Heartless Hindi  Movie Review

There’s no denying that Shekhar borrows from AWAKE, but he gives an altogether different spin to this genre. Let it be known that HEARTLESS is not the usual run of the mill love story, nor can you guess what’s in store as the plot thickens. At least those who aren’t aware of AWAKE wouldn’t be in the know of the basic premise of the film. On the whole, HEARTLESS is made with a lot of heart, but appears partly engaging. Shekhar Suman, the director, knows his job, but the writing lets him down. However, what you carry home is the wonderful performance by Adhyayan.

The film, nicely adapted and understated deals with the disturbingly real phenomenon of anesthetic awareness in which surgery patients, though paralyzed are conscious of everything they are experiencing including pain. It’s an absorbing thriller. And one doffs one’s hat to Shekhar for handling this difficult subject with such finesse. Though lavishly mounted, the first half is routine with emphasis on the rich-boy-meets-poor-girl angle. Post intermission, the real plot is unravelled. Though the twists in the tale rest largely on a dry medical fact, the film becomes a thrilling roller-coaster ride with terrific punches.

Shekhar Suman’s directorial debut Heartless, starring his son Adhyayan Suman, would have been the butt of his own jokes in the immensely popular ‘Movers and Shakers’ back in the day. Eventually, ‘Heartless’ lacks any sort of pulse and does much harm to Suman’s television legacy, something that he must conserve wholeheartedly. For our sake.

If you woke up late/were caught in traffic/didn’t get bail in time and happened to miss the first half of the film, don’t worry. Pre-interval, Heartless is a hybrid of an advertisement for Dubai tourism and a sicker version of a Katy Perry music video. The real story begins only after the interval. However, if you slept in/don’t actually own a car/are still stuck in jail, there’s still no need to worry at all. You’re not missing anything. Despite being well shot and fairly well edited, this film has nothing of value to offer. Heartless is, in fact, without a soul.

The second half is a hoot. I’m sure it was not intended to be. If a real-life surgeon actually sees what happens in this make-believe operation theatre, I’m convinced he’d laugh his head off. He’s fibbing, he’s fibbing, exclaims Dr Trehan ( Puri, who seems to have wandered into the film wondering what he’s doing there), and you see a bunch of masked fellows rushing to resuscitate our hero, who is roaming around in his hospital gown gasping for breath. There’s a plot, and it needs unraveling. They should have just let it be.

Since it’s a medical drama the way Shekhar has put together the story seems unconvincing. Also, a lot of time is spent on the love story and the song and dance routine taking away the seriousness of the second half. Adhyayan’s character who the film revolves around needed more substance.A wasted opportunity to make something different than the usual, Heartless doesn’t have its heart in the right place!

If you want to watch a great film that Shekhar Suman was attempting on , watch Awake but definitely stay miles away from this convoluted, terrible affair. Shekhar Suman is clearly cut out for wit but in his maiden venture the director shows no flair of the intelligence he is known for. Watching the film was a punishment of sorts.
