Believe it or not there is more emphasis on the characters and their situation, than on the shiny automobiles that used to be the real stars earlier. The dialogue, unfortunately, is just as pithy and the acting remains one-note.In all fairness though, who’s looking for anything other than high-adrenalin action here? The stunts are crazy and often jaw-dropping, the slums of Rio lend a gritty edge to the visual landscape of this film. It’s loud and dumb, but also undeniably good fun. I’m going with three out of five for ‘Fast Five’. Like junk food it’s a guilty pleasure to be enjoyed, then quickly forgotten.

The film has two action giants pitted against each other, which means you are going to get total value for money in the kick-butt department. As if Vin Diesel’s bald and brawny machismo wasn’t enough, there’s hard-rock Dwayne Johnson standing tall as his worthy opponent. The eye-ball to eye-ball confrontations and the gritty physical encounters between the two are the stuff dream AXN cuts are made of. Add to this all that guy bonding between the two (they end up as frenemies) and you have a cops-and-robbers duo that grabs eyeballs from their very first encounter.

A heist caper such as this could have really done well with some well-heeled sidekicks, peppy banter and better scenes than entering the fortified harem of a powerful crime boss with bikini as bait. That said, Fast Five comes to life in wonderfully-filmed car stunts and the hare-coursing chase atop Rio’s roofs. There isn’t much of acting required here and it can be stated rather explicitly that none of the actors even look like they are making an attempt. Despite that, Fast Five never bores you. It’s tight, uses its material well and is slick in the way it’s shot. Clearly, the soul of the film is its muscle-flexing action sequences, moving train stunts and Rio’s underbelly.

It’s that what makes Fast Five little more than a speed fest on testosterone, which doesn’t step on the brake to pause for even its villains. It’s quite an assembly of actors here, culled from previous Fast & Furious films, and Diesel remains the star shining in the middle of it all. There is also a lot of talk about family, while a pregnant girl jumps off roofs to escape bullets. Try caring.
