The film is all about its characters, frankly, and the hoops they’re made to jump. In them you’ll likely find traces and memories of your own youth. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Chhichhore; it’s good, harmless fun. I had a big smile plastered on my face throughout, and I think you will too.

Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari is in top form yet again… Has several brilliant moments… Three aces: Emotions, humour, finale… Sushant, Shraddha, Varun excel… Could’ve done with shorter run time.

The one-line pitch for Chhichhore would be Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar meets 3 Idiots meets Student of the Year. Chhichhore encapsulates all of this. Director Nitesh Tiwari creates a cocktail of nostalgia, relationships, family drama and on-the-nose messaging that wobbles precariously but eventually it lands. You walk away wanting to be friends with some of these characters – especially Varun Sharma’s Sexa, who I think deserves his own spin-off film. Chhichhore allows us to revisit that first flush of youth. The film never matches the the inspired grunge vibe of In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones (1989) or the magic of Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. But it’s a satisfying journey back to woh din!

Nitesh Tiwari’s direction is excellent. He has narrated the subject in such an entertaining manner that the film will appeal to audiences of all age groups. His mix of entertainment with a pertinent message to parents is superb. On the whole, Chhichhore is a hit. It has a superb combination of enjoyable entertainment and a wonderful message. It will work its magic on the viewers and turn out to be a big box-office winner.

With a very confused idea about who or what means a ‘Loser’, and a very fixed 3 Idiots template on what means a crowd-pleasing college-life, director-writer Nitesh Tiwari follows up on his super-successful Dangal with a disappointing Chichhore.

Though, the film does seem to have a hangover of movies like 3 Idiots, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and even Student of the Year (minus the gloss and sheen), and the major plots twists do become a bit predictable for a few, it doesn’t disappoint owing to some cleverly written dialogues and one-liners that leave you in splits at regular intervals. It’s interesting to see Tiwari almost touching the periphery of Raju Hirani-esque humour at several junctures. Mad props to Tiwari for capturing the minutest details in depicting the era of 90s — be it the chipped paint on the hostel walls or the bottles of Campa Cola and Gold Spot in the college canteen. Book yourself a date with these Chhichhoras this week and go on a nostalgia trip, while learning a thing or two about life!

On the downside, the first half feels a bit repetitive mainly because of Shishir Sharma’s character. It’s a pity that an actor of his calibre is wasted here. Even though he is there throughout the film but more or less mouths the same dialogue with different variations. Special mention for the climax and the message Nitesh has beautifully delivered. It’s quite brave of him to have that kind of climax in a mainstream entertainer like Chhichhore.Chhichhore is an out and out entertainer. It is fun and heartwarming and will make you laugh and cry at the same time. The movie will definitely take you on a nostalgia trip. Must watch!

‘Chhichhore’ has a relevant message on the inherent attitude towards academic success and failure that will connect with many youngsters and parents of today. It tells you that the journey is far more important than the destination and that losing is as critical a life lesson as winning. The film scores high on many accounts and is certainly worth watching.

Here’s the key difference though: 3 Idiots was all about screwing college; pursuing your dream. Which is all fine, and a point well-taken. Chhichhore, by the looks of it, argues that there is in fact far more to college than exam-scores, and education. It’s actually outside the classroom that you derive most of life’s precious lessons — among fellow travellers, equally insecure, on the same boat — learning to row as you go along, often laughing all the way.
