The 1983 World Cup win is immortalised on celluloid with #83TheFilm… Decent first half, excellent second, superb finale… #Ranveer Singh delivers a sparkling performance… A winner — on pitch, on screen too. Those who witnessed the World Cup victory in 1983 would be glad to relive the experience, while those who didn’t, will get a chance to witness how things unfolded during one of the greatest episodes of Indian sports history… WATCH IT!

83 also works because the film is suffused with nostalgia. The big landline telephones and those long-distance calls, which invariably ended with people at both ends shouting ‘hello, hello’ because the connection would be lost; the fleeting glimpse of a Salma Sultan look-alike on Doordarshan; the big hair-dos. The film harks back to a gentler, simpler time and exhorts us to leap higher and try harder. These men inspire us to dare greatly. But the film ends on such a note of euphoria that the longueurs are forgiven. At one point, Kapil Dev tells his team: Har match mein aukaad se zyada khelna hoga. All these decades later, that’s still sound life advice.

On the whole, 83 is a blockbuster of epic proportions. Cricket lovers will, of course, go ga ga over the film, but even those who are not fans of cricket will adore the film for the entertainment it offers. Some films are made to write history. 83 is one such film! It will be remembered for years to come.

Ranveer Singh disappears into his Kapil Dev even as each of Kapil’s Devils is given their own moment in this faithful recreation of India’s 1983 World Cup win.

Yes, it does play on the nationalism rhetoric, way more than was required. The film’s own spirit would have driven home the point that the rhetoric scenes were trying to make. ‘83’ had scope for some good music which could have added better tempo to the narrative. But that said, with this, Kabir Khan does set a high benchmark for himself, once again.

All said and done, Ranveer Singh & Kabir Khan have done it! They’ve taken us back to a time in which history was written, helping us to feel even a fraction of what every cricket lover must’ve felt on the evening of 25th June 1983.

As a cinematic experience, 83 will make you very emotional. It is a film that goes beyond making your heart swell with pride as real-life images and scenes from the actual match flash in front of you. Don’t forget to wear your mask to the theatres but a word of advice – throw in a bunch of tissues. The tears of joy and pride flow incessantly in what can be easily termed as one of the finest films of the year. You don’t want to miss this one!

Kabir Khan knows how to make political statements without sermonising. The jubilation in this film is infectious, the patriotism poignant because it is such a contrast to the ongoing real-world public discourse about love for the country. 83, then, mirrors the Indian team’s 1983 World Cup outing – its flaws notwithstanding, a winning performance.
