This film had potential. It could have redressed a shameful lack. There have been so few full-fledged films on Dalit characters, where the Dalit plays the lead in a clear, unambiguous manner. Done better, it could have been a strong mainstream statement against caste-gender-class discrimination. That poor ‘jhaadu’, which got such bad press when the film’s publicity rolled out a few weeks back, comes on for a flash, never to be seen again: all those militating against propagating stereotypes can rest easy. Chadha is in every frame, and shares some winsome moments with Shukla, but sadly, ‘Madam Chief Minister’ ends up being strictly passable.

Tara, on her part, opens her speeches with “Kaisi lag rahi hoon (How am I looking)?” She herself answers the question in the form of another question delivered with rhetorical force: “Ekdum patakha?” Wish we could agree with her. Neither she nor the film bears any resemblance whatsoever to a firecracker. Madam Chief Minister is a misfire that makes a great deal of noise without making much sense. In that sense, it is like many of our politicians.

The references to the historically disenfranchised community from which Tara hails turns out to be a gimmick. Tara is no better or worse than the people who abuse her caste, invoking that other great cliche of movies of this type: absolute power corrupts absolutely. Thanks, but no thanks.

On the whole, MADAM CHIEF MINISTER boasts of an interesting idea and fine performances by Richa Chadha and Saurabh Shukla. But the loopholes in the script and a disappointing and abrupt finale spoil the show. At the box office, it will struggle to get footfalls as it has been released without any awareness.

Kapoor gives us a busy screenplay with myriad events and challenges in his protagonist’s life and this keeps the narrative flowing with unpredictable plot twists. Sure, some conflicts resolve too conveniently and some twists clearly seem implausible, but the fact that Tara’s character is so strikingly similar to UP’s former CM, we know that in politics, nothing is impossible.Madam Chief Minister gets our vote for being an entertaining political drama, set in the crime-infested corridors of power.

While the film begins with the disclaimer that Tara is a figment of the maker’s imagination and isn’t based on a real political figure, don’t beat yourself if you find yourself wondering if it’s loosely based on a popular real-life leader. Comparisons or no comparisons, the film, directed by Subhash Kapoor, makes for a decent one-time watch.

Lastly, Madam Chief Minister narrates the extraordinary journey of a woman struggling to survive the very manifestations of politics. This one curates the various intricacies in politics and power game. Richa Chadha wins big with her powerful and riveting act. We give Madam Chief Minister 3.5 out of 5 stars.
