Mr Joe B Carvalho Movie Review

You might consider knocking back a few before heading out to watch Mr Joe B Carvalho, the sort of misguided madcap comedy that can only be endured in a state of semi-intoxication. I’m going with one out of five for Mr Joe B Carvalho. At the point when Arshad got into a punching match with an unborn baby in its mother’s tummy, I decided nothing can save this movie.

On the whole, MR JOE B. CARVALHO has few moments that stay with you, but a weak second half plays the spoilsport.MR JOE B. CARVALHO attempts to spoof just about everything available on platter, but the sad part is that the screenplay is not as creative as its title. The film depends largely on the [super] comic timing of Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaaferi, while a few one-liners and sequences are genuinely funny as well, but these are mere exceptions.

Ideally, this detective comic-thriller that spoofs mainstream Hindi cinema in a small degree attempts to be somewhat like Hollywood’s Naked Gun series. And it should have made for a goofy film. But after a promising start, Joe B… fails It’s a pity that the writer and director didn’t pay more attention. Had the film been as honourable as their intentions seemed (of making a clean comedy that is neither slapstick nor adult), this genre may have actually got a fillip.

The pun on Joe B Carvalho’s name is a long-running ‘joke’ — one of the many instruments of torment that the film employs. Joe B Carvalho is that annoying friend who won’t stop forcing those unbearable PJs on you as you try to laugh politely while one eye seeks an emergency exit. At the end of the film, you slip off your seat, onto your knees and beg Mr Joe B Carvalho — please ab maar daalo.

Mr Joe B Carvalho, directed by first-timer Samir Tewari, is a comedy of terrors in which anything goes. It is utterly unfunny and riddled with mindless gags that drag beyond acceptable limits. But the Mr Joe B Carvalho screenplay is such a pathetic mess that there is little that he can do to prevent the film from sinking into a morass of its own making. Be warned. Jo bhi karlo but stay well clear of Mr Joe B Carvalho if you value your money – and sanity. This film deserves only half a star for that is all that it offers – Arshad Warsi at half tilt.

A comedy film comprises a funny script and good dialogues. ‘Mr Joe B Carvalho’ sadly lacks both. Resultantly, the two hours spent watching the movie turn out to be pure torture. Watch this movie only if for you anything passes in the name of ‘comedy’. The film deserves the one star it got for the bravery the makers of this film showed while making it.

If at all the movie is tolerable, even though it gets boring in the second half, it is thanks to Arshad Warsi’s comic timing. Just as we have ‘keep your brains behind’ action/thriller flicks with super stars, this one too falls in that category, but with a difference. At least, you don’t leave the theatre fuming!

Funny much? Sadly, not at all. Actually I’m not sure of anything post watching `Mr Joe B. Carvalho’ other than wonder just how I sat through all of it. Mr Warsi, `hum se yeh kyon karvaya’?

The screenplay suffers lack of imagination. The sub plots, situations and dialogues leave very little scope for any originality. Almost everything you watch in the film has been attempted elsewhere. With very little entertainment offered at the price of its ticket, Mr Joe B Carvalho is a feeble attempt that fails to provide any comic relief.

2014 couldn’t have seen a worse beginning than Samir Tewari’s disastrous comedy film. It is irritatingly silly and in my dictionary ‘foolish’ is not funny. There is a callous dearth of intelligence in the film and it definitely qualifies as a must never watch venture.

  1. Playing a detective, when Arshad Warsi comes to take the brief of a ‘runaway daughter’ case from Shakti Kapoor playing the father, Warsi investigates if he has any clue where his daughter could be. And you really can’t hold yourself bursting into giggles when Shakti Kapoor gives him an absolutely definite & detailed address in reply. This is a good example of black-humour and most importantly, it is one of those few gags that really come out well on screen. I wish other jokes would also have the same luck!

To be pronounced as ‘Mr jo bhi karwa lo’, debutante Samir Tewari’s ‘MR JOE B. CARVALHO’ is rather ‘errors in comedy’ than ‘comedy of errors’. The characters and I mean ‘each & everyone’ credited here acts and reacts like mad cows trying to eat as much grass from the field as they could.

Arshad Warsi plays a detective who’s hired to solve the mystery [???] behind a daughter running away with the cook of the house. In other plot, there is a cold-blooded killer [the less-wasted Javed Jaffery] out on loose to kill another couple responsible for a self-proclaimed don-cum-lover’s heartbreak. Vijayraj plays a green-eyed, envious goon who’s looking for chances to kill his rival Carlos-the killer. Soha Ali Khan is in role of a ‘Lady Dabangg’ cop who misunderstands his ex-boyfriend Warsi as the same contract killer, God knows why often addressed as a terrorist. Himani Shivpuri as the blind mother to Warsi gets trembling around everywhere without much reason. Rest is the series of happenings, mis-happenings and not-happenings.

With a completely immature, faulty and terrible work of writing, neither the film takes itself serious nor the actors. Everyone races against each other to win ‘who’s worst’ title in the performance. Javed Jaffery shows some relief as the master of disguise Carlos. Arshad Warsi was the biggest bet in this and though he never really disappoints you, he should take accountability for choosing such bad film. For the rest, you will find lots of improvisation from actors taking place in many scenes but even that also don’t help any better. Watching actors mumbling just anything before leaving the frame or camera getting zoomed in to a face to get some reaction and after realizing that it’s not gonna happen, ending it with a late-cut is hilarious but only if you are into the tricks & trades of filmmaking.

Dialogues are pathetically pedestrian. So if there is a talk about bad stomach, be ready to hear Soha starting her sentence with ‘I gas’ only to rectifying it soon after with ‘I guess’. The songs are penned down to tickle funny bones but fall flat only for a well-needed break to visit loo or the cafeteria in the theatre premise.

At the end; if you laugh ever in the film, it is not because of the gags but the situations that are not funny at all. Filmmaking is a serious business and people who think they can have fun with it in trying to make it funnier, should need to learn-unlearn few basics. Cinema lovers can consider it a strictly ‘No-No’ and a case-history in the ‘worsts’ section of Bollywood. Come on 2014, don’t dishearten us! Give us something really good soon! [0.5/5]
