To start with, LAXMII is nowhere close to the original Tamil film [KANCHANA], although one notices modifications in the narrative to cater to the Hindi audience. The problem with LAXMII lies in its weak screenwriting. It hinges on humour for most of its first half, but it doesn’t work. It is only towards the second hour — when Sharad Kelkar makes an entry — that the narrative gathers momentum. That point onwards, right till the finale, it gets better. On the whole, LAXMII lacks the punch. One expected so much more from this film, but it clearly disappoints.

The writing is awful. The message of inclusion is noble but also obviously fraudulent because the film itself contradicts it. There is so much shrieking that it might induce a headache and perhaps the worst sin – the ghost, before it enters Asif’s body, is basically a wig with a fan behind it.Were we really expected to be afraid of flying hair?

On the whole, Laxmii is a disappointing fare. It will not garner positive word of mouth and will, therefore, not be able to make much of a mark. Had it been released in the cinemas, it would have turned out to be a losing fare.

‘Laxmii’ sets out to be a satire against age-old beliefs and biases – we get it! – but the insipidness of the narrative and whatever follows thereon, butchers the lessons it originally desires to impart.
Looking back, the reiterating catchphrase happens to be ‘Maine kuch nahin dekha… yahaan koi nahin hain’ and that’s the vibe we’re latching on to at the moment.

Somewhere deep inside the mess that’s Laxmii, is the kernel of a solid idea: to give us the story of a transgender person, with empathy and sympathy. But this Akshay Kumar-starrer is a two-hour clutch-your-head, can-I-really-be-watching-this nonsense, from beginning to end.

Usually, even in a bad Akshay Kumar movie, you laugh on some puns but this one is totally devoid of any fun. Don’t let your conscience blame you for the rest of your life. Stay away from Laxmii’s antics. We have anyway a pandemic to deal with. Let there be one less problem.

All said and done, Kanchana didn’t need a remake & hence Laxmii isn’t a film anyone asked for. It’s one of those stories which are manageable for the period they released in & shouldn’t be revived. So, reviving Laxmii (read: Kanchana) from the dead wasn’t a good option after all!

A remake of Kanchana, Laxmii hoped to recast the same spell that worked for the 2011 Tamil hit. But while this may trigger some stomach-churning, it’s only because this horror-comedy fails to tickle or terrify. A transgender’s aatma resurfacing in the body of a professional myth-buster to avenge her death and that of her close ones is hardly super or even natural. But what passes for comedy in this trite horcom is painful and pathetic in equal measure.

Laxmii is loud, garish and over the top – just the kind of movie that is needed to shake Bollywood out of its stupor post the pandemic probably. If you enjoy mindless entertainers that pay lip service to a social cause and believe Khiladi Kumar can make no wrong move on the big screen only then go for Laxmii.

The movie — a remake of South Indian hit ‘Kanchana’ — is a messy mishmash of topics such as violent land grabbing, acceptance of interfaith couples and equal rights for transgender people.Their intention to make this horror comedy may have been noble, but the execution is shoddy. The comedy seems stale and the horror portions are filled with predictable jump scares. The songs — inserted at random points — have no particular purpose either and make the movie an arduous watch.
