The conflict between the hero and the villain seems like a safe enough plot for a potboiler or a spy film; however, Murugadoss’ writing doesn’t manage to give you the chills or thrills the promos promised to. Telugu audience might be particularly disappointed as this bilingual does not live up to Mahesh’s ‘Superstar’ image. To cut a long story short, Spyder is too thanda for a Dasara release.

While the entire movie is told in an action thriller mode, hero gives a strong message in the end which is more like comedy than a serious message. The climax here is one of the worst endings made in recent times. All in all, “Spyder” has interesting first half, and some neatly packed episodes but it lets down totally as it is neither the best movie from Murugadoss, nor a good one for Mahesh Babu. Other than bits and pieces, it lacks appealing factor.

When you have a superstar like Mahesh and an alleged budget of 120 crores, one expects a film that matches the grandeur in terms of storytelling and subject. Spyder turned out to be a vigilante film with less scope for heroism. Hence there is a clear mismatch between expectations and deliverable. If you go as a normal movielover who were to watch a Murugadoss Telugu dubbed version of a Tamil hit film, you will not complain but for an ineffective pre-climax and climax.

Shot with more kineticism than gloss by Santosh Sivan, Spyder’s masala-filled mayhem takes great pride in showing off its scale across VFX-aided rollercoasters duels, rolling giant boulders and buildings collapsing into rubble that leads to a big-scale, bloated climax. But it’s the classic face-offs on who-has-the-last-word and in the idiosyncratic display of imagination that Spyder gains ground.

The confrontation between two characters is the highlight of the narration. Both are equally smart. But, when it comes to physical strength, Shiva has got one-up on Sudalai. If Sudalai lands a jab, Shiva comes back at him with a hook. While Sudalai thinks he has got his opponent against the ropes, Shiva manages to fight his way off the ropes. The back and forth exchange between the two prime characters is well written and smartly executed with convincing performances. More importantly, the logic in the narration is very much intact.

Spyder is a thriller and has a strong role etched out for the villain, which obviously means a greater challenge for the hero. After a decent introduction in the first half, the graph for the hero doesn’t rise, the intensity dips and the narration falls flat. Mahesh is good, but after a point, we wonder what he is doing here. It is S J Suryah as Bhairava who walks away with all the attention.
