Ram Prasad ki Tehrvi has passages that are inert. In some scenes, the film’s strains much too hard to tug at our heartstrings. And the script ties up the narrative threads a little too neatly. But the director’s compassionate gaze helps to steer the film through these hurdles.I know the idea of starting new year with a film about death doesn’t seem very appealing but Ram Prasad ki Tehrvi leaves you with hope and a smile. You can see it in theaters. Please do remember to wear a mask.

On the whole, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi is a decently-made film but with very limited and elitist appeal. Therefore, it will not be able to perform well enough at the ticket windows. Low footfalls at cinemas due to fear of the coronavirus will only add to the film’s tale of woes.

On the whole, RAMPRASAD KI TEHRVI has a very interesting story to tell but fails to make the desired impact due to a very weak second half. The film would face a tough time in cinemas and should have ideally released directly on an OTT platform.

We have seen weddings and what goes around them. Here’s a funeral and the tug of war that goes around it. Seema Pahwa in her directorial debut is finding her voice and addressing a substantial conversation. I am in to see her make more of these. The climax does become a little preachy, but the journey is cathartic. This is a Tehrvi you should not be missing.

Maybe Seema should have taken a cue from her actor Konkona, who made an extremely assured and immersive directorial debut in A Death In The Gunj in 2016. To treat a film like a play, despite all the good intentions and conditioning, comes across as a disservice to both the mediums.

Quite often, the film reminds you of similar situations you’ve been in. In some places, I found the acerbic overhang and the good-natured ribbing turning into something edgier, the quality which makes this kind of film stand out, dissolving a little. But then the director sweeps them up together, and we are back to being bystanders, amused and bemused, all at once. Anything can happen, even in the best families: when we leave her, Mrs Ram Prasad is readying for a second innings. Yes, she is carrying forward her ‘sur-loving’, piano-playing husband’s legacy, but she is also doing this on her own, for herself. Not a sorry-for-herself wallowing widow, but a wanting-to-get-on-with-it woman. Hallelujah.

The portraits of a flawed bunch of people yoked to each other by bonds of kinship survive the unwieldy structure and uneven pacing. Curdled blood ties are better than nothing, the movie hints, but it is also always alive to the individual spirit. Some members redeem themselves through simple acts of humanity, while others exit as they entered, grumpy until the last. The family isn’t dysfunctional as it is frighteningly normal.
