Nearly two decades since the big-screen adaptation of the popular TV franchise of the same name, director and writer Elizabeth Banks re-imagines ‘Charlie’s Angels’ for a younger female audience. The tonality gets a major revamp – gone is the sexist approach; this film’s women empowerment message is practically spelt out from the get-go. This also translates into how the characters relate to each other and materializes with girl power kicking butt throughout. The problem is that the action scenes aren’t too inventive or executed with the kind of finesse audiences are now used to. Additionally, the comedic elements don’t work as well as the script intends, making for some awkward moments that fall flat.

Of course, while it never congeals into a satisfying whole, the busy silliness just about pulls ahead of flatness in style and character development. To be perfectly honest I had expected worse, particularly after the terrible Oceans 8, but as a life long film fan had hoped for better – which means Charlie’s Angels is at best or worst a mixed bag of a movie. Of course you’re better off watching the amazing Steve McQueen film Widows, but if you like to see women kicking butt in a less realistic and far more glossy scenarios, this film might just be the one for you.

When the world is at stake, it really doesn’t need to be too complicated so as to ramp up the danger quotient. That’s the strength of this Charlie’s Angels reboot, in which women bond, women lead, women cry, women save, and women load their guns with tranquillisers, to keep the blood and gore limited, even as they save the world tracking down clues.

The only takeaway then circles back to its messaging. There are ample instances where men are egging the Angels on with misogynistic, patriarchal and patronising comments like, “It can be manufactured in pastel colours for ladies” or “If women can, that does not mean they should”. The women’s response, both verbally and physically, counter these agitations. The climax, without saying too much, is also symbolic of ‘we no longer will take it lying down’. But what’s the point of the feminist overtones, when the film itself is unremarkable and highly likely to be consigned to oblivion?
