With Love Aaj Kal starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, which is a sort-of remake of his own film of the same name from eleven years ago, Imtiaz Ali has done what few believed was even possible – he’s made a love story that might be more indulgent, contrived, and incoherent than When Harry Met Sejal. And that’s saying something. There is no polite way to say this – Love Aaj Kal is pretty awful and dreadfully boring. It’s also overlong and hammy. The pursuit of romantic fulfilment has seldom felt so banal. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five.

Love Aaj Kal is a confounding film about confused people. Perhaps writer-director Imtiaz Ali was attempting to have the storytelling reflect the emotions of his leads. The result is an unholy mess.I go into every Imtiaz movie ready to be seduced by this argument and hoping that he will transport us to that sweet spot – dil aur duniya ke beech. Sadly, Love Aaj Kal misses the mark by a mile.

Imtiaz Ali’s direction is of the kind which, like his script, would appeal only to a section of the youth and class audiences. Like his script, his narration also serves to often confuse the audience. On the whole, Love Aaj Kal 2020 is a major disappointment. It will not be able to keep the large mass base of audience happy. A section of the youth and class audiences (who frequent high-end multiplexes) in the big cities will like the film but the masses, families, and audience of single-screen cinemas, smaller centres and lesser multiplexes will not be impressed by the film at all.

Love Aaj Kal is an audacious, if flawed, ode to love as a quest for happiness and self-realization that often triggers conflicting emotions and unsettling impulses but never fails to enrich the soul. There is a touch of old-world magic to the film although the emphasis is squarely on a modern couple learning from a pair from a generation ago how to heal themselves. If you get it, you’ll absolutely love Love Aaj Kal. If you don’t, it might all feel like a meandering mess.

If you had apprehensions about a brand new film being called by an old name, made by the same director, you were right. If you thought that despite this apparent lack of imagination, this 2.0 ‘Love Aaj Kal’ would fly, you were wrong. Imtiaz Ali’s latest version of romance in this-day-and-that age, is nothing but an incoherent mess.

Writer-director Imtiaz Ali narrates the 2020 ‘Love Aaj Kal’ in the same format as his hugely successful directorial in 2009 by the same name. However, the love stories are fresh with different set of conflicts that vary with time. Ali makes it relevant by showing us the contrast between traditional small town-love that was simple yet difficult versus the contemporary urban love that is complex and messed-up. It creates some emotional moments along the way, but doesn’t quite leave you spellbound.

Love Aaj Kal serves as a superficial testimony to modern day romance – if this is what modern love looks and feels like, no thanks, we want none of it. The movie is rated 15-plus in the UAE and many of the intimate scenes between the lead couple have been chopped off leading to a slightly disjointed screenplay.

Two handsome couples — Zoey and Veer (Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan) and Raghu and Leena (younger version played by Aaryan, older version played by Randeep Hooda and newcomer Arjushi Sharma) — relay their tales of love and heartbreak in all their messy, complicated glory. But they are not fabulous enough on their own or as a collective, dysfunctional unit for us to cheer for them or their happy endings.

Why was this movie made? What kind of relationship gyaan were you trying to give? What are the exact problems that the protagonists face? Why recreate the exact same template of the previous Love Aaj Kal (Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone), when you have nothing new to add? Questions, questions…but the answers… ah well, forget it!

On the whole, LOVE AAJ KAL is strictly for the youth and romantic at heart. At the box office, it will start on a positive note on the account of its novel cast and the festive (Valentine’s Day) period. The business will be decent across urban multiplexes while business at single screens may remain average.
