American Made is consistently rollicking, although at the heart of it, you cant miss the deep cynicism, the mistrust of the authorities involved. Its what grounds the film, gives it relevance, beneath all of Barrys crazy shenanigans. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five. Just very good fun!

This is a fascinating story told in a fascinating way. Much recommended for those who crave to see Tom Cruise in films beyond the formulaic but entertaining Mission Impossible series, forgettable Jack Reacher installments and that awful Mummy reboot.

American Made is yet another entertaining and memorable movie from the team of Cruise and his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. Its the kind of smart yet breezy and stylish entertainment you see very little of nowadays, and its also the rare film that lets Cruise go unhinged. The last time we saw him do that was in Tropic Thunder.

But underneath this grimy sweatiness, theres a modern tragedy playing out. Everyone from the low-level hitmen, to the Cartel thugs; the CIA, the FBI, the DEA to Pablo Escobar, Barry Seal and the President theyre all chasing the same American dream, and theyre all hungry for the same cheddah. And in the eternal words of the Joker from The Dark Knight (theres no bad time to invoke the Joker, so shh): When the chips are down these civilised people, theyll eat each other.
