Aligarh is an important film, and it’s powered by sensitive writing, nuanced direction, and masterful performances from its central players. The image of Siras, a grown man blushing when he’s described as handsome, or when a gathering of gay men hail his poetry, stays with you long after you’ve watched the film. Its deliberate pace occasionally makes you restless, and you long to know more about Siras than the plot lets you in on. What kind of professor was he? Did he have any friends? How did his ‘shaming’ impact his family in Nagpur?

But the film itself is bigger than these things. Like in his ‘Shahid’, Hansal Mehta and scriptwriter Apurva Asrani have come up with a lead character and a film which shines with authenticity and emotional heft, which leaves you thinking, and which says something we should all listen to, especially in these times when it has become more imperative than ever before: we can be different, but we are us.

Aligarh, essentially a study of a victim of entrenched prejudices, articulates its poetry of pain with remarkable precision, right down to the subtlest of its nuances. Mehta strips the tragic true story of all vestiges of overt sentimentality. Instead, he fills the depths of the understated but intensely moving drama with genuine, unsettling emotion. So, in addition to being a portrayal of the gay experience in an unjust and insensitive society, Aligarh is a human drama with universal resonance. It encapsulates the plight of all dissenters.

Mehta, who earlier gave us the gritty Shahid (2012), is evidently at his best when he brings true stories to life and, in his own way, fights against the injustice meted out to the protagonists. Thankfully, Mehta, for most part, doesn’t get carried away by the emotions attached to such a subject, and presents it as starkly as he can. The meandering, slow pace largely works for the film, but sometimes works against it. Watch it for sure.

“The eyes of others our prisons; their thoughts our cages”, this remarkable quote by Virginia Woolf pretty much sums up the film. Aligarh stays with you much after you see it, especially for Bajpayee and his nuanced portrayal of a man brutally put to shame by an intrusive and insensitive society. It’s subtlety, redefined.

As for Rajkummar Rao, he flawlessly adds tremendous credibility to his character. The rest of the film’s cast, Ashish Vidhyarthi and others, bring in their value added performances to make the film reach its goal. While the film does not have any mainstream songs, it’s the background music (Karan Kulkarni) acts as an icing on the cake. While the film’s cinematography (Satya Rai Nagpaul) is superlative, the film’s editing (Apurva Asrani) could have been better as it could have worked miracles to the film’s narrative and progress, especially in the second half. On the whole, ALIGARH is a sensitive film which will touch your heart. However, due to its slow pace, it may appeal to a very niche segment of multiplex audiences.

Aligarh Story:  

Set in a city of Uttar Pradesh and based on true events, the plot revolves around Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras who taught Marathi at Aligarh Muslim University. He was sacked from his position of Reader and Chair of Modern Indian Languages, on charges of homosexuality. A sting operation was conducted by a TV channel which showed him in an embrace with a rickshaw puller, at his house inside the campus.

    दो-चार-दस गिनती की फिल्में को छोड़ दें तो हिंदी फिल्म इंडस्ट्री ने समलैंगिकों और समलैंगिकता को जिस बेरुखी, जिस छिछले तरीके से परदे पर अपने मतलब (…और भौंडे मनोरंजन) के लिए इस्तेमाल किया है, उसे साफ़ और पाक करने के लिए कोई एक फिल्म काफी साबित नहीं हो सकती, ये एक शर्मनाक सच है…पर इसी के साथ एक सच और भी है, कोशिशों ने हौसलों का दामन अभी छोड़ा नहीं है. हंसल मेहता की बेहद सुलझी हुई, संजीदगी और सादगी से भरी हुई ईमानदार फिल्म ‘अलीगढ़’ ऐसी ही एक बेहतरीन कोशिश है, जो समलैंगिकता को सनसनीखेज बनाकर परोसने की बेहयाई नहीं करती बल्कि उसे ‘निजता के अधिकार’ के साथ मिलाकर एक ऐसा मुहीम छेड़ देती है जिससे बचना-मुंह मोड़ना और अनदेखा कर देना किसी भी संवेदनशील आदमी के लिए आसान नहीं रह जाता!

    प्रोफेसर सिरास [परदे पर मनोज वाजपेयी] अलीगढ़ यूनिवर्सिटी में मराठी पढ़ाते हैं. तलाकशुदा हैं, सो अपने छोटे से कमरे में अकेले रहते हैं. अकेलेपन के दर्द से जूझते प्रोफेसर सिरास को लता मंगेशकर का ‘आपकी नज़रों ने समझा’ सुनना और सुनते-गुनगुनाते व्हिस्की के हलके-हलके घूंट गले से उतारना अच्छा लगता है. उनकी खाली शामें अक्सर ऐसे ही गुजरती हैं, बंद कमरे में! ऐसी ही एक रात अचानक कुछ रिपोर्टर उनके घर में घुस कर उन्हें एक दूसरे आदमी के साथ अन्तरंग स्थिति में होते हुए कैमरे में कैद कर लेते हैं. उनके साथ मारपीट भी होती है पर कड़ी मुश्किलें तब शुरू होती हैं जब समाज उन्हें इस पूरे वाकये के बाद एक अलग संकीर्ण नजरिये से देखना शुरू कर देता है. यूनिवर्सिटी से उन्हें ‘नैतिकता’ की दुहाई देकर निकाल दिया जाता है. इन सबके बावजूद प्रोफेसर लगातार हालातों से समझौते करने में जुटे रहते हैं. आखिरकार, उनकी ख़ामोशी को आवाज़ देता है एक नौजवान रिपोर्टर दीपू [राजकुमार राव] और तब, प्रोफेसर सिरास अपने अधिकारों, अपने सम्मान की लड़ाई के लिए खुल कर सामने आते हैं.

    सच्ची घटनाओं से प्रेरित ‘अलीगढ़’ आपको बड़े धीरे-धीरे प्रोफेसर सिरास के करीब ले जाती है, जहां उनकी व्यक्तिगत पसंद-नापसंद से अलग एक ऐसा मासूम किरदार आपके सामने आ खड़ा होता है जो बड़ी समझदारी से प्यार को समझता है और उतनी ही सरलता से समझाता भी है. जैसे-जैसे आप प्रोफेसर को जानने लगते हैं, उनका समलैंगिक होना आपके जेहन से दूरी बनाने लगता है. उनकी कविताओं में आप प्रेम की नई परिभाषाएं तलाशने लगते हैं. उनकी आँखों का खालीपन धीरे-धीरे आपके दिल को कचोटने लगता है, और ये सब अगर मुमकिन होता है तो उसके पीछे है अपूर्व असरानी की दिल छू लेने वाली कहानी और मनोज बाजपेयी का शानदार अभिनय. मनोज का अभिनय बोलने से ज्यादा कहने में यकीन रखता है. प्रोफेसर सिरास को वो जिस संजीदगी से और नजाकत से दर्शकों तक पहुंचाते हैं, एक वक़्त आता है जब आप दोनों को [मनोज और प्रोफेसर सिरास] अलग-अलग करके देखना भूल ही जाते हैं. अदालत की उबाऊ कार्यवाई में बोर होते हुए, ‘हैंडसम’ बोलने पर शर्माते हुए, ‘आपकी नज़रों ने समझा’ गुनगुनाते वक़्त लय छोड़ते-तोड़ते हुए और संगम पर दीपू के साथ खिलते-मुस्कुराते हुए; मनोज एक ऐसी छाप छोड़ जाते हैं जो आपको बार-बार अभिनय में उनके कद की याद दिलाता रहेगा. सधे और नपे-तुले अभिनय से, राजकुमार राव अपने किरदार के साथ बड़ी मजबूती से खड़े दिखाई पड़ते हैं और फिल्म को आगे ले जाने में कहीं कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ते.

    इतने सब के बावजूद, ‘अलीगढ़’ में अगर (मुझे) थोड़ी बहुत शिकायत रह जाती है, तो वो है इसका ‘शाहिद’ की तरह का धारदार न होना. ‘अलीगढ़’ आपको सोचने पर मजबूर तो करती है, आपको प्रोफेसर सिरास की शख्सियत से बखूबी रूबरू भी कराती है पर पूरी तरह झकझोर देने में कहीं न कहीं कमज़ोर रह जाती है. फिल्म में दीपू सेबास्टियन का प्रेम-प्रसंग भी फिल्म में किसी तरह का कुछ ठोस, जरूरी और जायज़ इज़ाफा नहीं करता. पर इन चंद शिकायतों से परे, हंसल मेहता की ‘अलीगढ़’ एक बेहद जरूरी फिल्म है जो समलैंगिकता को कठघरे में खड़ा नहीं करती बल्कि उसे आपके ड्राइंग रूम में जगह देती है, आपकी बातचीत का हिस्सा बनती है और बेहतर समाज की तरफ एक अहम कदम बढ़ाती है. आखिर अब नहीं तो कब? जरूर देखिये! [3.5/5]

    Aligarh is one of those rare films which has a great plot, critically acclaimed actors, skillful director, very appealing trailer and a movie made very passionately but still doesn't connect with audience. I have immense respect for LGBT rights and deeply moved with atrocities meted out at Prof Siras. But, I could barely keep my eyes open towards the end of watching Aligarh.

    Movie is made at an extremely slow pace and darkness of cinema hall, comfortable seats and soothing conditioned air makes it an irresistible combination to doze off. If it wasn't for Rs 350/- ticket + 250/- popcorn, I wouldn't have battled with my eye lids. This story isn't about homosexuality because that point of view wasn't discussed and justified in the film. This film is a biography on a person Prof Siras, who has a distinct outlook towards life, society, current generation and also happens to have a different sexual orientation.

    A great part of film is spent on building the characterization of Prof Siras, who is a reserved shy person and loves old Hindi music with his glass of whisky. A big fan of poetry who loves writing books. Someone, who is a staunch believer in religion and orthodox in nature yet he is open to have relationship with a person of different religion and socio-economic class. Someone, who abhors the casualness of current generation and believes that this generation makes everything trivial and doesn't go deeper in understanding feelings. A person with great self respect who gets hurt when people takes dig at his sentiments. A simple apolitical person who conveniently dozes off in a courtroom where his case is getting discussed, because he doesn't understand nor interested in convoluted legal mumbo-jumbo. Very few films have such well defined characterization of a role. Kudos to Hansal Mehta for doing it so impeccably.

    It is one of the best played roles of Manoj Bajpayee. A dynamic actor like him who is known to play aggressive roles mouthing fierce dialogues have played a role of such calm and composed professor. You'll admire his grip on characterization when he closes his eyes and gets lost in himself, when he feels shy, immense pain which is reflected from him eyes but not from his words. It is remarkable to see Mr Bajpayee playing this role with so much perfection. If there is anything to be watched in this film then it is Manoj Bajpayee's acting prowess. For Rajkummar Rao, this was one of the easiest roles ever played which didn't give him much room to challenge himself and show his acting capabilities.

    Now when everything is so great, what really went wrong?

    1. If this movie was about homosexuality (or any other social matter for that matter) then it would have still got the audience attention. But this film was about Prof Siras characterization. Does anyone really care who he was and what he really cared for?

    2. Pace of the film is extremely slow and people don't have so much patience to understand, assimilate, ruminate and then digest characterization of a person.

    3. Many of the threads were left open, which might be intentional but seems like a technical fault. For e.g. Whether Prof Siras partner was hand in glove with journalist or not. What was the animosity between AU faculty and Prof Siras. Was it political for the power or it was a related to religious bias?

    Verdict: This movie isn't of everyone's taste. Be very careful before you choose to watch it. You should have a deep interest in philosophy and slow paced films should be your type. There aren't any explicit scenes or usage of bold language, so it is a safe film from that point of view. Ideally, to be watched alone if you are a thinker. Don't drag your friends or partner along if it isn't their type of film.
