Ice Age 4 Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand  Site:CNN IBN

It’s hard to shake off that feeling of fatigue as you sit there in your seat watching Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, the fourth, and sadly most formulaic installment in the popular animated series.Despite the gorgeous animation, Continental Drift lacks the simple charm of the previous films. The movie relies too heavily on large set-pieces and breakneck pace, pointing to the possibility that the franchise has in fact started to flag.I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Ice Age 4: Continental Drift. It’s harmless fun for younger audiences, but adults who loved the earlier films will agree that it’s time to put these animals down.

The franchise carries on showcasing its brilliant art work, its warm and vibrant characters and its straight-from-the-heart story of team spirit and survival, of not only the fittest, but the weakest too. Not to miss out are the lessons for life you get to re-learn: Never leave a friend behind. But before that there are loads of goodies for all you kidos… and biggies alike. Yes, Ice Age 4 is a fitting sequel to the animal saga that turned out to be a moving human parable when it was first released in 2002. Excellent in 3-D and eminently watchable in 2-D too, Ice Age 4 is indeed alluring fare for the family this weekend.

Strictly from the perspective of a child, Ice Age: Continental Drift is charming and at some places, even adorable. The cute quotient works very well and so does the humour, which is basic, easily understandable and laugh-worthy. Visually, too, it is stunning and makes full use of 3D. Unlike most children’s movies, this one doesn’t have a moral lesson tucked inside, although it does tell you, the kids that is, the important values of true friendship and family. So far, so good. The journey, risky but thrilling, is not without its beautiful moments.

Like always, this part too presents various relationships co-existing in one space before the supercontinent Pangaea breaks apart (a historical phenomenon better known as the Continental Drift). The characters do what they are best at – make one adore them!.Nonetheless, it’s an enjoyable watch but could have garnered a tad-bit more support (from me) had the story been less weaker. Kids will enjoy the film thoroughly however, like every animated film, it’s not your regular cartoon, these films are meant for kids and adults alike. Go watch your sub-zero heroes at the earliest. Verdict: Fun, inspiring and engaging. Makes for a suitable watch for the whole family this weekend.

In the crowded arena of kiddie blockbusters, the Ice Age movies — the fourth of which is the new, 3-D Ice Age: Continental Drift — are among the more slapstick. When they are any good, the motley crew of critters is silly and stupid and going splat. The filmmakers stuff the film to a manic degree, albeit with increasingly textured animation. They collectively lead the gang through the shifting tectonics of family and romantic life, inevitably finding predictable lessons along the way. But “Continental Drift,” like the rest of the Ice Age movies, is best when it leaves poignancy to the folks at Pixar.Extinction, after all, awaits us all. So how about we stick to the slapstick?
