Salazar’s Revenge is mainly held back by two common problems of the franchise. 1) The adventures lack the element of surprise; they’re more like road-trips with pre-determined pitstops now (a menacing villain, a curse here or there, a witch guiding the pirates, etc). And 2) The absolute irrelevance of Jack Sparrow to the main plot. The plot twists are too bizarre and yet not too unbelievable. The movie thrives on star-power, cameos and special effects. But the visual treat of a climax will pull the wool over your eyes, and you will buy into the fantasy. Go on this final voyage. The seas might get a bit rough but the pirates won’t rob you off a good time.

Thus, Pirates of the Caribben: Salazar’s Revenge, a film that feels twice as long as it really is, and roughly five times as boring. It’s the sort of film that, when confronted with the challenge to be creative, chooses to have its characters topple over for laughs instead. In the end, it drowns in a typhoon of CGI action, which, as far as death by drowning goes, is perhaps the most painful way for this series to have floated away. But there you have it.

Another sequence, featuring Jack stuck in a guillotine that is twirling around and around, like a lethal fidget spinner, is particularly fun, if also characteristic of the amusement-park aesthetic of the film, which seems capable of inducing excitement, exhaustion and nausea, in that order. Yes, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales remains true to its Disney theme park roots. Loud, overstimulating and hard to take in all in one sitting, it feels like the vacation that you’ll need a vacation from.

There’s some wonder and thrill in its extensive escapades and combats befitting of its amusement park origins. But there’s also a premature cashing in of nostalgia through reunions that don’t feel as overdue or emotional as the makers would like you to believe. There’s repetition by way of heroes with no new tricks in their bag and villains trapped in one-dimensional menace.  I don’t know about you, but I am seasick of it all.

In my opinion Jack Sparrow shouldn’t have returned as this was an insult to his legend. After watching the film, my reaction was similar to that of Henry Turner, when he sees Sparrow for the first time – disappointed. Watch the film solely for the majestic Javier Bardem and his performance as the undead Captain Salazar. In fact it won’t be wrong to call the ‘lifeless’ Captain Salazar, as the ‘life’ of the film. I give it a generous 2.5 stars, half extra for Bardem and that well executed, resounding climax.
