OneWordReview…HouseFull4: DISAPPOINTING. Tries too hard to make you laugh, but fails miserably… Bad writing, terrible direction, over the top performances… Weakest film in #HouseFull franchise.

On the whole, Housefull 4 is not a very entertaining fare and has ordinary merits. On the one hand is the festival period which will work in its favour and on the other hand is the word of mouth which will work against its interests. Considering the huge investment in the film, it is a disappointment even if it manages to break even.

This film’s obsession with animal excreta is monumental. Housefull 4 is like a pig. It wallows in a shit pit that is so deep that it can only hope to sink into it until there is no way out. The misunderstandings that the rigmarole causes are neither funny nor logical. A film so thin has never been so confusing. With little to offer by way of truly effective slapstick, Housefull 4 falls back on the usual complement of Bollywood cross-references.

Sharad Kelkar, Manoj Pahwa and Nawazuddin Siddiqui also pop up and you can be sure the three actresses don’t contribute in any substantial way to the plot of Housefull 4. Of the ensemble, only Akshay Kumar is given sizeable screen-time and, therefore, makes a modicum of impression. The humour is tired, the gags with Pandey and Lever are hackneyed and the cross-dressing jokes are crass in Housefull 4. If you survive the 140-plus minutes of preceding inanity, the most fun is in the outtakes that play with the end credits.

Not that I thought Housefull 4 to be a serious film on India-China relationship, but never expected it to be this absurd either. Well, as Housefull franchise’s brand ambassador Aakhri Pasta (Chunkey Pandey) says, ‘I am joking.’ This is exactly what the trailer promised it to be.

It takes a special kind of talent to write such utter non-sense for a hundred and forty-five minutes. But Sajid Nadiadwala (producer and story), along with Sara Bodinar (story and screenplay), Tasha Bhambra, Sparsh Khetarpal and Sajid Khan (he’s been credited for screenplay despite everything) have that in abundance. In keeping with the theme of the first three installments – Housefull 1, 2 and 3, Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda and Pooja Hegde-starrer is just that. A hundred and forty-five minutes of non-sense.

Needless to add, don’t go looking for logic in Housefull 4 (but still, how did the blood on Rana Daggubatti’s blue jacket magically disappear in the last scene?). In the last half hour Kriti repeatedly asks, “Yeh sab Kya ho Raha Hain?”. A sentiment that could be echoed by the viewers. On the whole, Housefull 4 ends up as a complete mad caper. Which, if you’re a fan of the Housefull brand of comedy may appeal to you, but if you’re not then proceed with caution.

Housefull 4 is the big Diwali release this year. The fourth instalment of the Housefull franchise, the film is a reincarnation comedy. If you followed the franchise and seen the trailer of Housefull 4, you know what you are in for. The first half of the film is full of predictable jokes, borderline offensive humour and reference to modern pop culture set in the 15th century. Here, Akshay plays the notorious prince Bala and is in his top form.”
