Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Hindi Movie Reviews

Directed by debutant Shashank Khaitan, the film wears its obsession with 'DDLJ' like a badge of honor, and offers a cheeky spin on that enduring love story.'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania' comes peppered with smart dialogue, and filled with genuine affection for a cinematic blockbuster that it repeatedly references...but with flair. I'm going with three out of five. Watch it for Varun and Alia, who're crackling in it!

HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a quintessential Bollywood romance and ticks all the customary boxes that make a love story work. Yet, Shashank Khaitan makes sure the screenwriting incorporates several amusing and compelling episodes that steer clear of rusty formulas that we are used to watching in films of this genre. Shashank also steers clear of full-scale melodrama, loud and familiar masala and earsplitting background score, which could've seeped in naturally, given the genre of the film. He keeps it subtle, but makes sure the film wins you over. On the whole, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a beautifully textured love story that wins you over. There's no stopping this one from hitting the bull's eye. Sure-shot winner!

Shashank Khaitan has scripted a love story which midway turns into a family drama too. His story about a boy falling in love with a girl who is soon to be married, reminds of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Chalte Chalte but the similarity ends there. His screenplay is quite different. The first half is light and the emphasis is on the fun element. There are many scenes in which the audience ends up smiling or laughing. On the whole, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is an enjoyable entertainer and will keep everyone associated with it, as also the audience, very happy.

This is a lark, a goofy film where you know what's going to happen but where you enjoy watching it unfold. The strength of Khaitan's film lies in how it's not trying too hard, it's not trying at reinventing the wheel, and instead being honest to two characters who, it becomes gradually apparent, aren't who they said they were -- or, more importantly, they aren't who they thought they were. Filmi people end up living filmi lives. And sometimes we get to watch. Good on you, Shashank Khaitan. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is the kinda film Simran would have loved.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge for those that weren’t old enough to fully delight in the spectacle of SRK’s Raj wooing the parents of Kajol’s Simran against all odds nearly two decades ago.The retro rut that Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is stuck in might be good for a mildly diverting spot-the-DDLJ-allusions game. To be fair, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania does have some warm passages. But the overall package that it adds up to is about as appetizing as a bottle of beer gone flat. Recommended only for Bollywood junkies that love their froth served in receptacles that have no depth.

The strength of Shashank's debut film (tribute to 'DDLJ') is the performances and characters, whether it is Humpty-Kavya's cutesy, charming chemistry or the unbeatable boy-gang bonding with Shonty and Poplu. Unlike the characters, the story doesn't enthuse or grow beyond the original plot, but it's pinned with warm, delightful moments and laughable dialogues. HSKD has plenty of feel-good moments, but nothing that will leave you punch-drunk. For romantics who believe in their dils and their dulhaniyas - and the quintessential 'Ja, jee le apni zindagi'! - it's a sweet watch (beware the sugar rush!).

I smiled all the way till the half way point. After the interval, it becomes another story. Or shall we say, the same old, same old story, in which the plot, which had been going swimmingly along despite its stretches, begins to meander, and lose its way.The title tells us that the film is yet another ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ variant, so we can’t complain when the plot points start feeling the same, even if the details are different. How about this lot in a film that toplines a smooth-as-butter, not-weighed-under- a- DDLJ-tribute plot?

Kavya, Humpty and his two friends provide a lot of entertainment through this two hour ten minute film. The entire film is pacy and crisp, the duration is perfect and at no point are you bored. Debutant director Shashank Khaitan weaves this typical Indian story in an engaging plot and gets some fabulous performances from his actors. The film also has some good emotional moments. Predictable in most parts, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania entertains you from the first frame to the last one. It's a refreshing film.

Humpty Sharma uses a done-to-death story with wonderfully written script that makes you enjoy the predictive lot. Shashank has also added quite a few twists and turns to some of the crucial parts in DDLJ that will make you realize that this is a smart adaptation. There have been way too many movies on the lines of traditional girls not wanting to marry a stranger and yet going for it just for the sake of her family. This is one of the typical Dharma Productions full of wedding scenes, jazz and Punjabi thumka.

Rehashing DDLJ is venturing into the cult holy space and when the same doesn’t fructify even into half-good cinema, it’s a heart break. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania puts on no airs about giving novelty a miss but that isn’t the prime concern here. It’s a familiar film that makes you queasy because of a bad second hour. Blame my expectations but the film’s second half was a tirade that even gave me a headache. It wasn’t DDLJ butchered! I quite enjoyed the viridity of the first half but the second half went so miserably wrong. Even if the end didn’t make any sense with ‘Jaa Jee Le Apni Zindagi’ coming back to haunt you, I am glad it was over and I could go home and take an aspirin.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is deconstructed Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayange, the iconic 1995 blockbuster starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The ingredients from the original cult romance are all intact but director Shashank Khaitan has given a modern spin to the classic. Traditionalists may mock at his attempt, while the adventurous ones may embrace his tweaked (read trivialised) version The story is predictable, but this film is made watchable primarily because of Bhatt and Dhawan. This film may not go down as the biggest romance of 2014, but it’s not fair to write it off either.

Never has Bollywood seen a romance like this. Where a pretty girl leaves home in pursuit of a perfect wedding gown, and wins a handsome lover in the bargain. Yes, director Shashank Khaitan’s chaotic love story is more about finding the perfect ‘lehenga’ and less about love.Despite some good performances and a few wonderfully written lines, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ stops from being an endearing tale of love, because it blindly piggybacks on the classic without any heart or logic. It’s much ado about a lehenga!

    1. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is going to be worth your time and money! It's an entertainer in the true sense. Humpty Sharma along with his Dulhaniya & two bosom pals takes you on a full Paisa Wasool cinematic ride that is laden with crisp humor, new-age romance, Dhansoo Naach-gaana, witty one liners and some senti Rona-Dhona too. 7. This is a hat-trick 3rd class movie by Dharma Movies. What is Karan Johar doing, First Gori tere pyar mein, then hasee toh phasee & now the worst overrated movie, HSKD..This is tribute to DDLJ, my foot, it's an insult to legendary DDLJ.Karan Johar is sinking the career of Varun dhawan, n who is this Alia bhatt, Is she an actor, Can she really act is a big question mark..This movie is full of bollywood stereotypes, If you look for class, creativity & entertainment, this is Zero

  8. Down the line, you also have good natured comic characters from both Alia and Varun, which can hold the audience to a great extent. Also, as per the filmmakers and the lead characters, the movie is seen somewhere recalling the 18 year old timeless love story DDLJ, which makes them give a tribute to this blockbuster of 1995. 10. HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA:
Silly second half spoils the fun! Strictly Watchable!! [2.5/5]

19 extended years, and it still continues to impress, amaze and inspire filmmakers from time to time. DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAAYENGE has been a rich source of inspiration for many Bollywood romantic family dramas, last being Rohit Shetty’s action entertainer CHENNAI EXPRESS and the latest being Shashank Khaitan’s HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA. The plot is lifted smartly; the characters easily find their references well-established before, even the original gets mentioned every now and then to make it sound like a bold and deliberate statement for the makers but the convenience and the laziness in writing that fails to innovate and bring any breeziness on screen. Still, there is a certain likeability flowing all around. Thank to the vigorously ‘in their characters’ lead pair and all those suggestions of DDLJ in the backdrop!

The blithe prankster son of an UK billionaire Raj Malhotra is reinstated in the shoes of ‘sadda Dilli wala munda’ Rakesh Sharma aka Humpty of Vidya Book Center [Played by Varun Dhawan]. Simran here is Kavya, played by Alia Bhatt- a kind of more expressive and a louder version of Kajol whose reason for the month long break is a designer lehanga for her wedding she wants to purchase from Delhi. They meet, greet, fight, kiss & make-up and conveniently find themselves under the sheet just before the interval. That was probably an intentional indication that you should now start expecting everything but nothing soon after the intermission gets over. The fun part just goes missing and the time-pass approach in writings starts taking over. The counterpart and the other contender for Kavya’s hands is an NRI [Idiot box sensation Sidharth Shukla in his silver screen debut avatar] who is absolutely perfect in all senses. And now, it’s high time for Humpty to prove himself as the better choice for Kavya.

The first part of HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is filled with tremendous promises of having lots of fun & frolic moments in the ride and it sure upholds most of it with the witty gang of friends forever. Gaurav Pandey and Sahil Vaid as Humpty’s friends-cum-partners in crime provide good lot of humor with their presence felt in almost every scene. Even the strict, unforgiving and straight-faced father of the bride [the impressive Ashutosh Rana] is shown here a gentle, sympathetic and caring family man who can be reasonable if pursued in good health. His equation with his family is very different from the Amrish Puri of DDLJ and it is quite a pleasant sight to notice the tenderness lies within him.

Film works mostly because of its lead actors. The on-screen chemistry between Alia & Varun gets thicker with their confidence and ease in the role-playing process. Varun makes a ‘Bollywood Hero’ impact that can force you to join him on the dance floor with foot tapping music, cheer him up for action sequences and smile even on his silliest joke. Alia, in same manner is cutely comical. She makes screen brightly lit canvas you’re never really fade up to look at. Sidharth Shukla is an extended guest appearance but definitely has something in him.

To sum up, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a mark of respect to DDLJ in a little lighter manner. Where the original is still playing at at least one theater since its first release, this one is meant solely for an enjoyable watch. Don’t expect it to go any further. Watch it if you have nothing else to do this weekend. This will be a 2 hour 15 min short & sweet break from regular boring day. Strictly watchable! [2.5/5]

  11. Just back from Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniya.A watchable film that entertains for the most part though the pacing is bit too slow and the story damn predictable .Also the songs which have always been the biggest highlight of Dharma movies are not that good .'Saturday Saturday ' the only song I liked did not appear till the end.
Acting wise Varun is good though he looks really bad at times .He would have been a complete package if not for his ordinary looks.Alia is easily the best part of the film .I could not take my eyes off her.Her acting is first rate .

Overall watch it if you like romantic movies..

  12. Varun Dhawan is super excellent, but the problem is here with Alia Bhatt,A kaamwaali looks better than Alia Bhatt,Alia Bhatt is very overrated & artificial actress, she has to learn acting seriously ,for her acting looks like joke, she spoils in whatever movie she is, her face is not developed & loos like a new born baby face,if her dad won't be there nobody will keep her even for jhaadu pocha on sets, sorry but she being a public figure & we as an audience we have the right to judge her screen presence & nothing personal ,

  13. not Alia she looks like Kaalia, lol

  14. Watched the movie yesterday.. tough from da promos I didn't have much expectations from this movie but it hurts when u see producers karan johar coming up with a low key product like humpty sharma.. same as yash raj disappointed me wid bewakoofiyan...

The movie is predictable from the beginning. . Tough the screenplay is smooth n varun dhavan gives u some moments to laugh.. aalia bhatt needs to tek up some acting course soon. .4 movia old but U just can not play nri, south indian n punjabi all characters in same flow!! Getting bored of her now. Overall it's just a strictly timepass movie which neither gives u a good after taste nor makes u feel bad.. juat watch on a weekday wen tickets prices go low to pass time. Nothing great about dis movie for audience.. its just made to create some money for producers. I giv it 2/5

  16. ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge’ has been a saga for the Hindi film industry, a film which not only continues to inspire movie makers but perhaps is the only film of the 20th century still running in the theatres.
I definitely had to see ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’, when I came to know that it is somewhat inspired from the classic.

Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt) is soon to be married to an NRI (Siddharth Shukla). She insists her father (Ashutosh Rana) to let her go Delhi for her wedding shopping. There she meets Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan), a carefree chap, who has just completed his graduation.
Humpty comes to know of Kavya’s engagement but still does not refrains himself from a healthy flirting. A series of events let both of them fall for each other.
Humpty approaches Kavya’s father who definitely not approves of their love.
How does The Hero convinces everyone? Is he able to marry Kavya in the end?

    Typical Bollywood masala story, no?
‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ does not has an extraordinary story to offer. What makes it special, is its performances. An almost perfect star cast, I must say.
Debutant director, Shashank Khaitan had such a big responsibility being working under the biggest banner (Dharma Productions) of Hindi cinema. Well, he does not disappoint you! Despite of a week first half, the film makes every attempt to entertain you and returns with a power packed second half.

Make some way for the new rising star, Varun Dhawan. This is his best work till date. Such emotions, such comic timing, such romantic sequences, this star kid is a serious threat to some of established names of the industry. Alia Bhatt gives out a good performance too. Ashutosh Rana is of first grade. Siddhart Shukla, Gaurav Pandey and Saurabh Vaid are decent.

Not as good as DDLJ, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’, still, is a good attempt. A strong second half makes it extremely likable. Not to forget Alia doing a Shahrukh style in those last 5 minutes. Oh you beauty!

    Rating- 3/5

  18. Humpty ki....is typically the copy paste movie from dharma production. Karan johar is unofficially the brand ambassador for indian marriages with all songs.. clothes..jewellery..food.. etc..etc..for the whole world. Infact, I am sure he is going to direct 'hum sath sath hain-part 2' very soon... if there ever would be a guide book named- dummy's guide to what is an Indian marriage- it would surely written by karan johar. Well the characters of varun and aalia and their acting skills are just copy paste from their earlier films.. finally..dharma production is what balaji production is for indian tv..mediocre entertainment.
