I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Sui Dhaaga: Made in India. This could have been a neatly-stitched up narrative with its well-meaning message about the spirit of entrepreneurship, but sadly it unravels in its troubling second half.

2018 is the year of content-driven films… Strong stories that one can relate to are finding an audience… #SuiDhaaga is the newest addition to the list… Yes, it’s not perfect – screenwriting could’ve been better – but it has some incredible moments… Simple is beautiful! Simple. Emotional. Humorous… Aims at your heart… Well-defined characters… Mature direction [Sharat Katariya]… Winsome acts:

On the whole, Sui Dhaaga may have its weaknesses but it will stand strong at the box-office in spite of that. It will prove to be a richly rewarding film because of very good business at the turnstiles, controlled budget and recovery of almost the entire investment from non-theatrical sources. Word of mouth will see collections grow in the weekend.

Sui Dhaaga: Made In India is earnest, simplistic and not entirely convincing. Writer and director Sharat Katariya immerses us into a beautifully detailed world with flesh and blood characters but halfway through, he goes into Bollywood fairy tale mode. Some scenes made me teary and others made me tear my hair out in frustration. So Sui Dhaaga: Made In India is unsatisfying but also poignant. I think the best analogy might be Anu Malik’s song in the film – Chaav Laaga, which isn’t as soul stirring as Moh Moh Ke Dhaage from Dum Laga Ke Haisha – but it’s still worth listening to.

Sui Dhaaga delivers exactly what it promises: a tale stitched together with ‘sui-dhaaga’, dipped in desi ‘silaai’ and ‘kadhaai’.Small-town town couple wins big, pushing aside wily, wicked, unscrupulous townies and greedy rivals: the film’s single-point agenda is drenched in both sweetness and earnestness. The only trouble with the film is its total predictability: you know what’s coming miles before the characters do.

On the whole, SUI DHAAGA – MADE IN INDIA is a simple tale told beautifully with strong emphasis on emotions. At the box office, the film will have to rely on a very good word of mouth to attract audiences. It has an extended five-day weekend of sorts (with October 2 being a National Holiday). Hence, the film would surely have a healthy run at the ticket window and would turn prove profitable or should we say ‘badhiya’ for the producers. Recommended!

Director Sharat Katariya does take a few cinematic liberties, but there are enough real moments to move you. In a winning first half, he successfully establishes his main characters and their problems. Smart usage of humour in dialogues ups the entertainment quotient, even when the going gets tough for the characters.  While the narrative doesn’t get too preachy or predictable, the second half is simply convenient. Also, while Mauji’s struggle for self-employment finds ample mention, there isn’t much to justify his excellence in the craft, except his failed legacy. However, these are minor patches in the overall fabric of the film that is cut for entertainment. Sui Dhaaga is sewn together with strong performances and moments that tell a convincing story.

Sui Dhaaga falls well short of perfection, but it never comes unstuck. It passes muster as a wholesome entertainer embellished with humour, warmth, authentic emotional trappings and actors adept at going seamlessly along with the flow. Definitely worth the price of the ticket, if not more.

While the first half is filled with feel-good moments, the second half gets slightly indulgent as the plot veers towards suspension of disbelief, especially considering the grim economic climate.Sui Dhaaga is a wholesome entertainer which demands that you don’t over-analyse it by pulling at its weak threads. It has its sparkling moments — mainly due to the performances of the actors and the nuggets of humour that are thrown in. So why not pin your hopes on Sui Dhaaga?

Director Sharat Kataria’s last film, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ was appreciated for his knack of capturing the small-town love story between a misfit couple. He brings similar authenticity to ‘Sui Dhaaga’. With his writing, he crafts his characters with care and gives us a story that is heartwarming. The film brings back the combination of Sharat Kataria, Anu Malik and lyricist Varun Grover. Songs like ‘Chaav Laga’, ‘Sui Dhaaga’ to the foot tapping ‘Sab Badhiya Hai’ are high on melody and add to the texture of the film. Despite its minor flaws the movie is an engaging watch.
