Machine Gun Preacher Movie Review

Machine Gun Preacher is a true-life story that stars Gerard Butler as Sam Childers, a Pennsylvania druggie and hardened criminal whose life changed when he found Jesus. During a missionary trip to Africa, Childers became obsessed with rescuing Sudanese children that were orphaned and recruited by the vicious Lord’s Resistance Army.I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for Machine Gun Preacher. There’s more gunning than preaching here, and the film’s best intentions get diluted in that bloodbath. Not the best way to spend your weekend.

A deep thread of religiosity and personal conflict arising out of faith binds Marc Forster’s Machine Gun Preacher, a biographical account of a man truly touched by the divine. If you watch Machine Gun Preacher in context of Forster’s intrinsic ideas about the human condition, you might end up liking it. It’s not great cinema and Forster is no patron saint but it is nonetheless a compelling film evocative of fate and faith; never mind that it is flawed at places you wish it wasn’t.

Machine Gun Preacher is a biopic on Sam Childers, an outlaw biker who amended his errant lifestyle and eventually became the gun bearing messiah for the children of war-torn South Sudan, Africa. From a white supremacist who beats up the blacks, to the father who devotes his life for the well being of the Sudanese orphans over his own, the film takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. You end up asking yourself, how far can you go to help someone who may not survive to see another day! Machine Gun Preacher is about preaching and practicing philanthropy. Intense and disturbing, it’s a must watch provided you are not too faint hearted.
