In Sultan, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, the actor comes closest to playing a character that feels real, complete with flaws and failures, and one that doesn’t take his shirt off for purely gratuitous reasons. Playing a middle-aged, out-of-shape former wrestler who enters the ring again, to exorcise personal demons, Salman delivers an impressive, full-bodied performance, easily his most credible acting job since…forever.Sultan is predictable, no two questions about it. But it’s powered by a riveting central performance that makes you overlook so many of its problems. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five.

Ali Abbas Zafar’s direction is superb. He has kept the narrative style simple and extremely entertaining and engaging. Also, his direction caters as much to the classes as to masses, as much to the ladies as to men, as much to the old as to the young. On the whole, Sultan is a blockbuster and will go on to write box-office history. It will smash old box-office records and create new ones. It will turn out to be one of the biggest ever blockbusters, if not THE BIGGEST ever so far!

At nearly three hours of runtime, Sultan gets heavy and repetitive - only so many training sequences can look sharp and by the time Randeep Hooda shows up as MMA coach Fateh Singh, resembling a perennially eating Brad Pitt from Ocean's Eleven, but overacting as he gets senti about Sultan, you become restive. By cutting 30 minutes of flab - running commentaries, kite-running, taalas, taalis - Sultan could've been a leaner, meaner movie. As it is, it's more a large lassi, not an espresso shot. But hey - who drinks espresso on Eid? Go watch Sultan - it's got moments of "ghana" good fun.

Sultan is a case of a superstar vehicle latching on to the current trend of sports films but failing to achieve the requisite grounding in the rough and tumble of the wrestling pits to evolve into a convincing drama.Whatever heft that Sultan has stems from Salman's star power and the impressively mounted wrestling and mixed martial arts sequences. But Sultan is a Salman Khan film made solely for the superstar's fans. It has everything to please its target audience. It has megahit written all over it.

Make no mistake. Sultan is a classic Salman Khan vehicle in the skin of a sports drama imagining itself to be more profound than it really is. Doesn’t mean it’s not engaging, a lot of it is but, despite the possibilities, writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar relies solely on its main star’s drawing power and offers nothing novel in terms of storytelling.

‘Sultan’ has him breaking free from Bhai-giri bondage by getting his character to crack and bleed. His down-and-out wrestler has foibles, is fallible, is human. Sultan Ali Khan has faults, and is punished for it. Because of which Sultan scores, and delivers a solid entertainer with heft.

Ali Abbas Zafar's Sultan is a thorough crowd-pleaser. The film is a cocktail of sportsmanship, drama, romance, patriotism... heavily spiced with the factor called Salman Khan. Salman, in large chunks of the film, is Salman. And that is probably what still works for him. The film's emotional scenes draw that rare teary-eyed moment from you, but the real Sultan, much like its protagonist, lies inside the ring.

Ali Abbas Zafar, director of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Gunday, got a chance to work with Salman Khan, one of the biggest Bollywood superstars, in Sultan. And, the result is amazing. Aditya Chopra’s screenplay ensures Sultan has all the popular ingredients and Khan’s superstardom is the cherry on the cake. His fans wouldn’t mind if his accent is not up to the mark and other characters are not given the chance to spread their wings because the heavy dose of popular mainstream Bollywood is enough to do the tricks.

On the whole, SULTAN comes across as a paisa vasool, seeti-maar unadulterated entertainer which will be loved by classes and masses alike. At the box office, the lack of a credible opposition, perfect release timing [festival period] combined with an extended 5-day weekend will ensure that the film will break records and emerge as the biggest hit of the year so far. The film has got 'B-L-O-C-K-B-U-S-T-E-R' written all over it. Go for it!

Sultan is a mixed bag of emotion, action, love and of course Salman Khan. It is a love story at its core but the coat of wrestling works well! This is an out and out commercial film that has its moments of outstretched realities. For those who enjoy drama, this is the perfect weekend watch! Sultan is not a sports drama! It is a sheer Salman Khan drama. For its entertainment value and a cliched but watchable storyline, I am going with a 3/5 for the film.

  1. Dear Admin,

Is this really a review (from Umair Sandhu, facebook) you've counted in? I can't believe you are taken away by an amateurish publicity stunt on social networking sites, by a hardcore fan. I have been a constant visitor on your site and a regular reviewer in the comment section from last 2 years but the kind of unethical, unprofessional mistake you've committed now is so disheartening.

I hope you rectify this soon before people start questioning your ability of judgement.

    Regards,

  2. It is a Desi Version of Rocky or Simply Brothers Part 2, There is nothing new in the movie which Audience hasn't watched ,May be watched thousand times before ,Same Training & Same MMA Fight,Surprisingly Salman Was A Desi Pehalwan before but in the end Suddenly become Boxer what a Magic!!!Also the Skinny Goat Anushka was giving Dhobi pachaad to an Elephant type pehalwan ,too hard to digest,In Short Positve Points -Salman & Anushka to watch on Screen ,Negative Points Their Chemistry & too weak & same old Script, Final Verdict- Life time Business because of Eid & Salman Fans-140-150 Crore & would be considered as Semi-Hit

    1. Saw it on the link above 3 star to Bajrangi and 3 star to this Gaurav. Is it better or same I wish any of the other reviews would also have made this comparison between Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan

      Delete
    2. Hi Divya,
Can't compare the two saying one is better and other is not. Bajrangi Bhaijaan , for me, had more flavors in content but eventually looked like a comforting and patronizing effort for Salman's image. This one succeeds in building empathy around a character, not the actor playing it. You'll see Sultan in salman for the most and not Salman in Sultan.

  15. Sultan is out and out Bhai Movie, there is nothing new to offer, there is nothing new on which You go gaga, there is nothing which makes you to wipe your tears, first of all it has nothing to do with Sports as projected during teasers and trailers.

Story is mostly inspired by Rocky IV, screenplay and Dialouges are just average. If you shed out the "Bhai ki Movie Hai" angle you'll find yourself in the lurch condition. Script has many flaws for eg. Anushka character at one point depicts a strong lady but suddenly she falls in love becoz Sallu bhai has defeated a wrestler twice from his weight category and that too within a month time. Are we nuts not to understand emotions ???

Secondly after winning so many accolades and doing reel scene but real advertisement on screen he doesn't have so much of fund to construct Blood Bank in his village and for that reason he readily agrees to do MMA typo ...is this even suffice a reason for a film to be termed as emotional.

I seriously doubt on the public understanding and their way of looking things.

For me Sultan is just and average movie and I'll rate it 2.5/5. 0.5 extra for Govind, salman half age friend who looks like his son rather friend :).
