The narrative in Beyond the Clouds is overwrought. The beats are predictable and the treatment, heavy-handed. Through Majidi’s eyes, the city of Mumbai might seem new but the characters are familiar. The city’s energy and colors are palpable but the story-telling has less sparkle. A. R. Rahman’s soundtrack further underlines every note. Subtlety is not this film’s strong point. Ultimately Beyond the Clouds is a mixed bag. It is likely to be a footnote in Majidi’s rich filmography. But the film is worth seeing as an intriguing experiment. I’m going with three stars.

Slum kids in Mumbai. Trying to hack a life. Battling heavy odds. Drugs. Vice. Prostitution. Loyalty. Betrayal. Love. Majid Majidi’s foray into Indian cinema dusts off these themes, tried-tested-tired with use from such films as Salaam Bombay and Slumdog Millionaire, from Nayakan to Parinda, and everything in between, and creates a been-here-seen-most-of-this re-tread.

Despite excellent symbols and good performances in patches, Beyond The Clouds remains something we have seen and had expected. The uniqueness of the film hardly crosses the crowded bylanes. Majid Majidi’s foreign eyes see what all of them see.

Anil Mehta’s cinematography is equally delightful as he breathes life into Majidi’s vision in some stunning visuals that leave a lasting impression. He presents a different look at some familiar locations in Mumbai while highlighting some new ones. Although being a worthy addition to the skilled technical team, A.R. Rehman’s score falls short of being memorable. Majidi’s subject matter might seem to be repetitive, but the famed director’s take on redemption is fleshed out by strong performances to make ‘Beyond the Clouds’ another notable entry in his filmography.

Beyond the Clouds employs the same narrative construct placed in a different setting and context. It thrives on taking in the sights and sounds of a seedy part of Mumbai where survival is a daily, bruising struggle. This is a world apart established in the opening shot itself. The camera is trained on cars speeding up and down a flyover. A giant hoarding overlooks the elevated span and invites customers to buy into a mobile phone plan. The camera then tilts down and glides into another universe that spreads out underneath the structure. It is here that we first espy the young male protagonist and his friend riding off on a two-wheeler on a dirt-track running between two massive sewage pipes.

Verdict: Beyond the Clouds should be watched to experience how a master storyteller like Majidi can redeem Hindi cinema from drudgery.

BTC is certainly not a masterpiece of Majid Majidi. It is just another regular story of orphan siblings and their problematic lives. Avoid the pace and plot, the film is high on emotions.

What’s Good: Display of complex emotions in a way everyone can connect, superior quality drama, Ishaan Khatter’s memorable debut. What’s Bad: The balance between what’s right and what should be right tumbles in between; also because the good things happening in the film takes an artificial turn at few places but as they say a great dish sometimes requires few tarty ingredients.Loo Break: On a whole, this film will attract people who don’t believe in taking breaks while watching a film.Watch or Not?: Only if you can digest high-voltage dramas; there’s nothing typical-Bollywood in the film.
