AhanShetty hits the ball out of the park with raw, intense character, super-confident… #TaraSutaria springs a surprise, excels… Decent first half, superb second, stunning twist… #Tadap is indeed watchable. #TadapReview

Director Milan Luthria, armed with a very good script, is in top form. His narrative style is very good. He has also extracted wonderful work from out of his actors. On the whole, Tadap is a hit fare. Its music will soar even more post-release, on the popularity charts.

Ishana in Tadap is the less interesting brother of Kabir Singh. Unlike Kabir, he doesn’t bulldoze a woman into romance – actually, it’s the opposite, she makes the first move. But just like Kabir, he becomes unhinged when the love story splinters. He becomes a testosterone-fueled Devdas, drinking, destroying property, breaking bones, and later, forcibly attempting to make his partner stay with him. Obviously, Ishana hasn’t got the memo on consent. He also runs a movie theatre, which also allows him to project a photo of the woman he has lost on a big screen and then weep abjectly. It’s as dreary as it sounds.

A love story about a man spurned, scorned and left to suffer, Tadap, directed by Milan Luthria and written by Rajat Arora, is strewn with the cliches of the genre. It does not have a single original sleight. But that is the least of the film’s drawbacks. Scratch the prettified surface and what you find is a misogynistic rant masquerading as a movie.

To sum it up, while Tadap unabashedly plays to the gallery with action, music, and well-shot visuals, it would have helped a great deal if its screenplay had created some more room for the actors to drive home a more memorable love story.

By the time the twist — verily, yes, there’s a twist — comes along, it’s too late. By that time, we are buried under the love track, and the best friend (Sumit Gulati) track, and the action track. The two people who make the best of this mothballed ‘Tadap’ are, no, not, the lovebirds, but the two daddies, Mishra and Shukla.
Meanwhile, we are left with such lines as: ‘jawaani mein FD kara lo, budhaape mein kaam ayegi’. Or words to that effect.

On the whole, TADAP rests on some well executed scenes, shocking twist and a fine debut by Ahan Shetty. However, the clichéd and outdated storyline is a major downside of the film. At the box office, it will turn out to be an Average fare.

So when a romantic action drama like Tadap (remake of Telugu hit RX100) comes along and refuses to sugar coat modern day relationships and tackles ‘taboo’ topics like casual sex and infidelity, it tends to hit you in the face. If you haven’t seen the original, the toxic love story can give you a jolt in the second half of the movie. The twists and turns in the plot seem convoluted and in an effort to shine the spotlight amiably on one of the protagonists, the other one’s character unfortunately suffers. But what works for Tadap are earnest performances all around, especially from the lead stars and some great dialogues. If only they could have been more generous with the female character. But every great love story needs a villain, we guess, even if here it comes in the form of an unexpected modern day beauty with a penchant for the high life.
