews and comments from you all.

But sorry to say Ek Villain is seriously painful outing and i am yet to understand why the movie was made in first place. This was just an attempt to encash the starcast where Shraddha Kapoor has just given Aashiqui2, Siddharth Malhotra is new lad trying to make his mark and popular among young fans.

Biggest disappointment is how on earth you can kill the movie in first 10 minutes and then make audience go thru the pain.

    My Rating - 1*/5*

I am not a great critic or someone with calibre of Gaurav Rai whom i really appreciate but being a movie buff who has not yey lost sense of good movies.

All the Best to all who still want to waste money on such foolish movie.

A mix of everything that is in your fridge will make a dish that you can name as 'ek villian'..from a middle class psycho on the streets who loves to kill only girls that irritate him..then a gangster who has only one expression on his face throughout...even in his own marriage. ..a girl who has a bucket list before she dies of a terminal disease ...yet looks in the pink of health throughout the film..then some dangerous character like remo as don...each and every character is so much laughable. .what a kichdi movie...The only saving grace for the movie is the songs especially galliyan...Besides shraddha has almost the same acting style as her earlier film..siddharth is more like a mannequin with a similar face expression pasted on him....the only true character was KRK... acting as... KRK himself in real life. ..what an overhyped 3 hours of insanity...it's difficult to understand what was the purpose of making such a film...but one thing should be crystal clear to all girls ...never nag with a middle class working employee or else. ..you could be dead...OR JUST WATCH THIS MOVIE ..YOU WOULD BE BRAIN DEAD EITHER WAY. ..

  48. This movie is not that bad, a new type of theme, 2.1/5...the suspense is not who killed her but it is why, dont you know from the starting the who killed even from the trailer one average person can guess who it just why??? yes there is nothing not much new and special in the story, if you get nothing to do then go and watch the movie!
(2 seems less for the movie and 2.5 seems too much)

  56. The Indian audiences are now used to stories which have- ‘a hero, a heroine and a villain’! The hero saves the heroine from the villain and they get happily married. That has been the solid formula in the bollywood around which almost every Indian movie revolves. Mohit Suri has always been known for his unorthodox direction. Plus his last film (Aashiqui 2) being such a commercial success, the standards are already set high for his new flick ‘Ek Villain’.

As the name suggests, Ek Villain is the story of a villain, in fact it is a ‘love story’ of a villain. Guru (Sidharth Malhotra) is a local goon who works for the Goan Don. He soon meets Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor), who is full of life and makes every attempt to help the needful. Guru slowly and gradually gets mesmerized by Aisha’s qualities and the two fall for each other. They shift to Mumbai and get married. Just when everything was perfect, Aisha is attacked by a psychopath, Rakesh (Ritesh Deshmukh). Now how does Guru finds Rakesh? What is motive of Rakesh behind this murder?

Ek Villain is narrated in a flashback where in the very first scene Aisha is attacked by this psychopath. It does starts on a very high note but the pace gradually falls. And that is its biggest problem. Mohit Suri tried too hard to be different this time, but unfortunately failed. A film which had the potential of being a classic falls short apart of not even being a good watch.

Sidharth Malhotra still needs to learn how to act. He hardly looks convincing with the role. I think Shradha Kapoor is still not out of Aashiqui 2’s success, almost a similar kind of acting. Ritesh Deshmukh impresses the most. After a long time I have seen him doing such a thing beyond his comic comforts. Oh, did I mention KRK? Well, he is there to torture you as well.

Overall, ‘Ek Villain’ is not even a film you can watch for a good time pass. If you still want to watch it, watch it for Ritesh Deshmukh. He won’t let you down.

    Rating- 2/5
