Armed only with a handicam and an unputdownable spirit, Sheikh Nasir, an amateur filmmaker in Malegaon, a small industrial town about 270 kms outside Mumbai, struggles to make his version of the Superman story, titled Malegaon Ka Superman. But there are many hurdles to overcome.Supermen of Malegaon cheerfully celebrates the enthusiasm and the commitment of this motley group to make the best possible superhero film they can. At roughly 65 minutes it’s brisk, enjoyable, and will have you smiling from ear to ear. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Supermen of Malegaon. If you love the movies, make time for this one.

Crucially though, SOM gets why Malegaon is crazy about cinema, even making its own – movies capture our madness, melancholy and magic, mirroring these to us, making us love what we see. It is in cinema that India’s vibrant creativity – its tales and taboos, its violence and splendour, its lilting music and haunting poetry like Malegaon’s amazing ‘Chand se khitaab’ – find free and faithful expression. Cinema in India makes us laugh at our weaknesses, applaud our strengths, watch with tenderness and heart our grim lives and eternal hope. That is what makes it precious. And it is this quality of understanding that makes Supermen of Malegaon a beautiful film. Go watch.

Supermen of Malegaon is full of heartrending moments, juxtaposed with unavoidable satire. So much for irony that Superman Shafique lost his battle with cancer last year, only wishing to be seen on the big screen. Talk about dreams coming true. Supermen of Malegaon is a 52-minute non-stop ride that leaves you with a smile plastered across your face. Don’t miss it for anything.

Supermen of Malegaon is a hilarious, poignant and well-researched take on one of the dozens of local film industries existing in the country.It is a love poem to cinema, an ode to the spirit of human ingenuity, a passionate tale about making films and it’s hilarious to boot. For most of the audience, this might be the funniest documentary ever made.Ironically, it is Supermen of Malegaon that has an amazing story that has not yet been told. While the world has watched Spiderman on three previous occasions but this is perhaps the first time anyone is telling the funny, hugely inspiring and globally awarded story of a local film industry.

Rarely have I seen such a joyous celebration of the madness cinema is. The locus is Malegaon, a small town a few hundred kilometres off Mumbai. The latter is the home of the big budget multi-starrers that keep us in thrall; the former a town which produces lickety-spit rip-offs of major movies. A few residents of Malegon recognise the fact that movies are magic; they also prove that to recreate that magic what you need primarily is imagination . If you have that, and a will, and inventiveness, you can get superman to fly
