Watching Dabangg 3 it’s clear that the law of diminishing returns has caught up with this franchise. There is just no polite way to say this – the new film is an excruciating, exhausting bore. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for Dabangg 3. I left the cinema with a pounding headache and a moment of silence for a promising character that they all but buried. Chulbul Pandey, Rest in Peace.

When you step into Dabangg 3, you know you’re in for a Salman Khan extravaganza. Which would be fine if there was some attempt to tweak the formula or push it into a new direction. But sadly, the makers seem content to deliver another dose of the same. But it’s been 9 years. Even the mighty Chulbul needs an upgrade.

On the whole, Dabangg 3 is the weakest in the Dabangg franchise as it has mediocre content. In this age of content-rich cinema, this one looks like a dated film. It will do below-average business at the box-office. Of course, it will join the Rs. 100-crore club but its entry into the Rs. 200-crore club looks like a distant dream. Although profitability is not an issue (as it has already made profits from sale of satellite, digital and music rights), it will not have a long or eventful run in the cinemas.

The clash between Chulbul Pandey and the bad guy pans out along familiar lines, with Sudeep lending the face-offs a degree of novelty. But that is anything but enough. Dabangg 3 is a familiar one-way street that holds no surprises. It goes nowhere we haven’t been before.

Overall, the film has all the ingredients required for a massy masala entertainer – good action, music, drama and, of course, Salman packing all of this one story. The portions where the actor throws in comedy while doing hardcore action scenes are nicely done. ‘Dabangg 3’ shows Salman in his element – throwing deadly blows at the villains amidst all the smoke, dust and fire, while you can hear chants of Hudd Hudd Dabangg in the background. And those certainly will be a paisa-vasool moments for Salman Khan’s fans.
