Andhadhun is a film of many pleasures. And chief among them is the thrill of being constantly surprised. For the better part of the film, you’ll be glued to the screen, reluctant to so much as peek at your phone for fear of missing a crucial moment. It is to Raghavan’s credit that he packages this sinister thriller with such bells and whistles like popular 70s film songs and nods to Anil Dhawan’s own pulp hits. The result is a deliciously twisted film that delivers more fun than any other Hindi movie this year. I’m going with four out of five for Andhadhun. Don’t miss it.

Andhadhun is inspired by a French short film called The Piano Tuner. Inspiration might also have come from ‘Raabta’ in Sriram’s Agent Vinod – you remember that terrific song in which a blind pianist continues to play as Saif and Kareena spray bullets everywhere. Four writers worked on Andhadhun and the second half does feel like a bit of a khichdi. The narrative becomes more convoluted than inventive. And the humour isn’t as sharp – though Zakir Hussain as a casually corrupt doctor irritated by the demands of his family deserves, I think, at least a short film of his own. I’m going with three and a half stars.

As the cat AND mouse of this constantly shifting game undecided between boy who cried wolf and closet Gandhian, Ayushmann Khurrana delivers the most nimble performance of his career. Andhadhun is completely aware of its intelligence and quick wits mercilessly testing our gullibility while Raghavan leads us to its staggering finish with the finesse of a Mikado champion. It’s stunning, comic, grisly, absurd, intense, cold, crazy and must-watch.

Andhadhun is racy, pacy and appropriately pulpy: alert viewers may twig on to the big reveal, but the thrills and chills are right there where they should be. It also dexterously drops some primal issues in our lap: what is right, what, if anything, is wrong? How important is fate? Does everyone deserve a life? Or is it all about just desserts? It’s been a while since I’ve had so much twisty fun at the movies. Pro-tip: do not step out, do not look away, and stay right till the end.

Anyway, the plot of AndhaDhun has so many twists that it would be almost impossible to say too much here without giving away the spoilers. So, suffice it to say, the film packs in enough mystery to keep your stomach in knots, as you rack your brains and ask, ‘What next?’ Sriram sets a pacy thriller tone here from the start. A hunter chasing a partially-blind rabbit through a forest is used as a metaphor for a visually-impaired man who is scampering around blindly.f you have grown up reading mystery/crime novels, don’t miss AndhaDhun. You will simply love it.

Lead actor Ayushmann Khurana has never been better: he hits it right out of the park – and then some. As good as she has ever been, Tabu, too, is astounding as a woman who exudes as much charm as deadly intent. Radhika Apte, playing markedly less tortured than she has been in most of her recent screen outings, is effortlessly pitch-perfect. Supporting cast members Chhaya Kadam, Zakir Hussain, Manav Vij and Ashwini Kalsekar also add their mite to the film.Watch Andhadhun with your ears, eyes and minds open. You will come away with your senses heightened.

Boasting of a brilliant screenplay and masterfully crafted narrative by Raghavan, the story’s audacious characters and constant twists, keep you riveted. Atmospheric and moody, an underlying fear of what lies ahead grips your imagination. Open to various interpretations and unpredictable from beginning to end, AndhaDhun is an engaging thriller that keeps you on your toes and leaves you guessing all the way.

The storyline isn’t contrived and much happens spontaneously. It is riveting and you need to be attentive so that you don’t miss out. Anything can happen with these dubious characters and you don’t want to blame your popcorn for it.’Andhadhun’ is crisply-edited, fast-paced narrative that keeps you on the edge of the seat throughout.
