Malang is far too long at nearly 2 hours and 15 minutes. The unconvincing plot simply doesn’t justify the indulgence. There are some moments that work, but by the end, I was wishing I’d stayed home sleeping on my palang rather than waste my time on Malang. I’m going with two out of five.

Mohit Suri misses the bus this time… #Malang works in patches, but its writing plays spoilsport, fails to grab your attention in entirety… Suspense doesn’t create the desired impact either. #MalangReview

On the whole, Malang is an expensively made stylish film with a good first half but its second half is not up to the mark. It will, therefore, not be able to score at the cinemas. In other words, its business will not be commensurate with its cost.

Here’s a film which is a perfect example of how Bollywood struggles with creating a plot in which every single thread counts. Malang kicks in only after the interval, and then it becomes the film it should have been from the get-go, rapidly deploying damaged cops, emasculated men with curdled sexuality, and bad women on the prowl.

‘A witless thriller so far removed from reality yet so consumed by its own self-seriousness, no amount of slick photography, soaring soundtrack or steady supply of conspiracy can salvage its tepid material,’ notes Sukanya Verma.

A whole lot of time is wasted setting up the story; far less is assigned to unravelling the mystery or providing adequate backstory to all the characters. It feels like misdirection to bring you into the world of Malang through Advait and Sara’s superficial, chemically assisted love story but place greater emphasis on the twisted minds of the cops in charge.

Director Mohit Suri maintains a steady grip on the narrative for most parts. In this film, none of his characters are unidimensional, which makes them interesting. The film begins well with a power-packed action scene, and dives straight into the drama. What it does lack is a tighter edit and dialogues that could elevate the narrative. Though there are two interesting twists in the plot, they aren’t as big a surprise as they should have been, which take away from its thrill quotient. The music proves to be one of its strong points, especially the title track, which stays with you even after you leave the theatre.

Malang is a movie high on style backed with a solid screenplay. The story might seem a bit predictable but there are enough twists and turns to keep you hooked. If you enjoy feasting your eyes on gorgeous people and have a penchant for thrillers then Malang is for you.

All said and done, Malang takes you from one ‘thrill’ to another without taking much time. The fast pace doesn’t miss anything important and manages to narrate an intriguing story without making you look at the watch.

Mohit Suri’s direction is good. There’s a marked improvement from his previous films. There’s a lot of style in his execution that gives the film a fresh and a nice touch. There are lot of characters and subplots but he joins them seamlesslyOn the whole, MALANG is high on style with good performances and thrilling moments but has an average storyline. At the box office, it only has the advantage of a clear one-week window and will therefore do average business.
