There are two things you should know about Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, although if you’ve watched director Luv Ranjan’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama and its sequel it should come as no surprise whatsoever. The first is that women are always the enemy. They’re scheming, ball-busting shrews. The second is that despite the sexism, the objectionable stereotyping, and the frequent misogyny, the film is unquestionably funny. Now what to do!Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has a strange kind of earnestness in its juvenile ambitions. I was uncomfortable with its decidedly women-bashing stand, but I enjoyed the film’s silly, relentless humor. I’m going with three out of five.

This ROMANCE vs BROMANCE is an absolute joyride… Luv Ranjan gets it right yet again, after #PyaarKaPunchnama and #PyaarKaPunchnama2… #SKTKSLead actors are the lifeline of #SonuKeTituKiSweety… Kartik Aryan is fantastic, the scene-stealer… Nushrat Bharucha is in terrific form… Sunny Singh nails it with a convincing act… Ishita Raj and Alok Nath are delightful… Music is a big plus point… GO FOR IT. #SKTKS

Misogyny runs deep through the film. Ranjan has had great success chronicling men struggling with women and relationships. You will recall the 5-minute rant against women in the first Pyar Ka Punchnama. The monologue included lines like, “A happy woman is a myth” and “Any discussion with a woman is an argument.” Here he goes a step further – the entire film is about a friend trying to break up his best friend’s marriage because he believes that the woman his friend is marrying is a fraud. Sonu has no proof that Sweety is problematic. He says, it’s just a feeling. She is, in his words, too good to be true.

Luv Ranjan’s direction is splendid. He has made the film a racy entertainer which is what it should’ve been. On the whole, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is a box-office hit and will keep the audience smiling and laughing, and the distributors, producers and exhibitors laughing all the way to the bank.

If you are familiar with Luv Ranjan’s brand of youthful romcoms, you must know that they often represent young lovelorn men, who find themselves dancing to the tunes of manipulative girlfriends. Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety (SKTKS) too revolves around a hapless victim of calculative ‘affairs’ and if you liked the Pyaar Ka Punchnama movies, you are bound to enjoy this one.Despite the odds, this bromance vs romance comedy works as an exciting guessing game to predict who’ll end up as the third wheel — best friend or girlfriend? This means war.

The girlfriend outwitting the best friend and vice versa trope too gets tired after a while. Just like the gag with the niggling domestic help. Pedestrian wit works best around actors who don’t just go with the flow, but shape it to suit their comical timing. That’s the difference between performers and parrots. But the underwhelming leads of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety don’t seem to know the difference at all.

So yes, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety provides some laughs, some of which escape involuntarily. But it also leaves you wondering. Can Ranjan grow up his callow characters? Of course, he can, because he has the smarts (remember Pyar Ka Punchnama?). Does he really want to? I’m not sure. Sharp comedy of the sexes is the hard stuff. Cheap laughs are easy.

On the whole, SONU KE TITU KI SWEETY entertains as well as packs a solid punch. It is witty and sharp both in terms of drama and execution. At the box office, it will be lapped up by its target audience – the youth – who will take an instant liking towards the film. Strongly recommended.

What works wonderfully is the collective performance of the actors in this well-cast film. While the seasoned actor Alok Nath endears as the cheeky patriarch, the younger set of actors win you over with their collective charm. While the comedy moves at a brisk pace, I wish the women weren’t painted as vixens. There’s no teeth in Sweety’s meanness towards the end. But don’t let that dissuade you from enjoying a comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously. If you are in the mood for a spirited bromance, then be sure to watch this one.
