The Raid Redemption Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site: CNN IBN

The faint-hearted would be advised to stay far away from The Raid: Redemption, a bone-crunching Indonesian action film that even martial-arts fans will take a little time settling into. This roughly 100-minute film has very little dialogue…and very little of anything other than non-stop brutal fight sequences that are both thrilling and repelling. . You could argue that the film has an almost videogame-like approach to violence, and you’re right. But it’s also fun to watch for exactly the same reasons that videogames are fun.I’m going with three out of five for The Raid: Redemption. It’s fast, it’s gruesome, and it’s a guilty pleasure that’s hard to resist.

Here’s why you might want to skip this one: the dialogues are barely there (at the most 30 lines in all); the cast has never been heard of (and seen) before; the film, at least in India, has been pretty low on publicity. But before you decide to do that, here’s why you — specially the hardcore action buffs — might want to watch this: there’s violence, blood and gore, heads banged against walls, head banged against head, martial-arts unlimited, hard kicking, bone-crushing, neck twisting…. So with all that noise satisfying your quench for action, the lack of dialogues does not really make a difference. A word of caution: Watch only if you belong to that fanboy club of moviegoers who like their cinema with an extra, extra dose of action, action and action.

The Raid: Redemption is a tour de force of choreographed chaos. The film’s awesomeness is only exceeded by its astronomical body count. The Raid is the kind of movie which is short on story. What is high on is, however, is frenzied, frenetic action and abounding martial arts madness. Raid: Redemption is a film to watch unless on-screen blood-letting, lightening-fast displays of marital arts prowess and medium-scale destruction aren’t your ideal diversion. Action fans shouldn’t sit this one out.

“A FILM showcasing ‘the traditional Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat’ and loaded with ‘innovative action to the brim’.”The plot is skeletal, the story is replete with clichés, the acting apart from Uwais and Sahetapy, mediocre at best, the dialogues are minimal and patchy, and the dubbing surprisingly and montonously amateurish. However, this Indonesian film knows where it packs a punch and keeps on landing the blows.
