Despite its bumps, the film is seldom boring, but it’s hard not to mourn for what could have been. Kahaani 2 starts out with so much promise but peters out before the end. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for the film and an additional half star for Vidya Balan’s knockout performance, which makes it three out of five for Kahaani 2. There’s a lot to like here, but consistency isn’t one of its strengths.

Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh is many things at once — a mystery, a drama about identity, a slowburn thriller, a public service admonishment — but it is primarily, well, Bengali. Ghosh’s grip gets far looser post-intermission, when the film falls into predictability — even inevitability — and the villains are exposed as pantomime caricatures whose motivations are contrived and overdone.

The storyline of Kahaani 2 isn’t as startlingly exceptional as that of its 2012 predecessor, but it harnesses the principal elements of the plot well enough not to let the missing pieces show up too glaringly. In its totality, Kahaani 2, is far from perfect. It is a taut, gripping and zippy drama punctuated with liberal doses of tension and intrigue, but it stumbles a touch on the home stretch. As far as thrillers go, Kahaani 2 isn’t the last word. But it certainly isn’t the same old story. Its understated style and riveting core make it well worth a watch.

This sequel directed by Sujoy Ghosh after a gap of four years is a whodunit that definitely serves up intrigue, but fails to keep a tight grip on proceedings throughtout its duration. So unlike the first part, that hit the ground running and set a benchmark in the genre, this one lacks the shark-bite. If you have an appetite for thrillers (albeit, with some flaws) give this one a try.

On the whole KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH comes across as a dark thriller that addresses a sensitive subject backed with fantastic performances. At the Box Office, the movie will be appreciated on the account of its engaging narrative. Highly Recommended. – See more at: https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movie/kahaani-2/critic-review/#sthash.ZLx9iixs.dpuf

The first half is gripping, and 100 percent entertaining. But the second half turns out to be slightly off track. While Sujoy Ghosh with his magical attention to detail has scripted out what was meant to be an amazing narrative, the second half drags, and is not as entertaining. The director also flavours the second half with subtle humour in the midst of intense moments. While I was with a theatreful of people laughing along at those subtleties, I felt like it might be taking the seriousness away from the issue of child sexual abuse.

Kahaani 2 starts on a very promising note. It’s pacy, gripping and engaging. The flashback in the first half deals with child abuse and is written and enacted so well that you genuinely root for the leading lady and her brave ways. You are emotionally invested in the little child’s story. And it breaks for the interval, just at the right time. You go and fetch yourself that big bucket of popcorn (damn those 35 dirhams) anticipating an edge-of-the-seat, bite-your-nails kind of a climax. Alas, it’s a bummer. Surprisingly the film resorts to such Hindi film clichés that I found myself Googling to check who really the director of the movie was: Sujoy Ghosh or Rohit Shetty.

In between Kalimpong, Kolkata and Chandan Nagar, the answers are served in a platter. What’s the point of a thriller if you have no questions to ask? Of course, the questions we ask are absolutely banal. Note to self-it’s a thriller, you can’t say much! Oh damn, let’s put it as dubiously as possible – are co-incidences so smooth always or just in our movies? Rhetoric reply, of course but don’t let anything hold you back from giving this movie shot.

Kahaani 2 has one of the best first halves I’ve seen in a while. Not one frame is wasted as the set-up is introduced and teased out.Post-interval, Kahaani 2, which ranges from Kalimpong to Chandan Nagar to Kolkata, becomes a different film, reminding you in bits of the Bollywood Teen, and the Hollywood Kill Bill. After Kahaani, which took us into a fresh space, this one disappoints. If Ghosh does plan on making a third, he’ll have to up his game considerably.

Director Sujoy Ghosh has pulled off one of the most gripping openings scenes in a Hindi film to kick off his mystery, Kahaani 2.Some of the twists in the second half may seem predictable, but it’s buoyed by some fantastic acting performances. Still, that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this dark thriller. Also, watch out for director Ghosh’s finesse in bringing out the middle class milieu of West Bengal.
