So “Saand Ki Aankh” is a feel-good, inspiring story of two women who challenged patriarchy by picking up the ultimate symbol of masculinity. You come away from “Saand Ki Aankh”, your spirit considerably elevated. It’s a shrewd little film that knows exactly what buttons to push to win your heart. I’m going with three out of five.

On the whole, Saand Ki Aankh is an inspirational film about women empowerment. It has fairly good entertaining and engaging moments but if, despite that, it is not able to hit bull’s eye, it will be because of its faulty release date (opposite two more films) as also because it lacks exhilarating scenes. It will win critical acclaim, and its collections will pick up by word of mouth but it will suffer greatly at the ticket windows because of an inappropriate release date.

Why would a Bollywood film, especially one which declares itself pro-women, do this kind of disservice to its cause? Are there no women closer to the age of the Tomar ladies? How about the pool of Shabana Azmi, Neena Gupta, Deepti Naval, Seema Bhargava, Ratna Pathak Shah? You can just see them inhabiting and lifting these parts.

While there is no doubt that this is an inspirational tale, it meanders a bit too long in the first half of the film, before finding stable ground. A tighter edit would have made it a far more gripping watch. The narrative also stumbles a bit when the game of hide-and-seek between the two daadis and their family starts getting a tad repetitive. Luckily, the director escapes that trap soon and sets things in motion when the two major face-offs in the film unfold. The characterisation seems unidimensional; there are exactly four good men, and no mean women in this tale. The film drives home the point of women empowerment, celebrates the bonhomie among women wholeheartedly, and attempts at every point to hit the bull’s eye.

Saand Ki Aankh is a pleasant family watch for the Diwali weekend. Take your main women along. If possible, add your khadoos taus and uncles of your family to that list, to show them the mirror in an indirect way.

Saand Ki Aankh has all the pizzazz that its name, which is explained within the film, suggests it will. Even in its most comical moments, it is deeply moving because the women are fighting for rights that no human being should ever have to demand: the right to dream, the right to make their own decisions, the right to just have a good time. Watching it is to set off on an emotional rollercoaster of reactions, running the gamut from delirious joy at the heroines’ achievements to anger on their behalf, fear, laughter, tears and whoops of celebration.

Barring a slip here and a blip there, Saand Ki Aankh is never less than credible while being true to the impulse to craft an entertaining real-life chronicle. More than your money’s worth, it is a film that delivers food for thought and emotional stimulation in one go.

What sets apart Saand Ki Aankh is that director Tushar Hiranandani frames the issues of patriarchy and gender discrimination within the structure of a family drama which is heart-wrenching and triumphant in equal measure.
