Escape Plan English Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand Site:Masand’s Verdict (CNN IBN)

It’s not a bad premise, but it all unfolds so slowly, you’ll be checking your watch repeatedly to make sure it hasn’t stopped working. Many of the twists here are predictable, and the action scenes rather ordinary, which you don’t expect from a film starring the two greatest icons of the genre. Alas, director Mikael Hafstrom fails to tie up loose ends in the film’s mediocre script, and the two legends themselves appear a tad embarrassed to have signed up for this snoozefest. I’m going with two out of five for Escape Plan. Stallone and Schwarznegger deserve better. And so do we.

Arnie and Sly are synonymous with action films. Even though both, The Governator and the Italian Stallion are a tad worn around the edges, the two of them serve up some unfussy meat-and-potatoes fare. Their biceps and forearms are as thick as hams, but the ammunition expenditure and fight scenes are scaled back. The pace does, however, go into higher gear during the second half. The characters fit to a tee, except for 50 Cent, incongruously miscast as a computer nerd! The action is routine but the way they plan the escape is interesting and inspired. These guys may be old, but they sure know their chops and can still deal the dice, old-school style.

Escape Plan, directed by Mikael Hafstrom, is designed solely to deliver the pleasure of seeing Schwarzenegger in the same frame at Sylvester Stallone. Escape Plan isn’t as juicy as it could have been and the story takes too long to lift-off. But the two dinosaurs still pack a punch – and I mean that literally. There are enough twists, turns and built-in nostalgia to make this reasonably fun. I’m going with two and a half stars.

Escape Plan’s concept is an interesting one. However, the first half of the film could be a tad predictable for some. Stock characters, bordering on stereotypical, are scattered across the film — the cruel warden, his ruthless psychopath of a man Friday and the reformed thug. However, despite all of that, if you do decide to stick around for the second half of the film, as I did, you will be amply rewarded. Escape Plan is a two-man show. If you’ve loved the Terminator and Rambo series, you will love this.

With a wafer-thin plot line and two iconic action heroes in one frame, Escape Plan offers a predictably rousing fare that could act as a tutorial for prisoners intending to break free. The first 30 minutes of the film drags, though there is ample action – both physical and verbal. The screen lights up only when Stallone hooks up with Schwarzenegger to collaborate against Hobbes and his cronies. What’s good about Escape Plan is that it is clean and not at all contemptuous till the very end. Watch it if you are Stallone or Schwarzenegger fans.
