Artificial is this film’s middle name. The pakadwa shaadi might sound like poetic justice, a fitting reply to the horrors of dowry, but it’s also a crime. Debutant director Prashant Singh decided to juice it for comedy, romance, song and dance. His first instinct is to make the film so colorful that you forget the lawlessness of what you are seeing. And after over two hours of relentless color, we end with the Holi song ‘Khadke Glassy’, which is Punjabi, but cultural rootedness is not the aim here. It’s almost as if Prashant was trying to make you forget that Prakash Jha’s Bihar exists – you know the dark, oppressive, brutal landscape in films like Damul, Gangaajal and Apaharan.

On the whole, Jabariya Jodi is an ordinary fare with some entertaining comedy. It will not be able to do much at the box-office. Of course, a good part of the investment in the film has been recovered from non-theatrical sources, and that’s a major plus point. But the experience for the distributors will not be good.

If only there was a conjurer’s trick that could turn Jabariya Jodi into a coherent whole. But even if any such sleight exists somewhere in the world, the director clearly isn’t aware. Steadfastly puerile, Jabariya Jodi, a film that appears to have been made under duress by a group of people playing blind man’s buff, is a big splotch of utter nonsense.Don’t think twice (thinking won’t take you anywhere anyways if you decide to watch Jabariya Jodi): give it a miss.

Director Prashant Singh’s treatment of an important subject that is begging to be turned into a social satire bursting with local flavour, leaves the film stranded with an identity crisis. Bihar is an underrepresented state in Bollywood cinema. While directors Prakash Jha and Anurag Kashyap have based a lot of their stories there, a social drama that puts it on the map like, say, what Bareilly Ki Barfi or Tanu Weds Manu did for Uttar Pradesh, is what we need next. Jabariya Jodi could have been that film but, alas, it is as flavourless as the ‘litti chokha’ served on pristine white ceramic plates– for sometimes, you like to get your hands dirty.

Groom-kidnapping in Bihar is not a new subject for Bollywood. But Jabariya Jodi is the first to spin a story around it with A list stars. Sidhartha Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra and a host of talented actors come together for this kidnap-‘em-and-marry-‘em-off tale. But from start to finish, there’s isn’t a single shred of conviction on display. The result is a confused, unpleasing, long-drawn mess, which the viewers will ‘jabariya’ have to sit through.

While both the actors put in their best, with Parineeti getting the Bihari accent bang on, the writing is what eventually lets them down. Among the character actors, Javed Jaffrey and Sanjay Mishra are impressive and entertaining. Aparshakti Khurana, as the forever friendzoned lover is decent, but his character seems way too good to be real.Jabariya Jodi starts on a promising note, but loses steam along the way. It tries to throw light on serious issues with lighter moments, but gets tangled in a melodramatic and unrealistic narrative that doesn’t feel all that jabardust.

Set in Bihar, with dialogs like ‘This is Bihar where no one really knows what’s happening’ this wacky romcom starring Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra is an engaging, light watch that offers enough depth to take it seriously at the right points. Armed with great dialogs and a massively talented supporting cast, Jabariya Jodi is going to be a fun weekend watch that you can definitely enjoy with your friends and family.

If only the makers had kept it a pure mindless fun movie, it might have worked. Jabariya Jodi pulls us in too many directions and lacks a cohesive script to keep us engaged. The only saving grace, if it can be called that, is some fabulous dialogues that keep you chuckling even as you wait for the movie to come to an end. Much like this gem, which the hero’s friend sprouts at one point: “Jabariya shaadi is like Chinese goods, you can’t guarantee how long it will last.” We only wish the movie hadn’t lasted so long.
