REVOLVER RANI comes across as a distant cousin of BULLETT RAJA and GANGS OF WASSEYPUR. Director Sai Kabir attempts to amalgamate a love story with hi-octane drama, political maneuvers and rustic action and also coats it with the local flavor to make it seem authentic and bona fide, but something's amiss. After a fairly engrossing first hour, the post-interval portions slide downwards. On the whole, REVOLVER RANI has engaging moments, but they are few and far between. This being Kangna's immediate film release after the remarkable success of QUEEN may benefit the film to an extent.

Revolver Rani establishes Kangana Ranaut as the most fearless actress in Bollywood. After winning our hearts as the achingly naïve dumped bride in Queen, she does a 360-degree flip in this film. As the psychotic, murderous, s**ually ravenous dacoit turned politician Alka Singh, she is frankly ugly, literally and figuratively. Some of this works and some of it doesn’t. But what keeps Revolver Rani together are the performances and the sly humour. If you like uplifting, cheerful cinema, then this isn’t the movie for you. But if, like me, you can enjoy bad people doing bad things, then Revolver Rani will be fun.

While some portions are interesting and entertaining, there are also some parts which are boring and appear stretched. On the whole, Revolver Rani is entertaining in parts but lack of hit and popular music and the unexplained conflict of the second half will tell on its business. Connoisseurs of different cinema will like the film but that will not be enough to recover the cost, given the film’s dull opening.

Revolver Rani is perfect on paper but if it really wanted to generate that spark, it should have probably taken the character-centric route. Somewhere along the way, the story disappears and so does the editor, or so it seems.A lot of Revolver Rani seems to have come from ‘inspiration’ that was obviously drawn from Quentin Tarantino films.Even the animated bits seem to be borrowed from Kill Bill Vol 1. This does end up spoiling the novelty factor. Revolver Rani could have been the film of the year. It is sad that all is chose to be was confused in the end.

Revolver Rani, for all its retro style and ingredients, is certainly not that ancient in spirit and substance. But it does draw heavily from old Hindi movie traditions while completely demolishing the dependence of the political thriller on conventional machismo.Mercifully, Revolver Rani is not a case of an overreaching writer-director biting off more than he can chew. The screenplay stays on course even when the drama teeters on the edge of the outrageously bizarre. Revolver Rani may lack star power, but it has no dearth of firepower.

Sai Kabir's skill lies in his satirical story-telling and style, not so much the plot. The crux is simple - power, politics and revenge. It's a combo of cool and crass - the kind of stuff pulp fiction is made of. Often textured in Quentin Tarantino style, he sets the mood with a notorious mix of quirkiness, violence and an eclectic background score. The second half is stretched, the songs interrupting the pace. Some dark, humorous moments (even the background score) are quite inspired by 'Kill Bill'. 'Revolver Rani' is loaded with a lot more than just gunpower. You'll enjoy biting this bullet.

This Rani, who hefts revolvers and shoots to kill, is neither wholly a cartoon figure, nor completely credible. This confusion makes us stop suspending disbelief, and ‘Revolver Rani’ becomes a tiresome Bollywoodesque trudge through the Chambal, and its men and one woman posturing with guns, and the standard corrupt ‘netas’ and complicit cops. This Chambal ki Rani is not for Kangana Ranaut. Rajouri wins hands down.

Tighter editing is what the movie lacks. At some points the scenes actually drag, and one kind of wishes that the cast would just get on with the final act. The movie seems to be an attempt to set up Tarantino’s world in Bollywood, which may lead to it finding limited takers. Kangana delivers her acting chops, but this Rani may not be able to score over the Rani of Queen.

It is impressive how the director represent her pain, trauma and the ecstasy on finding her new love. While Kangana's desi accent, dark humor, background score work in favour of the film, its over-stretched sequences to get the point across should have been avoided. All in all, 'Revolver Rani' is Kangana Ranaut's film.

The film starts with much promise, with a kind of quirkiness and black humour that fits well with the subject in hand. The narration and the background music work in absolute tandem to bring us a satire that succeeds in making you chuckle more often than not. But unfortunately, some scenes are so long drawn out that the whole impact begins to fizzle out by the end of it.Watch it for Kangana Ranaut and the music.

Sai Kabir’s movie ‘Revolver Rani’ wobbles trying to balance Bollywood sensibilities with a racy Quentin Tarantino-styled plot. Revolver Rani’ is about the dirty politics, the Bollywood dreams, and the earning for a life uncompromised and loved. While it’s got many extraordinary characters, some incredibly wicked lines and a few well-written power-packed sequences, Sai’s unable to piece them together to make it work as a whole.Although Kangana makes ‘Revolver Rani’ work on so many levels, the movie doesn’t do her justice. We honestly wish it had.

Revolver Rani is a commendably tantalizing attempt for Bollywood. Kangana’s calling it shots (quite literally) paired with her wicked conniving smile is tempting. The narrative in its illustrious moments lures us into its absorbing premises before turning languid. Though the product was made with a more competent vision in mind, the execution wasn’t tempered correctly which makes the film fall a few notches. For the mettlesome imagination, Revolver Rani makes for a gripping watch.

  2. Revolver Rani is a rom com which goes into the deadly world of goons, where guns speak in volume.

Sai Kabir, who has Kismat Conncetion and Lahma to his credit for story and screenplay, has come up with a unique masala entertainer, which once again doesn’t allow your conscious to emphasise much over the logics of the story.

Alka Singh (Kangana Ranaut), is a gruesome leader of a political party in Chambal but falls weaker for her love Rohan (Vir Das) who is a struggler in Bollywood. On the other hand, Rohan wants to use her as a ladder to climb up in Bollywood but he ends up being her lust instrument.

The opposition- the Tomar party headed by Udaybhan Tomar (Zakir Hussain) along with brother Govind Tomar (Pankaj Saraswat) want to destroy Alka completely and when they realise about her love interest they plan to deal with it emotionally.

How Rohan finds himself trapped in this whole political fuss and how Alka saves him from being targeted by the opposition party, Kabir Sai narrates this complete scenario in his unusual mode of satirical humour.

Though, mostly unbelievable but the Revolver Rani has its heart at right place. With ‘desi’ politics and use of broken English dialects, the flick features the utmost real attitude of goons and politicians in the urban areas. Particularly the dialogues, written by Kabir himself, are surely to go down well with masses.

Sai Kabir’s screenplay is mostly its weakest point but there are ample sequence to paint over the other blemishes in the storyline. The characterisation of the characters in the land of dead is mostly humourous.

Kabir influentially balances the action and love elements in the flick. Of course one would feel that how a politician like Alka can be so berserk for her love and fashion but its attitude which Kabir portrays through Kangana.

She is the one, who is not looking back again. The actress after ‘Queen’ has come up with stronger performance this time. Her dialogue delivery with performance is extra ordinary.

Vir Das excels in his act. He meticulously plays the Bollywood struggler and once again is perfect in his comedy timing.

  7. REVOLVER RANI:
Loud, laborious and lethargic desi-ode to Tarantino! [2/5]

In Sai kabir’s REVOLVER RANI- an underwhelming homage to Quentin Tarantino style Filmmaking, Sai often takes his narrative to a local TV News anchor who loves to connect and end every breaking news piece with some popular Bollywood songs. Her local flavor in the diction, interesting writing and primitiveness in the enactment never goes wrong, not even for a single time. This is probably one and only element in the film that is constantly entertaining, remarkable, convinced and believably relatable. For the rest, REVOLVER RANI is a loud, laborious and lethargic outing in search of pleasurable entertainment.

The daredevil dacoit of Chambal, Alka Singh [Kangana Ranaut in form] is a tigress with gun in her hands that can walk fearlessly into its rival’s den, shoot its mouth off, shower as much bullet in the stock and return back winning all the claps and whistles. ‘Fashion, fun and gun’ is what describes her ferociously wild flashy character the best but at the same time, she is a trapped soul in the hostile world of politics, power and position driven by bullet and ballot both. If not fighting back in stride with her rival gang the corrupt politician trio Tomar brothers [Zakir Hussain, Kumud Mishra & Pankaj Saraswat], Alka loves to explore the arena of love with her lover Rohan [Vir Das in a regular but meatier role], a struggling actor in Bollywood. Things go erratic when Alka gets pregnant and that could possibly turn into a serious threat to all the prospects her mentor [Piyush Mishra saving some grace] had eyed for.

Sai sets the mood perfectly with real locations, interesting characters, local dialect and the scheming political scenario everyone can relate to. Extended shootouts weaved in with gun-shots and music, satirical approach in the narrative and the stylized action sequences are clearly Tarantino effect but it’s the lifeless story and scattered screenplay that hardly do any better to the promising premise. Entertainment comes in bits and pieces and for the most, the whole 2 hour 15 minutes looks like a never ending journey in the tiring terrain of Chambal itself. Music is another letdown as it plays one of the most prominent parts in such film and can never be less than a driving force to the film.

Kangana Ranout, after her super-delightful performance in QUEEN is back with a character that needs guts and a certain kind of spark to set the screen on fire. Sadly, Kangana puts her best but the writing doesn’t give her what she deserves. Vir Das is likeable in parts. Watch him explaining how his situation in the film at that time finds similarities with Hollywood actor Daniel Day-Lewis and it’s all about being a true actor. Funnier than you think! Piyush Mishra shows his mastery over the art and though he’s more visible in second half, he captures your attention in total effect. Zakir Hussain, Kumud Mishra and Pankaj Saraswat as witty villains are good to watch.

In nut shell, REVOLVER RANI is a sad victim of baffled screenplay that loses its steam way before the end. Even good performances and fascinating characters aren’t good enough to make your day. Avoid this messy ride of bullet, ballot and bizarre ballet of love! [2/5]

  8. Today, we have Revolver Rani hitting the theaters starring Kangna Ranuat, Piyush Mishra, Vir Das and Zakir Hussain, which is directed by Sai Kabir. If you check the nature of the movie, it can be called as a Drama. This can be called as a quirky twist of fortune wherein the outlandish outlaw from Chambal is seen falling in love with the winnable actor. Now, will she would be able to surrender her sensational love would be the thing to find in this movie. Well, as you watch this movie, you are ought to get two bullets striking you, one goes in your heart straight while the other over your gut. Such can be called as the firepower of a single crackerjack of a lady, who is smarter than the metallic conical bras, curses like any true bred of Chambal Ki Rani and even is seen firing loads of Barood over the bistarathan, which can help her toy boy can deal. read more at http://justbollywood.in

  12. The first half of the movie was so unevenly baked that u get your head soaring... Although the second half is much better but till that time u r so exhausted that u loose all your interest and stigma..
Director Sai Kabir must be thinking of another Gangs of Wasseypur, but failed tarribly.
Overall 2 star affair.. Not recommended...
