On the whole, Shakeela is a well-made biopic but it is too class-appealing to be true. Also, absence of big names in the star cast will tell upon the public patronage. Besides, given the low audience turnout due to the coronavirus fear, the film will not be able to do anything substantial at the box-office. Rather, it will go largely unnoticed.

Despite a subject which is risqué, one still looks for some finesse in the narrative. Not that Shakeela is a B-grade version. But the kind of hardcore entertainment that The Dirty Picture brought in — despite the ample display of cleavage — is missing here.Thankfully, the film is not a complete downer though and can be given a dekko. Shakeela is not unbearable, it’s just not the kind of movie you would recommend to family and friends.

Shakeela is a woman in a man’s world: that is the point that the film wants to make. But it ties itself up in knots in trying to get the point across. Neither Richa Chadha nor Pankaj Tripathi can clean up the dreary mess. The two stars are for the two actors. There’s none for the film.

When the trailer of ‘Shakeela’ dropped recently, many questioned the need for a biopic on a yesteryear soft-porn star. Well, if biopics are stories of popular personalities, then Shakeela’s life definitely deserved a retelling on the big screen.

The tangent where Shakeela meets her high school sweetheart doesn’t help things along. Her rags-to-riches-to-rags story might have worked as a short story, but as a feature film, it falls short of expectations. Barring Chadha’s brief monologue on the hypocrisy about Shakeela and her explicit films being blamed for inciting rape, there’s very little that’s redeeming about this movie. Watch it at your own risk.

To give credit where it’s due, the director ensures that one is not reminded of THE DIRTY PICTURE, despite that both films are on the same lines. And moreover, Silk Smitha, the protagonist of that film, also has a part in SHAKEELA. However, THE DIRTY PICTURE had class even though it was about a sexy siren. SHAKEELA, on the other hand, seems like just another soft porn film which Shakeela did in the prime of her career. Funnily, the film exposes the double standards of the society but the focus on body shots and titillation goes against the very message of the film. Till the first half, the film was still bearable. In the second half, it becomes bizarre. On the whole, SHAKEELA rests on a very good and a shocking story but is executed horribly. It has released in cinemas without any buzz and hence, it would sink without a trace.

Writer-director Indrajit Lankesh chooses a story that has all the trappings of a riveting tale of a powerful protagonist. Desperate times, challenging circumstances, spurts of success and an antagonist, who wields all the clout to defeat any opponent. But the way Lankesh tells Shakeela’s (Richa Chadha) story and derives performances from able stars like Richa Chadha and Pankaj Tripathi is underwhelming, to say the least. Overall, ‘Shakeela’ is an honest attempt that tells a much lesser known story of a fallen star, but more conviction and stronger writing, could have propelled this not-so-dirty picture to newer highs.
