Haider Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
A few such hiccups aside, Haider is an elegant, thrilling film that casts a brave, unflinching eye on the Kashmir struggle. In deviating from the original ending of Hamlet, it also makes a necessary point about the cyclical nature of revenge and violence. Its deliberate pacing may not work for all, but this is a solid, well-acted movie that deserves your time. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five. To see or not to see? Do you really have to ask?

There is much in Haider that deserves a standing ovation The result is a film that is problematic and far too long, but also thrillingly ambitious and powerful. But I can guarantee that you will emerge from Haider shell-shocked. And when was the last time a Hindi film did that to you?

HAIDER is interesting only to a certain extent. The film, that starts off on a promising note in the first half slowly losses its fizz as the story progresses. On the whole, HAIDER is targeted more at niche multiplex audience and not for the masses, which may work against the film. Add to that, the lesser number of screens available for the film and its release alongside the gigantic competitor film BANG BANG may just see the film struggling at the Box-Office.

Haider, directed, co-produced and co-scripted by Mr Bhardwaj, is about making sense of chaos, finding sanity in insanity, and sympathising with the sinners. Shot amid the breath-taking beauty of the valley, Haider glorifies gore. It makes you justify death and it leaves you speechless. Missing it will not be the best decision of your life.

Haider is a brilliant adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet where a new character - Kashmir - joins the drama's kings and queens.Sometimes, Haider wanders - elaborate background music frames some scenes too richly while the second half could've been tighter. But these are tiny ripples on this filmi lake. For the most, Haider is superb, witty, violent, tragic - magic. To see or not to see is no dilemma here. Don't miss Haider - he's got chutzpah like none other.

This is not a simple adaptation, this takes not a simplistic stance; Haider is a remarkable achievement and one of the most powerful political films we've ever made, a bonafide masterpiece that throbs with intensity and purpose. The result is a knockout, a film that makes you smell corpses, that makes you shudder with melancholia, and a film that points accusing fingers. A film that doesn't flinch. Is Haider Vishal Bhardwaj's best film?

Vishal Bharadwaj’s third Shakespearean adaptation,` Haider’ urf `Hamlet’ is a spectacular looking film, each little detail of set and setting perfect. Where it falters is in telling the story it sets out to : the result is a gorgeous but choppy film that you cannot take your eyes off for fear of losing another exquisite piece of detailing; it is also one that fails to fully keep you with it.

Vishal had all the ingredients right but is terribly let down by a confused and meandering screenplay. I wanted to shout Hara-kiri. He has always made films that the audience has to play catch up with. In Haider he treats us like fools - over narrates and goes into flashback to explain every little point.

While Vishal Bharadwaj brings alive the ecstasy, pain and passion of Hamlet on screen, he also reminds us of the harsh truth in our own backyard, the man-made mayhem in the God-made jannat that is Kashmir. All this done with his classic poetic touch intact. The second half dips a bit before it picks up again with an unforgettable climax. Please watch this film. It has chutzpah  and a lot of soul too.

Haider is rare film that will go down in cinematic history as a bold move that detaches Kashmir from the its usual depictions and dares to lay it bare. Even if you are fluent with Hamlet, there will be alot you can take away from Haider. I guess, this film is the best all those who are associated with it can get.

  2. It is not often easy to make a movie based on Hamlet but hats off to directors like Vishal Bhardwaj, who really left no stone unturned to bring out the movie the best. You may find some dialogues going over your head, as they are in hardcore Urdu, however, the people knowing this language would enjoy the melody of the movie in the real sense. 6. That shagid gapoor is a mashter piece type actor is that no any one makes a doubting, but is why that the visaal bahadwaj treeating this filim also like nearby omkara.......and it makes for a funny sijuation when kasmir is back in the drop but full of unviolence wich is unlike the hurriyat concerfence is stating in the foriegn media. All in the hwhole it is a tight one type of script but little loose in the middle place of the filim but howevdr he cstched up with gulzaar bhai maachis type ending which even soulful and nation loving people will finded to be little far fetched.

Anyway since the story is setted in the medievial timez (almost after stone age) the colors used in the filim is not very honest. But as shakspear is no more available in the market no one Can suit a file except queens of england who anyway not watched any hindi filims.

So I can proudly give 2 out of 10 stars for bhardwaj. Similarly for hard worked gapoor I will give 10 / 10 stsrs.

Just dont keep reads this post. Go spend proper money and then watch it

  25. HAIDER:
A Bollywood rare that tries to speak…emotionally & politically! [3.5/5]

1995, Kashmir. When single screen cinemas like Faraz & Sheila in Srinagar were turned into a full-fledged army camps & detention centers, we at the other side were probably unscathed enjoying those terribly silly love-stories on VHS in our drawing rooms and least bothered about that ‘integral part’ of our country. Calling it ‘integral’ itself is an irony. We normally don’t do that to other states. Are we? Vishal Bhardwaj’s HAIDER is a strong political statement retold and represented covered in the long dark shrouds of Shakespearian emotional saga. It’s depressingly sad, gloomy, violent, nerve-racking and makes you bleed emotionally.

Haider [Played by Shahid Kapoor] returns to his soil after his father goes missing in the bleak times of militancy contaminating the Jhelum waters. The disappearance soon gets linked with the unseen before closeness between his mother [Immeasurably talented Tabu] and his power-hungry uncle [Kay Kay Menon in a well-suited comfortable role]. The hunt for the missing and the haunting ache of losing all his emotional supports lands him into the fiery world of hatred, vengeance and revolt at personal front.

Adopted from ‘Hamlet’ of William Shakespeare, HAIDER suffers from the 'Chutzpah' of Vishal Bhardwaj as a deep and sound filmmaker who ruthlessly puts you through the gloomiest atmospheric tale of Kashmir in the times of brutal political turmoil. This is the time of ambiguity when even the closest to your heart can ask you, “Whose side are you on?”. This is the time when ‘Freedom’ merely has just one connotation to it. The burnt doors, broken windows, unclaimed houses and people holding their identity cards waiting in line for getting searched; Bhardwaj sensitively paints the pain and melancholia in the air. There is a scene actually where a man in a mental shock refuses to enter his own house before being searched by anyone. Created to give you a moment to laugh but really?

In its one of the most comical sequences, Vishal Bhardwaj gives us two of Salman Khan fans who also share the name with Salman and run a VHS parlor. There are also moments and elements snitched from the original work like the slightest intimation of layered mother-son relationship. It does make you uncomfortable at first but the makers deserve a pat on back for such bold baby-step. In other, watch out for the old gravediggers stealing the moment at the climax.

And now the performances! Not many might be familiar with Narendra Jha by name but this man exceeds all expectations as a fine performer in the role of Haider’s father. You will find Kashmir in him in all senses. Tabu as an unsettling soul seeking serenity is a mesmerizing presence on screen. She makes us miss her more in films. Kay Kay Menon is comfortably in his zone. Somehow, this is a role we have seen him wearing like a skin. Shraddha Kapoor doesn’t leave any scope to complain. Irrfan Khan in a special appearance brings a good amount of joy and a flare of surprise.

And then there is Shahid Kapoor! Where in the first part he hardly shows anything unforeseen and mostly repeats himself, in the second half he completely blows you off with a brilliantly acted monologue piece and constantly reinventing his acting skills!

Despite all this, there is of course a muddled theatrical concluding part, bearably lengthy duration of nearly 3 hours and harshly done back and forth narrative to offer a bumpy ride and a sense of dissatisfaction but the melancholic shades in the characters and in the character of Kashmir both painted beautifully by some of the most sincere and serious performances make HAIDER an experience worth putting your time and money in. A bollywood film trying to speak is rare and should get a warm welcome! (3.5/5)

  48. Well known for offbeat films, Vishal Bharadwaj is one of the most established directors of hindi cinema. The man left the world drooling with films like ‘Omakara’, ‘Maqbool’ and ‘The Blue Umbrella’. Not only this, the director has also gained international recognition with several international film festival awards. No matter, your expectations already increase with each and every film of his.
An adaptation to Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, ‘Haider’ is Vishal Bharadwaj’s latest offering to you.

Haider (Shahid Kapoor) returns home, from Aligarh, on being told that his father has been picked up by army and gone missing. As soon as he reaches home, he also finds out that his mother Ghazala (Tabu) has moved to his uncle Khurram’s (Kay Kay Menon) house. Haider, obviously, does not approve of this because he still believes that his father is alive somewhere. Haider begins to search his father in almost every possible military and detention camp.
One fine day, Haider is visited by a stranger named Roohdaar (Irrfan Khan) who tells him about his father and asks him to take revenge of his death from Khurram. What happens next?

Haider depicts the story of Kashmir, its people and their survival. The film not only captures the scenic beauty of Kashmir but also the terror and fear of the people living there. A perfect irony on what we call ‘India’s most beautiful place’.
Nevertheless, Haider has a long running time of 165 minutes which remains the only cause of concern. The first half is slow and the film only picks up 10 minutes before the interval.

Haider is supported by some very strong performances. Shahid Kapoor has delivered his best performance till date. He would sure leave you mesmerized. Tabu is outstanding and equally compliments Shahid. Wow, it’s good to see her after so long. Kay Kay Menon is terrific. Irrfan Khan, though in a cameo, is excellent. Shraddha Kapoor is okay.

If you wish to watch some meaningful cinema, Haider is for you. Go watch it now! You don’t get to see such films in Bollywood very often.
