Son Of Sardaar Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Review by: Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)
Judged even by the yardstick of a 'leave-your-brains-behind' entertainer, Son of Sardaar falls considerably short, particularly because it wants to be too many things all at once. Dhir mines the premise for its comic potential, offering us some moments of inspired lunacy. But this is equally an action film, and the cartoonish set pieces fail to impress because they rely too heavily on tacky special effects. I'm going with a generous two out of five for director Ashwni Dhir's Son of Sardaar. Even if you're a fan of those loud 80s-style entertainers, this one demands a lot out of you.

SON OF SARDAAR may give you the feeling of deje vu, but let's face it, it needs tremendous skills to pen a screenplay that never lets you lose focus. Dhir and screenwriter Robin Bhatt ensure that they throw every trick in the book to serve a no-holds-barred entertainer, with 70 mm herogiri at its best, to the amusement-seeking moviegoer. That's one of the prime reasons why SON OF SARDAAR hits the right notes. On the whole, SON OF SARDAAR is for lovers of hardcore masala movies. If you liked WANTED, DABANGG and ROWDY RATHORE, chances are you will relish SON OF SARDAAR as well. The North Indian audiences in particular and those residing abroad will be simply delighted by this chatpata, masaledaar fare. A wholesome entertainer in the festive period. Go, have a blast!

Ajay Devgn convincingly plays son-of-the-soil with power, playfulness and colorful pagdis in every scene. He switches from comedy, action and romance flippantly, impressing with funny lines, gimmicks atop a ghodi (Jassi again) and tons of PJJs (poor-Punju-jokes). . This is a mass-entertainer, strung together with a series of Santa-Banta jokes, spiked solidly with macho sardaarisms. Like Jassi says, “Kabhi toh hasliya karo”, this one makes you laugh – in parts!

Son of Sardaar is exhausting, painfully loud and way too long, with too few laughs. These aren't so much films as series of running gags, interspersed with action sequences, instantly forgettable songs and nonsensical dialogue. The idea, I think, is to be entertained without straining your brain. I'm all for it, as long as there is significant entertainment. There was none here. Son of Sardaar made me miss Rohit Shetty, the reigning king of this type of cinema. That says it all.

Son of Sardaar is the remake of a Telugu film Maryada Ramanna by S.S. Rajamouli but is a lot different from it too. Apart from that it takes a lot of inspiration Rohit Shetty's popular films starring Ajay Devgn. But this film lacks the punch that Shetty manages each time. I am sure it's tough to shoot scenes with human beings and cars flying and director Ashvini Dhir gets all that right but what's tougher is to club all the larger than life heroism with a good script which Dhir just doesn't get. Son of Sardaar has a lot for the masses but it lacks a good story. With all the other ingredients in place it feels like Son of Sardaar is a good opportunity wasted.

When a movie tries too hard to be funny and the effort shows in every frame, it only ends up being an unintentional joke rather than a genuine laugh riot. Son of Sardaar is one such abomination. Son of Sardaar is a vengeance drama in the garb of a slapstick comedy – a tangled mess that has no way of working its way around the sloppy screenplay.Poppycock in Phagwara: that is what the film should have been named. While the men on the screen defy gravity at will, the narrative defies logic without a care. Looking for genuine fireworks this Diwali? Look elsewhere.

Some sequences are hilarious and evoke a lot of laughter. On the other hand, there are some sequences which appear stretched. Also, at quite a few places, either logic is given the go-by to further the drama in a particular direction or the characters are made to behave in a particular fashion to arrive at the desired conclusion. This comes in the way of the complete enjoyment of the drama by the audience. On the whole, Son Of Sardaar is an entertaining fare and a good festive watch. Its performance in circuits like U.P., East Punjab, Bihar, Rajasthan, C.P. Berar and C.I. will be better than in the other circuits.

Son of Sardaar’ comes in as an entertaining treat. The multi-starrer action cum rom-com is quite a predictable story, but does unfold its share of subtle surprises. SOS is a typical masala entertainer. It’s got all the formula of an action-packed flick. Ashwani Dhir’s direction is quite commendable, considering the fact that the film follows a traditional formula. The action sequences are a completely fantasy. Even Rajinikanth might seek certain tips to incorporate such hard-to-believe action sequences in his next! Nonetheless, the film is meant to be such. Certain portions are a bit of a drag, but the comic sequences will make up for the monotony. The cast has put up a good show. Overall, SOS is worth a watch, a complete family entertainer!

  19. after reading all reviews. i would like to say one thing that both film jthj and sos will be success story because of diwali.
but may be sos is the better movie then jthj even the jthj was the yash sir's last film. you can see sharuk khan dont have magic like 4,5 year back. and almost all past movies of sharukh was not good like before. about music then my thinking is sos's songs are better then jthj.
    thanks

  25. see guys its always known that a masala movie like SOS will always land up getting mixed reviews. But one thing that most of these movies have provided despite of getting such mixed reviews is ENTERTAINMENT. And if you really expect some extraordinary cinema go watch the art movies of bollywood. They will gratify you. But for those expecting enjoyment film like SOS will be the best bet this festive season as far as I feel. No offences to the fans of YRF-SRK-JTHJ.

    ReplyDelete
  26. as far as comedies are concerned ...SOS is still getting better reviews...ive seen many movies getting trashed by critics more badly than this and collecting 100cr...SOS is a blockbuster surely ...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Watched Jab Tak Hain Jaan ....One time watch... Moral of Movie -- Do not cross roads blindly....watch for vehicles....follow simple traffic rules....SOS may be better than JTHJ

  28. Why the hell ajay dervgan makes such rubbish movies...absolute disaster....we don't want masala movies ..we want class movies...why these directors don't learn from movies like BARFI, KAHAANI, SHANGHAI, ZNMD, DELHI BELLY, ROCK ON etc..

Go watch it if u r a die hard fan of meaningless masala movies...which i am not.

  29. Some peoples are commenting that its a festive season, so people may prefer sos than jthj....let me tell u people that m also a aam admi n i don't want 2 waste money n time by watching some crap masala stuff...which SOS is definitely.

SOS is a movie for B & C centre audiences...not for classy people which i thnk. (as it luks from d promos).

So JTHJ wud b the first choice for me.(bcoz of Yash chopra)

  38. Ajay Devgn starrer SON OF SARDAAR categorically takes huge inspiration from the currently tried & tested Rohit Shetty School of film-making. Gravity defying action sequences, brainless-dimwitted humour, characters that look more of a caricature, full herogiri & dialoguebaazi but where it falls drastically is the confusion in blending all these in right proportion.

Having all the right ingredients in your kitty is one thing and putting them all together adeptly is completely other. So, the result in this case is nowhere close to be as mindlessly thrilling as SINGHAM/WANTED, as inanely funny as GOLMAAL/ BOL BACHCHAN or even as conveniently charming love-story as BODYGUARD.

A paper thin plot lifted from a Telugu hit, where Ajay gets caught literally and accidently in the family of his bloodthirsty enemies and now they are waiting for him outside of the premise of the house, to fulfil their years long vengeance as ethically no guest can be slaughtered within…well, it sounds very promising for a start and creates some genuinely LOL moments too but not for very long. Soon, you are forced to ‘jhelo’ some back to back songs leading to an uncooked love-story and a ‘quite in hurry to meet & greet’ happy ending.

Leave one or two sequences in the first half; and you will feel drained out with nothing to energise you more than leaving the theatre to get some comparatively fresh air. Better stay at home, watch some TV with your kids…that is more refreshing, any day [1.5/5]

  40. Some people are not ready to digest the fact that 'JAB TAK HAI JAAN' has an upper hand as compared to 'SON OF SARDAR' in terms of box office report, excellent reviews, fabulous public response and liking....although the reports have already proven it..... Excuses like Yash Chopra's sudden demise or JTHJ getting more screens will not lessen the effect of Yashji's last classic film....The Diwali effect and comparison with JTHJ may help SOS initially...but in the long run, JTHJ is surely going to set a benchmark in Hindi film Industry and it will be proved that why Yash Chopra was a legendary and most respectable filmmaker that we have ever got...

JTHJ has broken many records in USA, UK, NEWZEALAND, FIJJI, UAE. In INDIA it collected 34cr in 2 days and SOS collected 23cr but in overseas SOS is just below average.

  46. REALLY DISAPPOINTING FROM THIS BOLLYWOOD DIWALI.TRULY BOTH JTHJ & SOS ARE NOT GOOD.I SAW BOTH OF THEM WITH A LOT OF EXPECTATIONS BUT ALL GONE IN VAIN. GREAT LOVE STORIES SHOULD NOT BE BORING & WHERE ARE THE TWISTS & TURNS? MORE THAN 100 BOMBS ARE DIFFUSED .AT LEAST ONE SHOULD HAVE EXPLODE THIS DIWALI.THE CHARM IS ALSO MISSING FROM SOS WITH VERY LESS COMIC SEQUENCES ,NO DEPTH IN STORY & UNNECESSARY SONGS INTERFERE IN BETWEEN.SINCERELY I GOT BORED FROM BOTH............jaan tu bhi bekar wo sardar bhi bekar bas hum bane bewkhoof phir do baar......
