Director Sudhir Mishra and writers Bhavesh Mandalia, Abhijeet Khuman, Nikhil Nair and Niren Bhatt, reduce the sting of the book. The result is a drama with a less curdled view of humanity. The film is designed to make you question but not to make you uncomfortable. It veers between sharp and sagging but ultimately Nawazuddin Siddiqui and the terrific child actor Aakshath Das steer the story to a satisfying close. In Serious Men, Sudhir finds the sweet spot between intricacy, starkness and emotion. I think there is material here for a sequel in which Ayyan Mani runs the world. I have no doubt that he can.

This is Mishra back in form. He is one of the few Hindi film directors who understands politics, and at his best, has been able to spin winning yarns around the politics of the day (Hazaaron Khwahishein Aisi). His 1992 Dharavi, also set in the slums, and an automatic comparison, was more about a man eking out an existence. Serious Men allows its slum-dweller the new-age quality of ambition, and gives him the wiles to see that if the goodies we take for granted are not his, then a snatch-grab is the only way out. Ayyan Mani is the real serious man of his tale.

It’s rudimentary yet deep, simple yet penetrating, serious yet funny. No wonder, they have called it Serious Men. These are seriously funny men or funnily serious men. One of the finest films of the year. Don’t even think of giving it a skip.

Serious Men is a portrait of a minefield of a society delivered with a lightness of touch that enhances its acuity. More than just watchable, the film offers the audience much to mull over.

Regardless of its unromantic conclusions, Serious Men never feels as dark as it really is or Manu Joseph intended it to be thanks to its film-maker’s humane outlook. At the end of the day, there’s always a little more to people than their politics. In what is one of the sharpest movies of his career, Sudhir Mishra shows you needs to be more sensitive than serious to recognise that.

‘Serious Men’ that streams Netflix on October 2, addresses the caste system prevalent in our society subtly yet evidently and is able to capture the inner frustration of a man who knows he is a ‘small molecule in the world’, all too well. One word for this Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer — sharp.

All said and done, Serious Men is serious at its core, but its treatment allows the story to be entertaining and intriguing at the similar time. If you can overcome some abusive dialogues and a couple of mild sex scenes, watch this one with your family.
